SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday.The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit.She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A veteran San Diego fire captain pleaded guilty Wednesday to a felony domestic violence charge for injuring his girlfriend during an argument.Steven Michaels, 54, faces up to a year in jail when he is sentenced Feb. 7.As part of his plea agreement, Michaels -- a 30-year firefighter with San Diego Fire-Rescue -- will be on probation for three years, said Deputy District Attorney Stephen Marquardt.Judge Timothy Walsh also ordered the defendant to have no contact with the victim, Marquardt said.RELATED: Trial begins for man accused of stabbing two San Diego firefightersAt his arraignment in August, a prosecutor said Stevens shoved his girlfriend against a wall on July 21 and refused to let her use a cell phone to call for help after she was injured.Michaels has been arrested twice in the past for alleged domestic violence -- once in 2006 and again in December 2015.His run-ins with law enforcement were brought up during the trial of a man who stabbed two San Diego firefighters at an East Village trolley stop in June 2015.Defense attorney Gretchen von Helms didn't immediately comment on how Stevens' felony guilty plea will affect his job status. 1189
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A murder charge was filed Wednesday against a man accused of striking a man in the head with a wrench outside a 7-Eleven store in the Rolando neighborhood, resulting in his death five days later.John Cowan Patch, 26, is accused in the Nov. 5 attack on George Almestar, 30, who was found around 4:20 a.m. in the parking lot of the convenience store near the intersection of El Cajon and Rolando boulevards.Paramedics performed CPR on the victim, who was bleeding from his head, and took him to a hospital, where he was admitted in critical condition, Officer Scott Lockwood said.RELATED: Suspect pleads not guilty to 7-Eleven attack that left man on life supportAlmestar died at the hospital on Nov. 10, according to a GoFundMe page created by the victim's family.A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.Patch was arrested the same day and was arraigned Nov. 8 on attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 21-year-old man who was killed when the sports car he was driving crashed off a South Bay freeway connector.Jose Cruz Perez of Logan Heights lost control of the blue Nissan 350Z coupe while trying to merge onto eastbound state Route 54 from northbound Interstate 5 in National City at high speed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Alerted by a witness who saw Perez's vehicle veer off the connector and plunge down a steep embankment just south of the Sweetwater River, California Highway Patrol officers searched the area but were unable to find the car or driver.About four hours after the accident, a worker at a shipbuilding yard alongside the freeway ramp found the wrecked Nissan in a mud pond with Perez's body partially ejected from the driver's side door, the CHP reported. 910
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man climbed through a window of a Pacific Beach home Monday morning and attacked a woman in her bedroom before fleeing, police said.Dispatchers received a call around 5:15 a.m. from the victim, who reported that she found a man in her bedroom after he apparently entered through a window of her home on Grand Avenue near Olney Street, San Diego police public-affairs Officer Billy Hernandez said.The woman also reported that the man had attacked her, but she was able to get away and lock herself in her roommate's bedroom before calling police, Hernandez said.Officers arrived and searched the home, but found no one inside. Paramedics treated the victim for minor injuries, including a bloody nose, but she declined transport to a hospital, Hernandez said.No detailed description of the intruder was immediately available. 852
