BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- The upcoming leaders' meeting of China, Japan and the Republic of Korea (ROK) will map out cooperation in East Asia in the years to come, said Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun on Wednesday.Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao will attend the third three-party leaders' meeting of China, the ROK and Japan to be held in Jeju of the ROK from May 29-30."The meeting will look to outline future cooperation, promote political trust, and consolidate cooperation," Zhang said.The Asian economies have recovered from the global financial crisis this year, and this provides a good opportunity for cooperation between China, Japan and the ROK, he said.Zhang said China expects the meeting to map out key areas of cooperation so to support the economic recovery and the construction of East Asian Community, and also to reinforce coordination in regional and international affairs.
BEIJING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- In light of the recent school attacks, China has tightened security for the college entrance examination which begins on Monday."All the relevant departments and local governments are fully prepared to respond to emergencies during the exam," said Liu Junyi, vice-director of the exam center under the Ministry of Education, on Sunday.In Beijing, police, security guards and volunteers will work together to guard the exam venues.In Henan and Anhui provinces, emergency-responses have been prepared in case of disorder due to bad weather, serious cheating behavior, food poisoning, or traffic accidents.China's national college entrance examination will be held on Monday, with more than 9.57 million examinees competing for 6.57 million places at nationwide universities and colleges.Because of the recent slew of attacks against students, boarding school teachers in south China' s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are required to walk students from their schools to the exam venues."The college entrance exam is a matter of great importance that demands joint efforts of relevant departments," Liu said.In Chongqing municipality, public security departments have inspected students' living areas around exam venues to ensure their safety.In Hubei province, relevant departments have completed a rehearsal using exam paper B in case that students are found cheating using exam paper A.In Jilin, an anti-cheating campaign has seized over 4,000 cheating device sets."We have organized a dozen expert teams, who are ready to handle nationwide emergencies and incidents," Liu said.In quake-hit Yushu of Qinghai Province, experts from the Ministry of Education have arrived to help hold the exam.A total of 9.57 million people have registered to sit for the exam this year. More than 68 percent of them will go into college. There are a total of 320,000 exam venues around the country.

KHARTOUM, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese official said Saturday that the China-Arab Cooperation Forum constitutes an important platform to upgrade the economic, commercial and social ties between China and the Arab world."The China-Arab Cooperation Forum is important as it constitutes one of the major mechanisms to enhance and strengthen the economic and commercial relations between the Arab states and China," Abdul-Baqui Jailani, Sudanese state minister for humanitarian affairs, told Xinhua, one week before a ministerial conference of the China-Arab Cooperation Forum scheduled for May 13, in Tianjin, China.Jailani regarded the Sino-Sudanese cooperation as a model for the Arab countries to follow suit, saying that "Chinese experience in Sudan deserves to be studied thoroughly and it deserves to be repeated elsewhere in any other African or Arab country"."I think if we take for example oil industry, exploration and production services, the Chinese have proved to be at the highest level of development in this industry in particular, and I think we can develop this in other similar countries where there are reserves of petroleum," he added.He went on to say that "China is working with full transparency; they can build confidence with others without any hindrances or obstacles."The Sudanese official further called upon the Arab and African countries as well to give the Chinese a chance to invest and cooperate, adding that "such cooperation will result in mutual benefit for both China and others nations."He affirmed that China's contribution to establishment of development projects in Sudan would help in achieving lasting stability and peace in the country, saying that "for example, if we concentrate on development, on infrastructure, we will come to peace in Darfur. BEIJING, April 16 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature will convene its bimonthly session from April 26-29 and review draft amendments to the State Secrets Law and the State Compensation Law.The decision was made Friday at a meeting of the Council of Chairmen of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, presided over by top legislator Wu Bangguo.The draft amendment to the State Secrets Law, which will undergo its third reading during the upcoming legislative meeting, aims to boost citizens' awareness of the importance of safeguarding state secrets.The draft amendment to the State Compensation Law, which will be submitted for its fourth reading, aims to better defend people's rights from being violated by the state. It is also hoped to cover the protection of detainees' rights following a series of deaths in the country's detention houses.The session will also deliberate, for the second time, on a draft law on protection of oil and natural gas pipelines, according to a statement issued by the council.The statement said a treaty on explosives left over from war and a Sino-Indonesian extradition treaty, both submitted by the State Council, or Cabinet, are expected to be ratified at the session.Lawmakers will also discuss Cabinet reports on protection of migrant workers' rights, the development of the cultural industry, strengthening road safety management, the implementation of a law protecting Taiwan compatriots' investment, as well as a motion regarding appointments and dismissals.At Friday's meeting, members of the Council of Chairmen expressed their condolences to victims of a deadly earthquake that hit Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Qinghai Province early Wednesday.They also paid tribute to rescuers from the People's Liberation Army, armed police, among others at the forefront of quake relief.
BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China's outstanding external debt reached 428.6 billion U.S.dollars by the end of 2009, up 14.4 percent from a year earlier, the State Administration of Foreign Exchange (SAFE) said here in a statement on its website Tuesday.The figure excluded Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR), Macao SAR, and Taiwan.The country's registered foreign debt was equivalent to 266.95 billion U.S. dollars by the end of last year, up 2.5 percent from the 2008 level. Outstanding trade credits stood at 161.7 billion U.S.dollars, according to SAFE.China's foreign debt service ratio was 2.87 percent, while the foreign debt ratio and liability ratio stood at 32.15 percent and 8.73 percent, respectively, SAFE said.Mid- and long-term external debt, accounting for 39.52 percent of all outstanding foreign debt, totaled 169.39 billion U.S.dollars by 2009, most of which came from manufacturing and infrastructure construction in transportation, storage and postal services, it said.Short-term external debt rose 23 percent to 259.26 billion U.S.dollars year on year by the end of 2009, accounting for 60.48 percent of the total.New mid- and long-term debt in 2009 declined 38.18 percent to 22.45 billion U.S.dollars from a year earlier.China repaid principals for mid- and long-term loans of 34.19 billion U.S. dollars and 3.63 billion U.S. dollars in interest in 2009, up 46.78 percent and down 12.64 percent year on year, respectively, said SAFE.
