San Diego (KGTV)- After a second vote, a marijuana production facility is given the green light to move forward. Dozens of people, on both sides of the issue, were there as city leaders made their decision. Planning commissioners voted 4 to 2, giving business leaders the conditional use permit they needed to move ahead with plans. “We’re elated that the decision was in our favor,” says Jared Angell, CFO of THinC. “We followed all the rules and regulations and were glad to see that the planning commission could uphold that.”Business leaders were hoping for this decision after a deadlock vote of 3 to 3 last week. The over 21,000 square feet building on Ruffner Road will be used for the marijuana production site. During today’s vote, some planning commissioners asked that the building, moving forward, be more transparent by adding more windows. Commissioners also requested storage items be housed on the top level. Community members were concerned about the safety and future of their neighborhood, but business leaders say ThinC is committed to working with everyone.“We reached out to a lot of local business and community members, and we’ve been working with them to ensure that our business will not negatively affect them in any way,” says Angell. “It sends a strong message about the strength of community,” says community member Ping Wang. “I would be overjoyed for our community coming together, banning together, and supporting each other.”The site will be used for manufacturing and distributing marijuana products. As they are still in the planning stages, there is no word yet on when the facility will be in business. 1649

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With the drop of a banner, the Rock Church replaced the old sign of the Body Shop Strip Club purchased by the church. The church says they’re unsure what they’ll do with the building, but Thursday, they made it clear it’s no longer a strip club.It was quite the presentation, dozens of people, a stage and a sound system. The announcement the church made yesterday officially unveiled Thursday.RELATED: Rock Church buys former strip club in Midway DistrictWith Pastor Miles McPherson leading the charge, a Rock Church banner draped over the sign of the former strip club. “I’m very excited for what this won’t be, and how we can help the girls moving forward,” McPherson said. The church and several investors brought the club and its license for .2 million.Councilmember Lorie Zapf said the move is the beginning of a new future for the Midway with a vision of parks, families and a new welcoming look. “Midway is no longer going to be the red light district of yesteryear.”The problem with the plan, however, is the building sits just feet away from another strip club. “They started harassing me in April, I was called about 15 times by their broker,” said Kathleen Morgan, who owns Les Girls Theater.“It’s easy to stigmatize this type of business. But we don’t even have male bouncers, we don’t even serve alcohol, we’re old school burlesque,” Morgan said.On stage Thursday, was a pledge to take over Morgan’s place. “I’m hoping that they can acquire the property next door. Once the Midway plan is approved, they’ll be able to plan for the future of what’s allowed here by the zoning,” Zapf said.Morgan says investors are trying to driver her out. The church says they aren’t involved in that. “That’s something that will have to take its own course, we’re not necessarily pushing that,” said McPherson.Morgan also says the business has been vandalized recently, adding if she sells, it won’t be to the church. “In 50 years we’ve never had this type of vandalism, we’ve never had these types of issues. I will never sell the property to the Rock Church.” 2093

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - What looks like a fire zone on a busy Ocean Beach street is a fraud, the City of San Diego confirmed to 10News Wednesday. The red curb at Abbott Street and Santa Monica Avenue got the attention of neighbors. Diana Webster has lived in the community for 66 years and said people have been getting active with spray paint. “On Friday, five scooters were parked in there and on Saturday, somebody had painted black where all the scooters should be parked. Sounds like there is some suspicious activity with spray cans, I guess so,” Webster said. “I think it’s pretty crazy someone got away with it,” said a neighbor identified as Rodrigo. The city said illegal red curbing happens regularly in parking-dense areas and the best way to take care of it is to report it through their Get It Done app. If the paint looks different than a typical red curb, it’s likely illegal, the city said. 910

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested Monday afternoon after police say she stole a vehicle with two children inside.Police say Rodney Cole left his 3-year-old son and 8-year-old daughter in his car with the engine and air conditioner running around noon on the 200 block of Euclid Avenue. After he went into a business, a witness reported seeing a woman, later identified as Leslie Saenz, get into the car and drive away with the children inside.Monday night Cole explained the terrifying ordeal to 10News.His 8-year-old daughter, Malaiha, told police she was able to call the police and tell dispatchers that she and her brother Jackson had been kidnapped. "They said, '911 whats your emergency?' and I said, 'me and my little brother got kidnapped,'" Malaiha said. "and (police) said, 'where are you and what can you see?' and I said, 'signs for the Mexico border.'""(The woman) tried to take the phone away from me but I moved away from her, and she said, 'give it to me, or I’m going to drive in circles and take this car and crash into the freeway wall.'"That's when she gave the phone to the woman, but the police acted quickly.  Roughly 30 minutes later after the car was stolen, Border Patrol detained the woman as she was trying to cross the border into Mexico.  Police have since taken Saenz into custody.Cole told 10News he bought the phone for the kids a few months ago, but it's not an activated line. He taught Malaiha how to call 911 on the phone, in case of emergencies. "I'm very proud of her," he said. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two more migrants were diagnosed with the flu in the county shelter downtown and one was sent to the hospital, according to Jose Alvarez Communications Specialist with the County of San Diego Communications Office. The flights have been landing at Lindbergh Field since May 14th, easing overcrowding in Texas detention centers.Border Patrol officials stated migrants are given a health screening in Texas before they travel to San Diego, and are screened again once they land.County Health officials stated a total of 31 migrants have been diagnosed with the flu since May 19, officials say. Twenty-seven migrants, 13 families, are currently quarantined.RELATED: County responds to flu outbreak at shelter, linked to Texas migrants flown to San Diego"This is a new situation to us and I'm told it could get much worse," County Supervisor Dianne Jacob said.Once off the plane, the migrants who crossed illegally in Texas and flown to San Diego are taken to a Border Patrol Facility to be processed by ICE.Eventually, they end up at the shelter. There they get another health screening and starting Thursday, everyone gets a mask and Tamiflu pill as a precaution to keep the sickness from spreading. The pill and a flu shot is offered to staff and volunteers at the shelter. As of Friday, extra nurses are coming into the shelter to check on the group and ensure no one else has come down with the flu. Those who are diagnosed go with their families to a hotel that has individual air units, so they don't spread the virus. They are educated on why they should stay in the room and, if they leave, what precautions to take so they don't infect others.Migrants in the shelter can come and go as they wish.Border Patrol stated migrants who exhibit flu-like symptoms are not allowed to fly and instead are given medical treatment in Texas. Border Patrol also said agents closely monitor detainees throughout the trip. The state dedicates ,000,000 to migrant shelters, according to County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher's Office. 2045
