The Cambridge Analytica?scandal has thrust Facebook privacy settings into the national conversation after the political firm used the personal data of about 50 million people without their consent.Now, Mozilla is helping Firefox users keep their Facebook data secure so they won't be exploited in the future.The company has introduced a Firefox extension that it says will make it much harder for Facebook to track which websites you browse.Facebook has developed a network of trackers that tell the social media site which of its users are visiting certain webpages, like online retailers. Facebook will then use that information to serve its users ads based on what products they've been viewing.Mozilla says its Facebook Container extension will make it much more difficult to track which websites you visit, and keep your browsing information private.Mozilla admits the extension isn't perfect. In a blog post, the company said that the extension would not have prevented user information from being abused in the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It also says that Facebook Container would not work well on sites which require you to use Facebook information to log in.But Mozilla says the simple step of downloading the extension is giving power back to internet users. "Troves of data are being collected on your behavior on the internet, and so giving users a choice to limit what they share in a way that is under their control is important," the company wrote.To download Facebook container, first download the free Mozilla Firefox browser if you're not already using it. The coronavirus outbreak has put a hold on many things over the last few months, including some elective surgeries.When Nohely Uriostegui and her husband, Jose Pava, found out they were pregnant with a little boy, they were ecstatic. Then, the unfortunate news: their baby had spina bifida."After that, she said we’re going to do a test. You might be eligible for an in-utero surgery," said Uriostegui.That means surgery while the baby is still in the womb, and it had to be performed before 26 weeks of pregnancy. Everything was set up to go in Chicago until a phone call came from her doctor."He said, 'You know what? Based on COVID, everybody here on the team doesn’t feel like it’s an essential type of surgery,’" recalled Uriostegui.The same situation was unfolding for all types of patients around the country. Those hoping surgery could help their chronic pain were told they’d have to endure it for months longer. Organ transplant candidates were forced to wait as well. For Nohely and Jose, a delay meant they might miss their window to help their baby. But then, hope from three states away in Colorado."For this family, the clock was ticking. She had until she was 26 weeks to have fetal intervention, and that was literally five days, four days away. And they had to get from Chicago to here, be evaluated, have surgery set up to be performed, and so, we were able to do that for them," said Colorado Fetal Care Center surgeon Dr. Ken Liechty.The couple decided to travel to Colorado to have the procedure done."I got there on the 4th; my surgery was set for Monday, April 6, which was the exact same date that I was going to get it done in Chicago, and it was one day before I hit the 26-week mark," said Uriostegui."It’s open fetal surgery on the fetus as the actual patient," said Dr. Liechty. "We excise the cyst, we put the spinal cord back into the spinal canal."Doctors then put the muscle back over to seal it, close the skin over it, and then close the uterus. Without the in-utero surgery, Dr. Liechty says 90 percent of babies with spina bifida have a shunt put in to decompress the brain. However, that likely wouldn’t have been the only surgery he would have needed."These shunts fail, they can get infected, they can have all kinds of problems, they average seven surgeries at least for these shunts in their first few years of their life," said Dr. Liechty.In the time of this pandemic, that could mean more waiting as hospital beds begin to fill back up with coronavirus patients."COVID-19 caused a lot of places around the country to reexamine what cases could be done in their facilities, and a number of fetal centers are actually located in adult centers," said Dr. Liechty.Those places are filling up faster than children's hospitals, causing families like Uriostegui and her husband to almost miss opportunities to help their children before they even enter the world."The neurosurgeon over there actually said to us last time, that if you were to look at him, you would have never guessed that he’s born with spina bifida or that we went through this whole journey," said Uriostegui. 3126

The Carr Fire raging in Northern California is so large and hot that it is actually creating its own localized weather system with variable strong winds, making it difficult for experts to predict which way the blaze will spread.At least seven people were still missing in Shasta County, California, as shifting winds, dry fuel and steep terrain helped the monstrous fire engulf almost 100,000 acres by Sunday night, authorities said.The fire has claimed six lives, including a firefighter and bulldozer operator working to extinguish the blaze.Sixteen people had been reported missing, but nine of those have been found safe, according to Shasta County Sheriff Tom Bosenko, who spoke at a Sunday news conference.The fire, which started a week ago, has burned 98,724 acres and is just 20 percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire.Flames have destroyed at least 966 structures in the area, making it one of the top 10 most destructive wildfires in California history. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and stressful time for families, but we're seeing one silver lining when it comes to fathers and their kids.Nearly 70% of dads in a recent study from the Harvard Graduate School of Education say they're feeling closer to their kids right now.The dads have had to be home more than usual, but one of the people involved with the study also believes it's helping that dads may be less distracted with work than they usually are.Also, parents' social lives have changed, so they're doing things with their kids they may have done with their friends previously.Dads in the study say they're also getting to know their kids better. More than half say they're spending more time talking to their children about things that are important to them.“I think we're all better parents when we know our kids better,” said Richard Weissbourd, who directs the Making Caring Common Project at Harvard. “I mean it's respectful to enable our kids to really speak, but we also learn a lot about them and it deepens our relationships with them and it also helps us I think in being mentors and guides to them when they make key decisions in their lives.”The Making Caring Common Project is a national effort to make moral and social development priorities in raising kids.Weissbourd is worried there will be a strong pull to return to our normal lives and dads' relationships won't continue in the same way.But you can take steps now to keep those bonds.“I really encourage fathers to establish rituals and routines with their kids now, like if you're going for a walk every weekend with your kid, continue doing that even when the pandemic is over,” said Weissbourd. “If you're playing games with your kid, develop a ritual around playing games with your kids or activities.”He says more fathers are also watching TV with their kids and talking with them about what's going on in the world surrounding the pandemic and the protests.
