"The Osprey was able to land in places that other aircraft were not able to, and carry out a much higher payload than any other helicopter possibly could have. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Veterinarians with the San Diego Humane Society say too many pets are packing on extra pounds.The shelter sees overweight pets every day and recently received a 26-pound cat named Angelo; his family could no longer care for him. "Even though a lot of people may perceive him to be cute or funny, for us it's alarming to see an animal this size," said Dr. Danielle Clem, Hospital Director for the San Diego Campus.Overweight pets like Angelo are at risk for health complications like diabetes and severe arthritis."I really am a firm believer that good pet care starts with what you put in their food dish - and it's as simple as that," said Dr. Clem.Hospital staff put Angelo on a strict diet and began to encourage exercise. But Dr. Clem warns that if your pet needs to lose weight, it should be done under veterinarian supervision. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Tracking citizen complaints about law enforcement is a requirement of California law. However, some say there needs to be a significant improvement in that process."Police officers have tremendous authority," said former police officer and criminal justice professor Kevin LaChapelle. He broke down how the process works."[In] a formal complaint, there should be written documentation and the agency is accountable for reporting that to the Department of Justice," LaChapelle said. LaChapelle says the formal complaint process differs from an informal complaint, where someone may talk to an officer or supervisor but no documentation is required. Those interactions are not included in DOJ numbers. When it comes to two of the largest departments in the county, Team 10 found the number of complaints differ drastically. In 2018, the San Diego Sheriff's Department reported nine complaints. In 2017, there were six reported complaints.San Diego Police Department reported 74 complaints last year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — With another round of coronavirus closures set to begin Saturday, several San Diego County businesses are fighting back legally.Despite the change to California's most restrictive reopening tier, Pacers and Cheetah's adult entertainment clubs won't be shutting their doors. Last week, the businesses won a suit against the county and a judge granted a temporary restraining order allowing them to stay open.An attorney representing Pacers told ABC 10News their argument centered around first amendment rights, and adult entertainment is a protected form of expression. It's unclear if that argument could apply to other businesses, but he added that there are other legal paths to challenging the closures.Another suit has also been filed by a group of San Diego County gyms, but no decision has been made yet.San Diego County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar says the legal actions are understandable given the tough situation."Now we're threatening the workforce again we're threatening the closure of these businesses again and I think this is entirely unsustainable for our business community," Gaspar said. Gaspar added that the county has appealed to the state to avoid the tier change, asking them to take into account other factors, including where a majority of outbreaks are linked to and the county's hospitalization rate."At this point in time our hospitalizations for COVID-19 are at 6%, there's a lot of capacity left in our hospitals system," Gaspar said.On the heels of the successful adult entertainment lawsuit, Gaspar says it stands to reason other businesses could do the same."You could make the case as a restaurant owner as a gym owner that our data does not support this decision to close down and closing down will create undue financial harm to these businesses it has already I think they have a strong compelling case," she said.Although individual businesses are fighting back legally, Gaspar says at this point, it doesn't appear the county has plans to file suit against the state."So far there hasn't been anything that's come out of those closed sessions to suggest that the County of San Diego will proceed along that route," said Gaspar. 2192

"It took a village of all of us in San Diego to make that happen."There are already many different types of COVID-19 tests on the market.But the scientists and engineers at Illumina came up with a test that reveals a lot more."Our test not only gives you a yes or no answer for the presence of the virus, but it also gives you the genetic sequence of the virus," Tousi said.On Tuesday, the FDA approved the Emergency use of the world's first COVID-19 test that also shows the biological makeup of the virus.The results can help researchers track and trace the virus and study different mutations over time and in different regions."Knowing this is really critical, not only to the development of effective vaccines but also for us to detect its presence, recurrence, and whether there is a mutated form that we need to be prepared for," Tousi said.The sample is collected via nose or throat swab and sent to the lab.A sequencing machine can run up 43,000 samples a week. From swab to results, it takes only 24 hours."This was the culmination of an incredible amount of work. And I'm confident we're going to make a big difference in the fight against COVID," Tousi said.
