SAN DIEGO, California — With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids' candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy."There's going to be candy all over the house," says Dr. James Elia from Sharp Grossmont Hospital. "If there are edibles that are in the household and are forgotten to put away, kids may be able to get into them as well."State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can't contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can't have more than 10.Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy."You cannot use the word candy and animals cannot be in the shape of certain animals and images that might be attractive to children," says Kyle Dukes from Torrey Holistics. He also noted that state law doesn't allow the edibles to be in any shape the State Bureau of Cannabis Control deems "attractive to children." Specifically, they can't be shaped like fruit, animals or lollipops.Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled.Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don't want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating."They could experience alteration of mental status, sometimes hallucinations, severe anxiety, severe paranoia," he says. "With children, it's also noted shortness of breath."Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids' trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn't wind up in their collection."We all have to be concerned about this," he says. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Assembly Bill 5 (AB 5) may pose a new threat in plans for at-home learning this fall.AB 5 was created to help turn some gig workers, or freelancers turn into employees with benefits.The bill has been met with controversy as it has impacted thousands of freelance workers across California, and now it could change how tutors can be hired.“Many parents are scrambling right now to find out how do they help their children keep pace,” said Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California.DeMaio held a press conference in Escondido with a group of parents, teachers, and education advocates by his side, calling for California Gov. Gavin Newsom to suspend AB 5.“This is absurd that the governor is allowing an environment where parents have to run the risk for violating AB 5, a state law, facing penalties and fines for doing so, just because they’re trying to help their children learn,” he said.DeMaio said parents who want a tutor for their child during this challenging time might be required to hire them as employees, not independent contractors.He has created an online petition and urges people to sign it before it’s sent to the governor.Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez authored AB 5 and sent the following statement to ABC 10News in response to DeMaio’s press conference. 1299

San Diego (KGTV)- For weeks, the pandemic left nursing students at CSU San Marcos in limbo when it came to completing their graduation requirements. Now, thanks to the county, the students can get their clinical hours.When the pandemic hit in March, nursing students were forced out of public health facilities to get their hands-on experience for their classes.“We didn’t know when we were going to go back, and it was halfway through the spring semester,” says nursing student Winter Minton.Minton will be graduating from CSU San Marcos in the spring.The nursing student says for weeks, students were unsure about how they would obtain their clinical hours. A total of 135 hours are needed for two classes.“When we were ready to go back, the county was not willing, ready to have nursing students on site at all,” says Course Coordinator Madelyn Lewis.In August, the county opened a COVID-19 testing clinic on campus and allowed nursing students to work on-site. The students assist patients with self-administered COVID tests while wearing full protective gear.“Not only does it benefit us, but it benefits so many people,” says Minton. “I heard people driving all the way down from Irvine or Fullerton just to get the exam done.”Minton says the walk-in clinic sees more than 300 patients a day.The testing site is open to the public seven days a week. 1363
