SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After successive years of devastating wildfires, California's fire agency announced a plan Tuesday that would dramatically increase logging and other forest management efforts with the help of the National Guard.The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection released a list of 35 priority fuel-reduction projects it wants to start immediately across the state over roughly 90,000 acres. That's double the acreage the agency aimed to cover in the current fiscal year, CalFire Deputy Chief Scott McLean said.The agency is also seeking National Guard assistance to coordinate the work. They include removing dead trees, clearing vegetation, and creating fuel breaks, defensible spaces and ingress and egress corridors.The projects prioritize communities at high risk from wildfires but also with significant numbers of vulnerable groups such as the elderly or poor. They include work around the city of Redding, which was also devastated by wildfire last year, and in Butte County, where Paradise is located.An estimated 15 million acres of forest land in California are in need of thinning or other restoration work, so the 35 projects are just a start, Calfire officials said. Calfire should focus more on clearing brush around homes and ensuring their roofs and attics are safe from flying embers, she said."We need to make sure we're doing the things that we know will protect homes," she said.Calfire does call on officials to identify options for retrofitting homes as part of its recommendations released Tuesday. 2954

(KGTV) - An open letter to the World Health Organization titled “It is Time to Address Airborne Transmission of COVID-19” is signed by 239 scientists from 32 different countries and highlights the importance of acknowledging and protecting the public against the possibility that coronavirus can be spread through the air. One San Diego scientist who signed is from the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Doctor Kim Prather.The idea shared is that COVID-19 can be spread from aerosols, which are particles that float in the air rather than dropping to the ground like a droplet. An infected person breathes out aerosols that are suspended in the air, then another person walks through that air and breathes it in.It’s no secret that heath officials have discussed the importance of good airflow to stop the spread, but this paper says leaders like the WHO are not recognizing the possibility that it is airborne and the “lack of clear recommendations on the control measures against the airborne virus will have significant consequences: people may think that they are fully protected by adhering to the current recommendations, but in fact, additional airborne interventions are needed for further reduction of infection risk.”Researchers say wearing masks and social distancing are important steps to stopping the spread, but want to also emphasize that other steps need to be taken to stop the spread through the air. SAN DIEGO (KGVT) -- Parents of San Diego Unified School District students will hold a demonstration Tuesday with a goal for the school district to return to full-time, in-person education as soon as possible.Parent and family therapist Gina Smith said she started the group called "Reopen SDUSD" because she is frustrated that other San Diego County districts have set reopening dates, and many private schools are already open. The group has already started a petition which has more than 650 signatures."What sparked the fire is that other schools have reopening plans within weeks and San Diego Unifed has been silent," Smith said.San Diego Unified has not released any definitive dates or a timeline for reopening.Currently, the district is reporting a projected loss of 2,474 students. Two out of every three un-enrolled students are kindergartners. Enrolling children into kindergarten is not mandatory in the state of California.The district has a meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening, and before that meeting, hundreds of parents are expected to rally over their concerns about distance learning. Some parents say they're concerned about the mental health impact distance learning is having on their children."The isolation and lack of social interaction is a huge part that many children as young as five are experiencing depressive symptoms", Smith said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- The tenants of two galleries in North Park tell 10News the new owner of their building has raised the rent so high they're been left with no choice but to leave. Owners at The Studio Door and Good Friday will both be gone from their current location on 30th Street by the end of the summer. "It was devastating we've been searching trying to find something new another space but the rents are just so high right now, " said Chris Smith, who has been with The Studio Door for nearly four years.Smith says the rent went from ,000 a month to nearly ,000. He says the galleries were some of the only left in the area."There used to be a lot of artists and art galleries here in North Park," he said. "That's what really built up North Park to be what it is and as the rents went up they all just get pushed out." So far there's no word on what will take over the spaces once the current tenants are out. 965
