(KGTV) - Two threats to shoot students at Bonita Vista High School spread in a snap on social media Sunday, scaring students and parents, making them wary to go back to class Monday."It kinda caught fire on Snapchat that's where it spread like wildfire and everyone was talking about it it was everywhere," Bonita Vista High senior Andrew Garcia said. It was a screenshot of an Instagram comment that read, "Shooting up on the campus Monday. I like some of you. Try to skip school if you value your life." Another comment below read, "I don't think you guys are gonna wanna hide in the 900s," apparently referring to the campus' "math village."Another threat coming out around 9:30 p.m. with a similar message. (KGTV) -- The Sweetwater Union High School District announced Thursday that it plans to reopen August 3.According to the district, only distance or virtual learning will be available on August 3. No on campus instruction will be available.On August 28, the district will transition to "Phase 1" where 10 percent of students will be allowed on campus at any given time.As public health orders permit, the campus will move into phase two, where 20 percent of students will be allowed on campus. Phase three will see 50 percent or more of students on campus plus "some activities." (KGTV) -- A Chula Vista woman's holiday decorations vanished from her lawn Thursday morning — but she's determined not to let "the Grinch" steal her Christmas spirit.It was beginning to look a lot like Christmas at Wendy Claproth's home in East Chula Vista. Since her husband's passing ten years ago, Claproth says she did not have the spirit to spread Christmas cheer outside. But this year, she finally got the courage to give it a shot.On her front lawn, she put up a large blowup Christmas tree snowman, hung lights along the roof, set up candy canes, wrapped her mailbox, and even created a Christmas tree with a set of lights. Her house screamed "festive." But on Thursday morning, she noticed that her brand new Christmas tree snowman inflatable was gone."Yes, you get mad, but more than anything, you get disappointed," Claproth said.It wasn't the wind, and it definitely was not an accident. Thieves had ripped the blowup right from her lawn, leaving only the stakes."It was kind of angled towards the corner all by itself over there, so I guess it was an easy prey," Claproth sighed.She wrote about the incident in her neighborhood app and found that she was not the only victim. Many others chimed in, saying the Grinch stole their Christmas decorations as well.Chula Vista Police says while there are not too many official reports of stolen decorations, these thefts, unfortunately, are common during the holiday season. (KGTV) - A fire in a drainage tunnel had Chula Vista firefighters donning protective masks Thursday.The fire broke out about 4:30 Thursday afternoon at Eastlake Parkway and Otay Lakes Road, near the Vons and Lowe's shopping centers. It was quickly knocked down."Witnesses reported smoke billowing from a storm drain and several people running from the area," Chula Vista Fire IAFF local 2180 officials posted on twitter. "Please give our firefighters room while they work."The Chula Vista Fire Department said juveniles started the fire in the drain and left the area. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The Chula Vista City Council Tuesday approved a number of items to help people struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The city’s eviction moratorium was extended until at least July 31, giving renters relief if they cannot make their monthly rent payments.The council also approved a .5 million small business grant program to reimburse businesses for losses caused by the closures during the pandemic. The money comes from the federal government. Businesses can apply for the grant on the city’s website and must meet certain criteria. Some of the requirements include having less than 10 employees, being independently owned and not being an essential business.For businesses along Third Avenue, the relief is welcome. Chula Vista Brewery has moved their business outdoors and continued curbside pick-up to stay afloat during the pandemic.In a move to expand outdoor dining, Chula Vista’s council approved a permitting process to allow businesses on Third Avenue to expand into the public right of way, with social distancing and ADA compliance. This will allow for things like sidewalk and curb cafes.The city also authorized the closure of a portion of Third Avenue to traffic.
