The Associated Press has obtained text messages that a U.S. Census Bureau supervisor in Alabama sent to workers that told them how to fake counts of households by entering misleading data.According to the AP's report, texts from the supervisor in October laid out how census takers should fake data to mark a household as only having one resident, even if census takers were unsure of how many people lived in the home.The supervisor's text instructed census takers to mark a household as only being occupied by a single person if they made two failed attempts to interview the residents and two failed attempts to reach landlords or neighbors."You are to clear the case indicating occupied by 1," said the text from the census supervisor in Dothan, Alabama.A census worker from Florida who traveled to Alabama to help with areas lagging behind on the county provided the texts to the AP on condition of anonymity to protect her privacy.The Census Bureau says it's investigating and hasn't identified any data irregularities.The attempts to suppress the population count came as Trump administration officials successfully shortened the Census schedule by two weeks. Critics contend that the count was cut short so the Trump administration could enforce an order to exclude undocumented immigrants from the count.Under-counting a given area in the Census suppresses the allocation of resources to that area and skews congressional districts.The Associated Press reports the Census Bureau has denied that it attempted to falsify information during the 2020 census, but the AP has reported that similar instructions were sent to other regions. 1649

Starbucks says it has developed a solution to block customers from viewing pornography on its free public Wi-Fi.The coffee giant originally promised to block pron sites in 2016 as soon as it developed a system to block graphic sites. Starbucks has not divulged details on how its content filtering system will work.According to Business Insider, Starbucks' policy change comes after a petition issued by an internet safety group Enough Is Enough garnered 26,000 signatures. The group's CEO, Donna Rice Hughes, claims that by allowing unfiltered Wi-Fi, Starbucks was "keeping the doors wide open for convicted sex offenders and others to fly under the radar from law enforcement and use free, public Wi-Fi services to access illegal child porn and hard-core pornography."Starbucks said in a statement to The Verge that “While it rarely occurs, the use of Starbucks public Wi-Fi to view illegal or egregious content is not, nor has it ever been permitted...We have identified a solution to prevent this content from being viewed within our stores and we will begin introducing it to our US locations in 2019.”According to Enough Is Enough, Starbucks was lagging behind other restaurant chains like McDonald's and Subway, both of which banned pornography on their Wi-Fi networks in 2016.Alex Hider is a writer for the E.W. TEMPE, Ariz. — An Arizona woman said a man posing as a Lyft driver tried luring her into his car. Around 9 p.m. Saturday, Bradie Trippi was waiting to be picked up in a parking lot in Tempe, Arizona. The Lyft app showed her driver was a minute away when a man in a gold Infiniti sedan pulled up next to her, she said. “He says, ‘I’m your Lyft’ and then took a phone, flashed it in my face,” Trippi told KNXV. She said the man showed her the passenger app — not the driver app — and the letter “f” of the “Lyft” emblem on his car was backward. Given the fact the man did not match the photo of her driver or description of her driver’s car, Trippi declined to get in the car. “He got aggressive,” she said. “Told me to get in the car, he’s gonna kill me, called me the ‘b word’, started yelling the ‘f word’ at me — I got kind of scared.”When her actual Lyft driver arrived, Trippi said the man sped off. Lyft and Uber spokespeople told KNXV that passengers should always check to make sure the photo of their driver, description of the vehicle and license plate match up before getting inside. Passengers should ask open-ended questions to their driver, like “who are you here to pick up?” Instead of “Are you here to pick up [name]?”Trippi and her actual Lyft driver described the imposter driver as a bald, African-American man with an accent.
