SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Airport Authority announced Monday that the Pacific Highway Economy parking lot will permanently close to the public the day after Christmas.The lot will be converted into employee parking, according to airport officials. The need for a new employee lot was brought on by construction of a new stormwater infiltration system at the south side of the runway, where employees currently park. The new system is part of the airport's Stormwater Management Plan to control and reduce pollution caused by the airport's day-to-day operations.Airport travelers will still be able to use the parking lots at both terminals, the Terminal 2 parking plaza and the airport's long-term parking lot. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The guided-missile destroyer USS Pinckney returned to Naval Station San Diego today following a nine-month deployment. Pinckney, along with a detachment from Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 75, deployed in January with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group to the U.S. 7th Fleet/East Asia/Pacific region. The Pinckney crew in April joined with the U.S. 4th Fleet's Caribbean and Central and South America areas of operation for counternarcotics operations.``The sailors of Pinckney have helped make the United States a safer place to live,'' said Cmdr. Andrew Roy, Pinckney's commanding officer. ``I thank all Pinckney sailors and U.S. Coast Guardsmen who overcame many obstacles to make sure illicit narcotics will never make it into our homes, schools or communities.''During Pinckney's deployment, the crew of the destroyer -- along with an embarked U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment -- recovered 9,800 kilograms of cocaine and 2,800 pounds of marijuana with an estimated wholesale value of 0 million. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced new and enhanced safety protocols for horses and jockeys Wednesday which will be in effect for the Del Mar race track's 80th racing season which begins July 17.The initiatives include a mandate for a five-person review panel to analyze each horse's racing, medical and training history to ensure each horse is safe to race and a ban on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication fewer than 48 hours before a race or a workout. After remaking its dirt track with the help of race track consultant Dennis Moore and implementing additional safety measures like adding a radiology and ultrasound facility along the track's backstretch, only five horses died during Del Mar's 2017 season and six during its 2018 season.After instituting the changes, Del Mar has been rated one of the safest horse racing venues in the U.S., tallying only 0.79 horse deaths per 1,000 starts last year, according to the Jockey Club Equine Injury Database. No federal funds will be expended for the project."We're dedicating our fifth Annual "Virtual Gala" fund-raiser to the Armed Forces Memorial Amphitheater, said Charlie Inot, Support Foundation president and CEO. "We're asking corporations, members of veterans' organizations and civic groups, as well as the public, to help make this vision for Miramar a reality through their generous contributions."The plan for the amphitheater includes long concrete benches arranged in a semi-circle within the existing flag assembly area. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego City Council voted unanimously Monday to amend an agreement between former Mayor Bob Filner and the developer Carmel Partners over the development of an apartment complex that drew criticism.The development's current owner, Trea Blvd63, LLC, sought to nullify the agreement, which required the development's owner to rent apartments to tenants by the room rather than by the bed. When it was being built in 2013, opponents of the apartment complex argued that it more closely resembled a dormitory rather than the luxury units it was billed as.``I applaud my council colleagues for correcting these corrupt mistakes of the past, and moving forward from Filner's blatant misuse of power,'' Sherman said. ``This is a good reminder that big problems happen when elected officials abuse the power of their office.''Carmel Partners began work on the CentrePoint apartment complex, located in Rolando, in 2013. The city ordered the stoppage of construction of the complex, citing the need for additional construction permits.
