SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Cathedral Catholic High School students took part in a protest Tuesday against a ban on skirts as uniform options for girls. Officials at the Carmel Valley school changed the dress code Friday for the 2019-2020 school year. CCHS said it would ban the uniform skirts, citing multiple detentions based on enforcement. Female students will have the option to wear pants, capri pants, or Bermuda shorts, the school said. “By removing the option for girls to wear skirts at a Catholic school not only demeans me as a female, but makes me wonder if we are moving towards a gender neutral society. I believe this is sexist, patriarchal and sexualizes the female students unnecessarily,” said freshman student Rachel Donaldson. They are there to educate and guide- this is a simple task,” wrote Donaldson. A student created a petition on Change.org to keep skirts as part of the uniform option. By Tuesday afternoon, about 3,000 people had signed online. “It’s not practical to make girls go out and buy new uniforms when they’ve already paid hundreds for the ones they currently wear, our parents are already investing enough money on our education,” said commenter Mia M. on the Change.org petition. “Females should be able to choose what they feel comfortable in and not have their sense of elegance and femininity taken away from them. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Authorities are investigating a car fire in Spring Valley that may possibly be linked to a fire that scorched part of a La Mesa hair salon less than half an hour before.At around 3:10 a.m. Monday, firefighters and sheriff’s Bomb/Arson investigators were called to the Slay Lounge on 8739 Broadway in La Mesa in response to a fire in a Dumpster.The fire caused some minor damage to the salon and some other businesses at the strip mall.Investigators discovered an object at the scene that may have sparked the blaze.Less than 30 minutes later, crews were called to an import auto car lot in the 9100 block of Campo Road in Spring Valley in response to a car on fire. One car was completely destroyed, and the flames damaged other nearby vehicles. Investigators are trying to determine if the car fire is somehow related to the Dumpster fire in La Mesa. No injuries were reported in either blaze. 921

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - As a Hillcrest man showered in his apartment, an intruder was helping himself to a "priceless" pendant.The surveillance video that Ramon Castillo has seen countless times remains hard to watch."Scary and very disturbing," said Castillo.In late June on a Monday morning just before 9, Castillo was showering in his apartment on 3rd Avenue. What he didn't know know: he wasn't alone. When Castillo got out of the shower after 20 minutes, the screen door which had been locked was completely open. Surveillance video revealed why. In it, a man pauses at the door and somehow gets past the screen door, before quietly raiding the apartment. Among the items stolen were speakers and a safe from a bedroom closet. Inside the safe: cash, personal documents and jewelry, including a silver pendant containing the ashes of her mother. She passed away in 2015 from an accidental drug overdose."I can't replace that. It's the last thing of my mom and now I don't have anything," said Castillo.The thief who snatched it was in and out in about five minutes. He was seen driving off in a sedan. Castillo say the burglar had to have heard the shower running and went in anyways."He didn't think twice about it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – At a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, San Diego Police Chief David Nisleit and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer announced new policies on de-escalation and an officer's duty to intervene.Mayor Faulconer said the changes come three weeks after he called for a series of public meetings for feedback on community and police relations.“These policies are meant to protect the officer as much as the subject and prevent escalation whenever possible before force is used,” he told reporters.The first of SDPD'S two new stand-alone policies requires officers, when safe and reasonable, to use techniques that can resolve situations either through lower levels of force or no force at all.The second new stand-alone policy requires officers to step in if another officer is using unreasonable force and mandates that they report the incident to a supervisor.“Let me be clear. It's not as though the SDPD was operating without de-escalation tactics before but now the department has separate, expanded stand-alone policies that don't just suggest de-escalation, they require it,” added Mayor Faulconer.“It's an absolute. It's a mandate that if an officer sees an officer using force that is unreasonable for the obstacle that they're trying to overcome, that the officer must intervene,” said Chief Nisleit.Samantha Jenkins with the Community Advisory Board on Police Practices and NAACP San Diego told reporters, “This new level of built-in accountability will hopefully usher in a new culture of policing in San Diego.”“We thank God for everyone that's been a part of this.
