The Senate has passed a defense spending bill that President Donald Trump has said he plans to veto, according to the Associated Press. The National Defense Authorization Act passed the Senate with a 84 to 13 Friday. The annual bill affirms a 3% pay raise to U.S. troops and unlocks billions in military spending. The bill passed despite an attempt from Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, to filibuster the bill and delay its passage. Paul said Thursday he opposed the bill because it limited Trump's ability to withdraw troops from the Middle East before he leaves office.Trump has threatened to veto the bill unless lawmakers include a provision that would remove Section 230 from the 1996 Communications Decency Act. That section protects tech companies from being sued for content that other people post on their website.Conservative lawmakers have attacked the provision in recent years, saying that the protections have led social media conglomerates to develop a liberal bias on the social media sites. Proponents of the provision say it upholds free-market values in the marketplace of information.Congress is expected to override a potential veto from Trump. The House of Representatives easily passed the bill earlier this month with a vote of 335-78. 1260

The University of Arizona and Boeing joined forces to find disinfectants that will kill COVID-19 and help make air travel safer. The project known as the Confident Travel Initiative is designed to test out cleaning solutions that can destroy the Coronavirus. Arizona microbiology professor Dr. Charles Gerba, who is known as "Dr. Germ," says he’s been working with Boeing since the summer to test cleaning products as part of the initiative to make flying as safe as possible during the pandemic and beyond.“It's really innovative to try to get a coating that will be antiviral," he said. "I think it’s the next step in hygiene and disinfection adding another barrier between when they clean and regularly disinfect aircraft. We’re looking at coatings. And anytime the virus lands on it would kill it, so you don’t have to keep disinfecting all the time."The team conducted laboratory testing by using a virus called MS2 on surfaces inside of an unoccupied plane. The virus has similar characteristics to the virus that causes COVID-19.“It would protect you from when they disinfect it or clean the aircraft. In case the virus lands again on a surface in the aircraft. We’ve been evaluating the overhead bins, the seats, the trays, the handles,” Gerba said.Cleaning solutions and ultraviolet wands were also used throughout the plane and according to Boeing, the results show that antimicrobial coatings were effective for extended periods of time and won’t be harmful to passengers. While Gerba didn’t share the names of the disinfectants, he did say the products can potentially be used on public transportation and other high traffic areas.“We actually did some of the work in the aircraft going in and contaminating certain areas like the tray in the aircraft the overhead bin and then evaluating the disinfectants to show they could kill the virus," Gerba said. "I see this new technology of self-disinfecting surfaces will revolutionize public places in cleanliness, cars, and buses you name it. These are products already on the market and they are new innovative products where you can put down a coating and it will last for hours, weeks, or maybe even months."The research project is expected to be done with other viruses by the end of the year and airplane cleanings will be done between flights.“It all has a big benefit I think it's going to add that extra barrier to me it’s the next generation of infection control and the spread of disease,” Gerba said. This story was first reported by Shawndrea Thomas at KGUN Tucson, Arizona. 2552

The woman involved in the domestic violence charge against NFL linebacker Reuben Foster said the Washington Redskins' decision to pick him up just days after his arrest felt like "a slap in the face.""I just couldn't believe somebody picked him up in less than -- how many hours?" Foster's ex-girlfriend, Elissa Ennis, said Thursday on ABC's Good Morning America, or GMA. "Like, I was shocked."The interview came more than a week after Foster, 24, then a linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree misdemeanor domestic violence in Tampa, Florida. Ennis, 28, reported that Foster pushed and slapped her during an encounter on November 24 at a hotel, police said.Ennis' attorney, Adante Pointer, released photos of Ennis' injuries after the assault."After having endured this relationship and then watching her name be tarnished in the press and then watching this person, from her perspective, go unpunished, she wanted to make sure that her side of the story got out," Pointer said.Ennis told GMA it was the third time an incident like this one had happened, including a February case in Los Gatos, California, that resulted in a criminal charge against Foster that was later dismissed and another occasion in October when "neighbors called the police."CNN reached out Thursday to Foster for comment. He has not commented publicly since the November arrest. The 49ers released Foster the morning after the latest incident. Days later, the Redskins picked him up on waivers. The NFL said Foster has been placed on the commissioner's exempt list, which means he cannot practice or play with the team as the league reviews his arrest.Still, the move to immediately hire a player twice arrested for domestic violence sparked widespread outrage for a league that has struggled to deal with several players committing violence against women. Another NFL player, Kansas City Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, was released last week after video showed him pushing and kicking a woman in a Cleveland hotel.  2061
