SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People living along the coast in north county say they can't remember the last time mosquitoes were so bad.Sharon Mauro lives near the San Elijo Lagoon in Solana Beach."Oh, we couldn't leave the house without them attacking us," said Mauro.She hired Tony Gallardo of Mosquito Joe to spray her property."The last few weeks have been very busy. Basically, from the coastline all the way to Poway, the mosquito problem is pretty significant right now," said Gallardo.Gallardo says he sprays roughly 15 homes a day."This is kind of a perfect storm in everybody is stuck at home now, they want to be outside. The kids are getting tired of being inside. You get outside the mosquitos are eating everybody up, they're breeding cause they have more food, strange way to put it," said Gallardo.San Diego County Vector Control crews sprayed the lagoon last week. They also discovered a new trouble spot."A new spot showed up, and we didn't find until it was a wee bit too late. We do have it treated now, so it's going to be a one-time event," said Chris Conlan, the county's supervising vector ecologist.Conlan said the recent high tides contributed to the increase in mosquitoes."Whenever we get a very high tide event, especially something like a King Tide, as the water recedes from those high tide events sometimes leaves standing pools, and this mosquito is very good at taking advantage of that," said Conlan.Conlan said the Black Salt Marsh Mosquito doesn't transmit disease, but it's an aggressive "day biter," and can travel up to five miles.Residents worried about mosquitos near their property should contact the county's vector control program. 1675

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police Thursday released a picture of the vehicle used in a deadly hit-and-run in Logan Heights last week. 52-year-old Maria Estrada Romero was hit while walking near Cesar Chavez Parkway on her way to a bus stop on November 15. Two days later, she died at the hospital. Police say the driver didn’t call 911, or stop to render aid to Romero. RELATED: Woman critically injured in Logan Heights crashThe vehicle used in the hit-and-run is described as a 1997 to 2004 white Ford F-150 truck with stock wheels. 10News spoke with family members about the crash Wednesday. Romero was a mother of five and grandmother of five. "Always really happy, an outgoing person," said Brianda Ramos.The family says they rushed to the hospital after learning Romero was struck by a hit-and-run driver. Basically left her right there," said Ramos.Family members say Romero had become famous in the area for selling tamales at parks and schools in Southcrest and Bay Terraces. Police say the truck had a tinted back window and a white California sticker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People who live near Mini Square Park in City Heights are fed up with what they say is a rise in crime and noise. They're calling for a curfew to be imposed at the park from 9 pm - 5 am."Every rule that's posted here is broken all day long and mostly all night long," says one woman who asked 10News not to identify her because she feels unsafe in her home next to the park. "I can get practically high from the marijuana that comes into my window cause it overlooks the park. The noise becomes just unbearable at times."The park opened in 2014, on 43rd Street in between Polk and University Avenue. Sitting between a senior center, an apartment complex and a health clinic, It was designed as a way to give adults in the community a gathering place.Instead, neighbors say it's been overrun with crime and drugs.A search of the website crimemapping.com shows 148 crimes reported within 1000 feet of the park over the last six months. That includes 21 stolen cars, 19 assaults and 16 robberies.It's gotten to the point where some people say they're afraid to walk by it, especially at night."Of course I would like to be in this park, to spend my free time there," says Isaac Musaazi, who lives in the apartment complex next door. "But I can't because of the people who are there."A community meeting to discuss a curfew and how to enforce it is scheduled for Thursday with the Community Parks Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Monday afternoon, the San Diego City Council rescinded regulations on short-term rentals in an 8-1 vote. On Aug. 1, the council voted 6-2 in favor of rules to regulate short-term vacation rentals in San Diego. The regulations were set to take effect in July 2019.  These regulations limited the rentals to primary residences, which would force some investors or owners of more than one home to sell their properties or rent them out long-term.City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf was Monday’s lone vote against the repeal.The group Share San Diego called Monday's vote "an important step towards fair and effective short-term rental regulations." 690

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — No charges will be filed in connection to eight officer-involved shootings and four in-custody deaths in San Diego County, District Attorney Summer Stephan announced Friday.Stephan announced the decisions after her office's review of the lethal force incidents involving Kristopher Birtcher, Guillermo Corrales, Javier Gomez, James Lacy, Oscar Leal, Alexander Ochoa, Osbaldo Ramirez, Paul Rivera, Jason Santana, Paul Silva, Jason Trujillo and Robert Westbrook.The cases involve authorities under San Diego County Sheriff's, San Diego Police, and Oceanside Police departments.The D.A. ruled that officers acted reasonably under the circumstances and officers faced no criminal liability for their actions.Watch Stephan's press conference live on Facebook (Warning: Graphic footage): 808
