HANGZHOU, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Rescue efforts are continuing to save a worker trapped 18 meters under sea surface for almost 18 hours in Jiaxing Harbor, east China's Zhejiang Province, local authorities said.The worker, 43, surnamed Fan from central China's Hubei Province, was stuck at the bottom of a steel shielding canister in which he was working at 9 a.m. Thursday. The shielding canister deformed under sudden increase of hydraulic pressure from flood tide, according to local media report.The shielding canister, a part of an offshore platform, is one meter in diameter. Fan was working at the bottom of the canister that joins a cement column when the incident happened.Rescue staff said, "We are making slow progress because of complex geological conditions. The deformed section, about two to four meters under the sea surface, has been squeezed to only 3cm wide at the narrowest part."Thankfully, the shielding canister has not fractured, though seriously deformed.Rescue workers have decided to cut the cement column off the seabed to lift the shielding canister.Rescue efforts started at 10 a.m. Thursday. Food, including ham sausages and drinking water were supplied to the worker, through a flexible pipe. Fan asked for some cigarettes.Fan's family members have arrived at the site, praying for him at the bank.

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Beijing should be tolerant and open-minded toward migrants as it tries to manage its fast-growing population in the next five years, said a Beijing political advisor responding to a government plan to limit the city's population.Excessive growth of Beijing's population, partly as a result of the influx of migrants, has brought tremendous pressure on the environment and resources, said Wu Yongping, a member of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) on Sunday.But migrant population also made great contributions to the capital city's development, said Wu, also deputy director with the School of Public Policy and Management, Tsinghua University,."Beijing, as a city belonging to the people of the whole country, should have the quality of openness," Wu told a press conference on the sidelines of the annual session of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the CPPCC.Also, Beijing should open to the entire world as only a tolerant and open-minded city could maintain its momentum of sustainable development, Wu said.Wu's remarks came in response to a draft development plan submitted Sunday to the annual session of the Beijing Municipal People's Congress, the local legislature.According to the draft plan, Beijing will rein in the "unordered and excessive" growth of its population during the next five years.By the end of 2009, Beijing's population had reached nearly 20 million, far exceeding the State Council-ratified target of controlling the population to within 18 million by the year 2020.

BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature said Monday in a statement that it will continue discussing a draft amendment to the Criminal Law, which proposes tougher punishments for those involved in organized crime and drink-driving.Members of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee will discuss the draft amendment at an upcoming bi-monthly session scheduled for Dec. 20-25, according to a statement issued after a meeting of the chairman and vice-chairpersons of the NPC Standing Committee, presided over by chairman Wu Bangguo.The legislature conducted the first reading of the draft amendment in August.Wu Bangguo (C), chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), presides over the 54th chairpersons' meeting of the 11th NPC Standing Committee at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 13, 2010. NANJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started to extend a memorial wall to engrave more names of those massacred by Japanese aggressors more than 70 years ago in Nanjing.After extension, the "wailing wall", a part of the Memorial Hall of the Victims in Nanjing Massacre by Japanese Invaders, will have 10,324 names on it, curator Zhu Chengshan said.The wall was engraved with 3,000 names when it was first built in 1995, and the list was expanded to more than 8,600 names in 2007 when the memorial reopened after a major repair and extension to mark the 70th anniversary of the massacre.The original wall was 43 meters long and 3.5 meters high. The extension will lengthen the wall by 26.5 meters, with 1,655 more names added to it, according to Zhu.Nanjing Massacre happened during World War II after Japanese troops occupied Nanjing, then capital of China, on Dec. 13, 1937. More than 300,000 Chinese were killed in the month-long atrocity.To collect the names of the victims is an important but tough job in the research of the massacre, as it is hard to seek witnesses and related documents decades after the holocaust, said Zhu.
