The Trump administration has formally asked the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to develop regulations that could apply to Facebook, Twitter and other such platforms. It's a key step toward President Donald Trump fulfilling his executive order to regulate social media. The order asks the FCC to clarify a section of law that has shielded tech companies from much litigation over internet content since 1996.The FCC — which is reviewing the Administration's petition — now has to decide whether to agree with the president's call for oversight or not.Legal experts say the agency has traditionally avoided regulating internet companies in the past. 662

The rising cost of a college education — and more importantly, the hefty loans that often follow — was a pre-pandemic problem that's only been exacerbated over the last several months.Roughly 45 million Americans currently hold .6 trillion on student debt — about 95% of it is held by the federal government. It's a major financial burden, especially in a time when unemployment has skyrocketed and the economy suffers through a pandemic-induced recession.Student debt averages to be about ,000 to ,000 per individual, with payments between 0 and 0 a month.Sen. Chuck Schumer is calling for the government to forgive up to ,000 per borrower. The Biden campaign had also suggested student debt forgiveness up to ,000.This story was first reported by Corey Crockett and Craig Treadway at WPIX in New York, New York. 840

The Republican National Committee spent more than 0,000 in August to cover some of President Donald Trump's legal fees associated with the federal investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, an RNC official told CNN on Tuesday. The RNC sent 1,250 to Trump's personal attorney Jay Sekulow, via the Constitutional Litigation and Advocacy Group, and 0,000 to John Dowd, the attorney Trump hired in June, the official said. The payments will be disclosed in the RNC's spending report for the month of August, which will be released on Wednesday.Reuters first reported on Tuesday that the RNC was helping Trump with his legal payments associated with the special counsel's investigation. CNN first obtained the total amount of the RNC's spending on Trump's legal bills. The President's legal bills were covered through the RNC's legal defense fund -- not its political coffers -- which the RNC official said was established in 2014 to cover legal fees associated with election-related litigation. The RNC's payments to cover Trump's legal bills come despite the President's claims that his net worth is in excess of billion. The party official said the committee has not yet decided whether it will continue to make payments to cover the President's legal bills. The RNC is just the latest Trump-supporting political group to get involved in making legal payments related to the Russia probe.Last quarter, the Trump campaign spent more than 7,826 on legal fees. Though it's unclear what portion of those fees are going to attorney fees related to the Russia investigation, the campaign has employed attorneys to comply with Russia-related requests and has also made payments to the attorney representing the President's son Donald Trump Jr. in the Russia probe. The Trump campaign spent nearly 0,000 in legal consulting fees -- or about 15.5% of the campaign's expenses between April 1 and June 30, according to the latest Federal Election Commission report. 1992

The state of Oregon became the first in the nation to decriminalize small amounts of hard drugs like heroin and cocaine by overwhelmingly passing Measure 110 on Tuesday.According to The Oregonian, the measure will reduce misdemeanor drug possession to a non-criminal violation, punishable by measures similar to a traffic stop. Violators will be given a ticket and a 0 fine, or be given the option of being screened for a subtance abuse disorder. Those found with larger amounts of drugs, who would have previously been charged with a felony, will now face a misdemeanor charge. The measure also redirects tax revenue from the sale of legal marijuana in the state toward Addiction Recover Centers, where people are screened for drug use and can also receive treatment for drug addiction.Supporters of the measure say the new policy will reduce the state's jail population, and in particular, free many offenders of non-violent crimes. Supporters also say the bill will promote racial equality in the state, as drug laws disproportionately affect Black people and other people of color.Opponents of the measure say it promotes drug use and will lead to more overdose deaths and overwhelm addiction centers in the state. The Oregonian also reports that the measure received funding from many out-of-state donors, including Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. The Associated Press reports that the measure passed with about 60% support. In addition to decriminalizing hard drug use, Oregon also legalized the sale and recreational use of Psilocybin, or magic mushrooms. The Associated Press reports that the measure passed with 56% support. 1650

The U.S. economy added 250,000 jobs in October, significantly exceeding expectations, the government announced Friday. The unemployment rate remained at 3.7 percent, a 49-year low. Wages grew 3.1 percent, strong growth after years of stagnant paychecks. The number will likely serve as a talking point for President Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans as they make closing arguments before the midterm elections next Tuesday. The year-over-year percentage growth in average hourly earnings looks larger than it actually is because wages declined last October as low-wage workers returned to their jobs following a particularly strong hurricane season. Month to month, hourly earnings increased by only five cents, a modest increase. 744
