A Kansas City man was arrested after he allegedly assaulted three people outside a Platte County motel and shot a service dog who tried to intervene in the attack. According to a probable cause statement, Mardrecuis D. Williams, 25, got into a fight with a person on Feb. 26 at a Motel 6. Both Williams and the other person were asked to leave the motel and not return. After being asked to leave, Williams returned twice overnight and knocked on the victims’ door, saying that he would kill them, according to the report. The next day, as the three victims were checking out and walking toward their vehicle, Williams and another suspect allegedly came out from behind a dumpster and began attacking them. At one point, Lolly, a 3-year-old Border Collie, attacked Williams, and he allegedly shot the service dog, the report said. Lolly was taken to an area animal hospital, where she had surgery to repair the gunshot wound to her left side and a ruptured spleen. Her intestines had fallen out due to the impact of the bullet, which veterinary staff also repaired. In addition, she had a three-inch laceration to her rear leg. The female victim told police that she suffers from a condition that causes joint pain, dizziness and panic attacks. A former fraternity member and student at Truman State University in Missouri allegedly provided "step-by-step" directions to five people who died by suicide in 2016 and 2017, according to a lawsuit filed Wednesday against the university, the fraternity and the student.The member of the Alpha Kappa Lambda fraternity told people he considered himself a superhero nicknamed "peacemaker," parents of two of the deceased allege in the suit, which identifies the accused as Brandon Grossheim.Grossheim counseled people with "step-by-step directions" for using their own free will and to "deal with depression," according to a news release issued by lawyers for the parents of Alex Mullins, 21, and Joshua Thomas, 18.Grossheim gave no comment to CNN's repeated requests."Both the University and the Fraternity were aware that the Plaintiff victims were vulnerable and suffered from depression, yet they still allowed this suspicious fraternity brother to be alone and have unfettered access to the victims," the release states. "This tragedy was preventable."The lawsuit alleges negligence and wrongful death and seeks unspecified damages."It is our understanding that a lawsuit has been filed by the parents of Alex Mullens and Joshua Thomas, two members of the Xi Chapter of the Fraternity of Alpha Kappa Lambda, in connection with their deaths. A 73-year-old hiker was rescued Saturday after spending seven days in the wilderness, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department spokesman Edmo Luna said.Eugene Jo went missing June 22 after becoming separated from a hiking group near Mount Waterman in the San Gabriel Mountains of the Angeles National Forest, according to a Twitter post from the Montrose Search and Rescue Team.Jo was discovered Saturday morning around 11 a.m. Pacific time, according to the search and rescue team. Scientists are working to eliminate a type of heart disease in dogs using gene therapy. They're zoning in on a heart condition called mitral valve disease that’s common in 6% of dogs. Scientists are using Cavalier King Charles spaniels for the research. They tend to develop it at a younger age. Scientists at Tufts University have already tested gene therapy in mice. A virus is injected into them to deliver DNA to cells which causes them to create a protein. What it essentially does is stops the heart valve from getting thicker, stopping the valve from leaking. Researchers are now moving on to testing this in dogs. But they think the treatment could go beyond just canines. “Many of the dog diseases are naturally occurring and really great models for human disease,” says Dr. Vicky Yang, a veterinary cardiologist and research assistant professor at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. “And I can see this, if it becomes successful in dogs, potentially going into thinking about treatment for humans for mitral valve disease.”The biotech company behind the treatment agrees. It says it could also expand beyond heart problems. “I think a larger question, though, is if we are able to prove this thesis of treating aging, making the animal generally healthier, could also treat heart failure, what other diseases could we treat in dogs?” says Daniel Oliver, the CEO of Rejuvenate Bio. “And could we progress this treatment onto past dogs and other animals and possibly humans?” The gene therapy would only be used for dogs just starting to experience heart problems.Researchers still need to make sure the gene therapy is safe for all breeds before they make it available to the public. 1730

A Chick-fil-A employee in Georgia is being credited with saving a boy from getting strangled after the mother reportedly begged for help in the drive thru of the fast food restaurant. Security camera video shows Logan Simmons jumped out of the drive thru window and into the distressed customer's car. He then pulled out a knife and cut the boy's seat belt. "You could see he was turning red and losing pigmentation in his face," Simmons told WSB-TV. "I just jumped out the window and ran straight down to the car."WSB reported that the boy received a call an hour later from the boy's mom thanking him for his actions.
