SAN FRANCISCO, July 28 (Xinhua) -- Global marketing and advertising research company Nielson on Thursday said in its latest survey that Google's Android operating system (OS) continued to dominate the U.S. smartphone market in June.According to Nielson's June survey of mobile consumers, the Android OS claims the largest share of the U.S. consumer smartphone market with 39 percent. Apple's iOS is in second place with 28 percent while RIM Blackberry is down to 20 percent.Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 OS had a 9 percent share of the market while HP webOS (Palm) accounted for 2 percent as did Nokia' s Symbian. In Nielson's May survey, 38 percent of smartphone consumers had a device powered by Android, compared to 27 percent for Apple's iOS for iPhones and 21 percent for RIM Blackberry.Talking about the manufacturer share, Apple is the No.1 in the U.S. as it is the only company manufacturing smartphones with the iOS, said the report.Other leading manufacturers include HTC, whose Android phones represents 14 percent of the smartphone market and whose Windows Mobile/WP7 devices accounted for 6 percent of the market.Motorola's Android devices are owned by 11 percent of smartphone consumers. Samsung's Android devices are used by 8 percent of smartphone consumers and its Windows Phone 7 devices take a 2 percent share, said Nielson.
BEIJING, Sept. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- The amount of space junks floating in Earth's orbit has reached a critical level, warned scientists. The future space missions may become too dangerous to fly for a risk of colliding with space junks, said a report released recently by the U.S. National Research Council (NRC).The kinds of space junks range from huge, the report said, there are thousands of discarded satellites and rocket boosters and countless tiny pieces of daily gabages from space missions. The debris are traveling in orbit at 17,500mph, at such a speed even a tiny clash can destroy a spacecraft. The NRC recommended that NASA should launch a plan to clean up the floating debris and called on other major space nations' cooperation."The current space environment is growing increasingly hazardous to spacecraft and astronauts," said Kessler, an ex-NASA researcher, "NASA needs to determine the best path forward for tackling the multifaceted problems caused by meteoroids and orbital debris that put human and robotic space operations at risk."
CHENGDU, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- A United Nations official said Tuesday that she hopes China will take every opportunity to reinforce, support and lead the UN's agenda and "infuse it with strength and wisdom.""The more China gives, the better the UN can become," said Renata Lok-Dessallien, UN Resident Coordinator and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative in China, at the Seminar in Memory of the 40th Anniversary of the Resumption of Lawful Rights of China in the United Nations. The three-day seminar from Sept. 19 to 21 is being held in the city of Chengdu in southwest China's Sichuan Province. About 100 UN and Chinese officials are gathering to discuss China's role in the UN, as well as the UN's role in global diplomacy.Lok-Dessallien said that the General Assembly Resolution of Oct. 25, 1971 was an "important milestone in China's international relations and in the history of the United Nations.""It restored the rights of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations and marked China's entry to the world stage," she said.Steven Sabey, a senior policy advisor from the UNDP's China office, said that China plays an important role in facilitating cooperation about the member states of the United Nations."China needs the United Nations, and the United Nations also needs China," said Wu Hailong, China's assistant minister of foreign affairs."We must recognize that as the largest developing country in the world, China needs to manage its domestic affairs first, as this can have a positive effect on humanity as a whole," Wu said.As China's role in the world continues to grow and evolve, the UN's role in China will also grow, according to Lok-Dessallien."As China's development trajectory continues to evolve, we are entering significantly new territory in the UN-China relationship," she said.Sabey said that he hopes China will strengthen its cooperation with the United Nations in order to further improve intercultural communication and allow China to contribute more to other developing countries."The United Nations is committed to continuing to deepen and strengthen our partnership as we tackle the many global challenges ahead," said Lok-Dessallien.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday announced a recall on a drug infusion pump of Medtronic, the Associated Press reported. The recalled drug pump was called "SynchroMed II", including models of 8637-20 and 8637-40, distributed between 2004 and July 2011.Drug infusion pump was used to deliver the drugs for patients to treat chronic pain, spasms as well as other conditions. The pumps' malfunction could put patients in the risk of either recurrent or withdrawal symptoms, which could be life-threatening, FDA warned. There were 55 reported cases and one death related to the drug withdrawal, among a total 139,653 SynchroMed II pump implants worldwide, FDA notified. The problem was due to a film within the pump's battery that could stop the therapy, FDA said.Medtronic, the U.S. medical technology company based in Minneapolis, is not recommending patients to remove the pumps, but instead, encourage patients to contact their doctor if they hear the device alarm.
