JAKARTA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China and Indonesia on Tuesday pledged to step up legislative cooperation on top Chinese legislator's visit to the biggest Southeast Asian country."Thank to their crucial role in their own country's political life, the National People's Congress (NPC) of China and Regional Representative Council (RRC) of Indonesia should carry out friendly exchanges at all levels and increase experience sharing on ethnic and religious policy and seeking region's balanced development," Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee Wu Bangguo said in a meeting with RRC Speaker Irman Gusman Tuesday.Irman underscored RRC's commitment to developing sound ties with China, saying it would seek closer bonds with the NPC, promote experience sharing on economy, politics and people-to- people exchanges, draw on China's experience on balanced development.On broader China-Indonesia ties, Wu reviewed the smooth growth of bilateral ties, particularly since the two countries upgraded their relations to strategic partnership in 2005.Wu Bangguo (L), chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, the country's top legislature, meets with Irman Gusman, chairman of the House of Regional Representatives of Indonesia in Jakarta, Indonesia, Nov. 9, 2010.This is Wu's first visit to Indonesia, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of China-Indonesia diplomatic ties.As developing countries, China and Indonesia share common tasks of growing economy and improving livelihood, Wu said.Wu said China would like to work with Indonesia to deepen strategic cooperation, address challenges and usher in an new era of bilateral ties.Characterizing bilateral relations as "comprehensive and strategic partnership," Irman said Wu's visit to Indonesia was historic and would promote all-round substantive cooperation.During Wu's stay in Jakarta, China announced 10-million-yuan humanitarian aid in cash to Indonesia as earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruptions wrecked serious havoc on the country.Later Tuesday, a grand reception was held in honor of top Chinese legislator. Around 1,000 Indonesia officials, business entrepreneurs and others attended the reception.In his brief address at the reception, Wu called on Indonesian people of all circles to contribute their wisdom and commitment to China-Indonesia friendly ties.Indonesia was the second leg of Wu's three-nation tour to Southeast Asia, which also included Cambodia and Thailand.Wu will leave Jakarta for Bangkok on Wednesday.

UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- China's UN Ambassador Li Baodong on Tuesday expressed hope for a "peaceful, free, transparent and fair" referendum to be held in south Sudan early next year."The south Sudan referendum is a key step in the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), but it is not an end in itself," Li told a high-level meeting of the UN Security Council here."We hope that the referendum will be held in a peaceful, free, transparent and fair manner in accordance with the CPA and reflect the will of the Sudanese people, and that the outcome of the referendum will be respected by all parties."The ambassador urged the northern and southern Sudan to "try their utmost to expedite the preparations for the referendum," and called on the international community to create favorable conditions for the referendum, "but not to prejudge its outcome.""Neither party must take unilateral actions," he stressed. " Whatever the outcome of the referendum, it is necessary to ensure the overall peace and stability of Sudan and the whole region."The Chinese envoy also expressed concern about "the serious lacking behind of the political process" in Darfur, which poses the "most prominent challenge" for the settlement of the question of Darfur.He urged those Darfur parties that have yet to join the political process to do so immediately and without conditions.Li announced that the Chinese government has decided to make an additional donation of 500,000 U.S. dollars to the UN Trust Fund for the political process in Darfur.

YINCHUAN, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Millions of Chinese Muslims across the country celebrated the tradition of Corban on Tuesday and Wednesday.In northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, 76-year-old Liu Wenming attended a religious ceremony at the Nanguan Mosque in the regional capital, Yinchuan, Wednesday morning, along with some 10,000 Muslims."My son, daughter and grandchildren will come from different parts of Ningxia to have a family lunch with me. Then we will visit other relatives and friends," said Liu.In Qinghai Province, also in the northwest, many Muslims began to gather at the Dongguan Mosque in the provincial capital Xining before 8 a.m. Tuesday. By 9 a.m., roads outside the mosque were packed with pious Muslims. Muslims attend a celebration feast held in a street in Nanning, capital of southwest China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, to mark Corban Festival, also known as Eid al-adha, Nov. 17, 2010. Chinese muslims celebrate Eid al-Adha, which falls on the tenth day of the twelfth month on the Islamic calendar, to mark the end of the haj and commemorate Prophet Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on God's command.Ten ethnic groups in China, including Hui, Uygur, Dongxiang and Bao'an, celebrate the annual festival -- but they celebrate it on different days. Some celebrated it on Tuesday while others celebrated it Wednesday. The timing depends on each ethic group's tradition.The Corban Festival, also known as Id al-Gurban, is a major Islamic festival that is meant to demonstrate believers' faith and obedience to Allah. People slaughter livestock and divide the animal into three parts.One part is to be eaten by the family. Another part is for relatives and friends. The third part is for charity.Migrant workers from northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region returned home this month in time for the festival.Eighty-seven migrant workers from Shule County returned home in early November to join their families in celebrating the joyous occasion.Additionally, the regional government organized a reception on Tuesday afternoon, during which Zhang Chunxian, secretary of the regional committee of the Communist Party of China, met representatives from all walks of life.At the end of his speech, Zhang greeted the Muslims while speaking in the Uygur language, which received warm applause.China has more than 20 million Muslims. They mainly live in Xinjiang, Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, Yunnan, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia and Henan.

  

JINAN, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and the Republic of Korea (ROK)Tuesday launched a joint land and sea transport services in a bid to cut logistics costs and boost trade.Semi-trailers loaded with cargo can now be shipped between Qingdao, Rizhao, Yantai, Weihai, Longyan and Shidao in the eastern Chinese province of Shandong and Incheon, Pyungtack and Kunsan in the ROK.The service can cut transport time by 3.5 hours and reduce costs by 50 U.S. dollars per container, as trailers can be driven directly to customers without unloading and loading, according to the ROK's Transport Research Institute.The service is expected to boost the shipments of fresh vegetables, live fish and other fragile products such as glass and electronics.Gao Hongtao, deputy director of the Shandong Provincial Transportation Bureau, said that with continuous oxygen charging and temperature control, the service can increase by 10 percent the survival rate of live fish exported from Weihai to the ROK.The two countries would later allow trucks to be shipped, according to an agreement they signed in September. The ports might also later include locations such as northeast China's Liaoning Province, according to Ju Chengzhi, director of the international cooperation department with China's Ministry of Transport.This year marks the 20th year since the launching of cargo, passenger and container sea transport services between China and the ROK. China has become the ROK's largest trading partner, both as its largest importer and exporter.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- China Thursday expressed the hope that the pricing difference on natural gas imported from Russia would be narrowed through joint efforts from both sides.Gu Jun, deputy director-general of the National Energy Administration's international department, made the remarks at a news briefing on Premier Wen Jiabao's upcoming visit to Russia and Tajikistan.Though companies from both sides had made many efforts in this regard, a certain difference still existed in the pricing of natural gas imported from Russia, Gu said, calling for additional sincerity to be demonstrated on the pricing talks by the two sides.Talks on this issue will be also a part of Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan's upcoming visit to Russia, she said.In 2009, Russia inked a framework agreement with China on annually supplying at most 70 billion cubic meters of natural gas to China, but they still did not reach an agreement on the supplying price.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will pay official visits to Russia and Tajikistan from Nov. 22 to 25 at the invitation of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Tajikistan Prime Minister Akil Akilov.During the visits, Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the 15th Chinese-Russian prime ministers meeting and the ninth prime ministers meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
