CLEVELAND — A 75-year-old USA Triathlon participant pulled from the water by a U.S. Coast Guard boat patrolling Lake Erie on Saturday morning has died, authorities have confirmed.The unresponsive man was spotted in the water by the Coast Guard near the Edgewater Marina in Cleveland around 8 a.m. Crews retrieved the man and performed CPR on him. The victim was then transported to a nearby hospital but later died, authorities said.The man was identified as Jim Hix, of Claremore, Oklahoma. Hix died while competing in the swimming portion of the Olympic-distance race, officials said.“Our sport lost a member of its beloved community and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Jim’s wife, Ann, his family and friends,” said USA Triathlon CEO Rocky Harris. “As one of the nation’s top multisport athletes in his age group, Jim and USA Triathlon shared a close relationship and his passing is particularly difficult.”According to USA Triathlon officials, Hix was the 2017 USA Triathlon Duathlon National Champion in his age group.  1084

(KGTV) -- Dozens of sailors are set to return to North Island Sunday morning following a months-long deployment.Six helicopters and 40 to 50 pilots, aircrew and maintainers from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 6 will arrive at the Naval Air Station North Island after a six-month deployment.The squadron is part of the San Diego-based Third Fleet and supports aircraft carrier operations with the Fifth Fleet in the Persian Gulf and Seventh Fleet in Japan.Also returning this week in the USS Theodore Roosevelt which will arrive Monday.The aircraft carrier departed in October and made port calls in the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Singapore and the Philippines.   696

When she dies, her ring is placed in a velvet-lined memorial box alongside dozens of others to commemorate her dedication to the church.During the monastery's entire 159 years of existence, Sister Aileen Bankemper said, no one has ever dared to steal one. On Monday, someone stole more than 100. "There was a sense of just emptiness," Bankemper, the prioress, said of discovering the burglary. "There was just like, 'Why would somebody do that?' We're a generous community. It somebody had a need for money, they could have come to us, and we certainly would have listened to what their need was."The rings disappeared while the sisters were attending a memorial service for 88-year-old Sister Cecilia Dagle, who was known during her time at the monastery for her kind spirit and habit of writing birthday cards for each of her fellow sisters. When they returned, someone had stolen "a significant amount of money" and more than a century of history.Sister Nancy Kordenbrock said police believe the person who stole the rings, which were 14 karat gold, would have done so intending to pawn them for cash.
