LOS ANGELES (AP) — National Guard troops will be pulled out of California cities, including San Diego, where they’ve been deployed for a week after rampant violence and theft marred the first days of protests over the death of George Floyd. The announcement comes as peaceful demonstrations again emerged across the state. In San Diego County, about 100 National Guard troops had been stationed in La Mesa while another 100 were in an undisclosed area ready to move anywhere in the county. San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore requested the troops to assist with security following looting and rioting in La Mesa last weekend.RELATED: California Army National Guard now in San Diego County after sheriff's request"Tonight, [California Army Guard] troops have left [San Diego County]. We want to thank them for supporting [San Diego Sheriff Department] and our partner law enforcement agencies to ensure the protection of life and property while balancing people’s right to assemble peacefully," Gore tweeted.A timeline for the Guard pullout was not provided, but Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said some troops would begin departing Sunday evening. Meanwhile the Compton Cowboys, a group of mostly African American horse enthusiasts, wore boots and ten-gallon hats during a “ride for peace” through urban neighborhoods south of Los Angeles. 1339

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California is sending every registered voter a mail-in ballot for the November election, but the state will also establish hundreds of locations for people who want — or need — to vote in-person. The decision to send every voter a mail-in ballot was prompted last month by health concerns tied to the coronavirus. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom says the state will also have a range of options for in-person voting. Counties must open a minimum of one in-person voting location for every 10,000 voters beginning the Saturday before Election Day. In-person voting locations must also allow voters to maintain physical distancing. RELATED:California to send all voters mail-in ballots this NovemberRNC sues Gov. Newsom over order to send mail ballots to all California votersThe executive order will also require ballot drop-box locations be available between Oct. 6 and Nov. 3. In-person voting sites will be available in county elections offices starting 29 days before Election Day.Republicans have been critical of the state's plans for November. 1073

LONDON — America’s top infectious disease has apologized for suggesting authorities in the United Kingdom rushed their authorization of a COVID-19 vaccine, saying he has “great faith” in the country’s regulators.Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, had sparked controversy with an earlier interview in which he said U.K. regulators hadn’t acted “as carefully” as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Fauci said late Thursday that he meant to say U.S. authorities do things differently than their British counterparts, not better, but his comments weren’t phrased properly.Fauci told the BBC: “I do have great faith in both the scientific community and the regulatory community at the U.K., and anyone who knows me and my relationship with that over literally decades, you know that’s the case.”After Fauci’s original comments, U.K. regulators went on the offensive. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency said Friday that its personnel rigorously analyzed data on safety and effectiveness in the shortest time possible without compromising the thoroughness of their review. The agency's comments came as the Times newspaper reported that the agency’s chief executive would give a series of radio interviews so she can speak directly to people who may be concerned about being vaccinated. The media blitz comes after amid concerns that criticism of the approval process could undermine public confidence in the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, leading some individuals to shun shots. 1551

LOS ANGELES (CNS) - USC researchers have found the likely order in which COVID-19 symptoms first appear: fever, then cough and muscle pain, followed by nausea, and/or vomiting, and diarrhea, it was announced Thursday.Knowing the order of COVID-19's symptoms may help patients seek care promptly or decide sooner than later to self isolate, according to scientists at the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience. The information also may help doctors rule out other illnesses, or help doctors plan how to treat patients, and perhaps intervene earlier in the disease. The study, which appears in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, was led by doctoral candidate Joseph Larsen and scientists Peter Kuhn and James Hicks at the USC Michelson Center's Convergent Science Institute in Cancer."This order is especially important to know when we have overlapping cycles of illnesses like the flu that coincide with infections of COVID-19," said Kuhn, a USC professor of medicine, biomedical engineering, and aerospace and mechanical engineering. "Doctors can determine what steps to take to care for the patient, and they may prevent the patient's condition from worsening."Fever and cough are frequently associated with a variety of respiratory illnesses, including influenza, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. But the timing and symptoms in the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract set COVID-19 apart."Given that there are now better approaches to treatments for COVID- 19, identifying patients earlier could reduce hospitalization time," Larsen said.To determine COVID symptom chronology, the authors analyzed more than 55,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in China collected from Feb. 16 to Feb. 24 by the World Health Organization. They also studied a dataset of nearly 1,100 cases collected from Dec. 11 through Jan. 29 by the China Medical Treatment Expert Group via the National Health Commission of China. In addition, to compare the order of COVID-19 symptoms to influenza, the researchers examined data from 2,470 cases in North America, Europe and the Southern Hemisphere, which were reported to health authorities from 1994 to 1998."The order of the symptoms matter, " Larsen said. "Knowing that each illness progresses differently means that doctors can identify sooner whether someone likely has COVID-19, or another illness, which can help them make better treatment decisions." 2440
