SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Julian man was behind bars Tuesday on suspicion of fleeing after the car he was driving struck and fatally injured a bicyclist on a rural road east of El Cajon.Craig Wendell Nelson, 56, was heading east on Dehesa Road near Singing Hills Golf Course when his 1993 Mitsubishi Mirage veered into a bike lane east of Willow Glen Drive and hit Kevin Wilson of La Mesa from behind about 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to the California Highway Patrol.Medics took Wilson, also 56, to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego, where was pronounced dead.Following the crash, Nelson allegedly kept driving to the east and south before pulling over on Sloane Canyon Road and fleeing on foot, CHP public- affairs Officer Travis Garrow said.Officers eventually found the abandoned vehicle, and a helicopter search crew spotted Nelson in a nearby brushy area. He was arrested and booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and- run.Nelson was being held on ,000 bail pending arraignment, tentatively scheduled for Thursday afternoon. 1083

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Barrels holding an unknown substance were found on a Rancho Pe?asquitos sidewalk today, and San Diego Fire-Rescue investigators were looking into it.The unidentified drums were found unattended around 9:30 a.m. on Kika Court near Mercy Road.Hazmat crews took samples from the drums but were unable to determine what substance was inside, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Jose Ysea said.Investigators left the scene, and a contractor was called in to remove and dispose of the material. 510

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An ex-con dubbed the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the disguise he wore while robbing four banks in San Diego is scheduled to be sentenced today at the downtown courthouse.James Saputo, 51, pleaded guilty in June to robbery, attempted robbery and other charges. He faces more than 130 years to life in prison.Saputo was arrested twice in 2016 on drug charges and was out of custody on bail when he committed the bank robberies in San Diego between Feb. 12 and March 30 last year, said Deputy District Attorney Lucy Yturralde.The defendant is also accused of robbing seven banks in Riverside and Orange counties, the prosecutor said.Authorities nicknamed Saputo the "Bad Grandpa" bandit because of the elderly disguise he wore, which included a wig, glasses and a cane.Saputo's criminal record dates back to 1986. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of fatally beating a fellow transient with a mini sledgehammer as the two argued along a Midway District street was ordered Monday to stand trial on a murder charge.Greg Repp Jennings, 53, is accused in the Jan. 8, 2018, slaying of 37- year-old Michael Anthony Dean, who was struck several times in the head with a four-pound hammer.First responders found Dean lying face-up in the street with his face "caved in," according to preliminary hearing testimony. He was pronounced dead at the scene, near 3805 Midway Drive.According to testimony from SDPD Detective Sgt. Christopher Leahy, one witness told investigators that an argument sparked the killing, which began when Jennings was talking loudly at a bus stop. Dean, who was also sitting at the bus stop, asked Jennings to "tone it down," angering the defendant, who told him "it was his First Amendment right and he wasn't going to shut up," Leahy said.Other witnesses also saw the men arguing and then saw Dean fall into the street, at which point Jennings allegedly struck him with the hammer multiple times.Jennings told investigators that he acted in self-defense, according to testimony. He alleged Dean had tied a pair of workboots together by the laces and was going to use the improvised weapon to attack him.Jennings remained at the scene and was arrested by responding officers.The defendant remains in custody without bail. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Hot temperatures are expected Tuesday throughout San Diego County amid a heat wave that will last through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.High pressure will continue to strengthen through Thursday, causing the mercury to rise in most parts of the county, forecasters said.
