ASTANA, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao arrived here Friday evening for a two-day state visit to Kazakhstan.Hu said in a statement released upon arrival at the airport that, with the effort of both sides, his visit would be a total success and help advance the strategic partnership between China and Kazakhstan to a new stage.During the visit, Hu will hold talks with his Kazakh counterpart Nursultan Nazarbayev and meet with parliament and government leaders. The two sides will outline the future development of bilateral links. They will decide on the key tasks and areas of bilateral cooperation in the next stage and exchange views on major international and regional issues of common concern. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R Front) shakes hands with Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov upon his arrival in Astana for a state visit to Kazakhstan, on June 11, 2010.During Hu's visit, the two sides will sign a number of agreements on trade and economic cooperation. In recent years, the China-Kazakhstan strategic partnership has developed rapidly as frequent high-level exchanges helped deepen political mutual trust.Hu said in the statement that China and Kazakhstan shared a long history of friendly relations at both government and grassroots levels. He said, since the two countries established diplomatic links 18 years ago, bilateral relations had maintained a momentum of vigorous growth. Bilateral cooperation in the areas of politics, economy, trade, energy, security and culture had been fruitful.Hu said the two countries stood firm in reciprocal support on major and sensitive issues of each other's concern, adding the two sides had cooperated closely within multilateral frameworks such as the United Nations, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.Hu said the cooperation had brought about substantial benefits to the people of both countries and played a positive role in promoting regional peace, stability and development.Hu was greeted at the airport by Kazakh Prime Minister Karim Masimov and other government officials. Before arriving in Astana, Hu paid a state visit to Uzbekistan and attended an annual SCO summit in Tashkent.Kazakhstan is the final leg of Hu's two-nation Central Asia trip. He returns home Saturday.

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Education said Thursday every primary and middle school student in mudslide-hit Zhouqu County will have new textbooks when the new school semester starts."We have asked publishing houses to rush to print and prepare textbooks for Zhouqu. All of them promised to have them ready by the start of the new semester," ministry spokeswoman Xu Mei said Thursday.Schools in Zhouqu in northwest China's Gansu Province are scheduled to begin the autumn semester on Aug. 16.Some 334,075 volumes of textbooks and support material for Zhouqu's primary and middle school students were kept in a storehouse belonging to the local Xinhua Bookstore that was destroyed by the massive mudslides.Primary and middle schools in Zhouqu need 180,000 textbooks for the new semester, the Ministry of Education said.Xu said the publishing houses will send the textbooks to the provincial Xinhua Bookstore in Gansu before Aug. 14.The ministry also vowed to ensure the supply of textbooks to other areas severely hit by natural disasters, including flood-hit Jilin Province in northeastern China. In addition, Xu Mei said poor students from disaster-hit areas entering college will receive preferential treatment in enrolment and in application for loans. The ministry has asked colleges to investigate the financial situation of freshmen from the disaster-hit areas. The death toll due to the massive mudslides in Zhouqu in the early hours of Sunday had, as of Wednesday, risen to 1,117, with 627 still missing.

BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhua) -- China's consumer price index (CPI), one of the main gauges of inflation, will peak in August before starting to fall in the following months of the year, an economist said Sunday."The CPI is likely to surpass 3.3 percent in August but that will be the highest level for the year," said Lian Ping, chief economist at Shanghai-based Bank of Communications. He said commodity prices will remain relatively low in the short term as market concern about a weak economic recovery linger and as the European debt crisis spreads.Chinese inflation will also ease due to China's slower economic growth rates and a fall in the price of industrial goods, Lian added. However, long-term inflationary pressures cannot be ruled out, due to potential rises in the cost of food, labor and natural resources, he said.Lian said he expects inflationary pressures to grow in March and April next year.Largely on the back of rising food prices after widespread flooding wrecked crops and disrupted shipping, China's July CPI rose 3.3 percent from a year earlier, the fastest rate since October 2008.The CPI for the first seven months of the year stood at 2.7 percent, below the whole-year target of 3 percent.

BEIJING, June 10 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will take an objective, rational and just view towards China's national defense policy and the development of its armed forces, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang here on Thursday.Qin's comment came in response to a question on China's attitude towards a U.S. military officer's remarks on China's military development. The Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen said in a speech to the Asia Society's annual dinner that he was now "genuinely concerned" about "the gap as wide as what seems to be forming between China's stated intent and its military programs."Responding to the remarks, Qin urged the U.S. side to do more to build military relations with China, rather than harming them, so to ensure regional peace, stability and security.Qin said the sole purpose of China's defense policy is self-defense and its military is being developed in a peaceful way.China's development will not pose a threat to any country and anyone, he stressed, adding "We will not threaten and invade others."China opposes hegemonism, he said. China is still a developing country, and even if it becomes a developed country in the future, it will still stick to the road of peaceful development and will not seek hegemony."It is the solemn commitment made by the Chinese government to the outside world," he said.
