SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Chicano Federation is once again calling on San Diego County officials to do more to help curb the high numbers of COVID-19 among Latinos. On Wednesday, the organization released a statement regarding county numbers breaking down the number of contact tracing hires by ethnicity. Of the county's recent hires, 144 are Latino or Hispanic, that makes up 25.5% of the hires. Chicano Federation President and CEO Nancy Maldonado said county officials had told them they would hire people from within the community, that spoke Spanish, to serve as contact tracers. However, in Wednesday's statement, Maldonado said, "They lied." Maldonado has been an outspoken critic of the county and their response to how COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting Latinos. Data from the county shows there are roughly 34% of Latinos in the county, but they make up 61% of the positive cases. During Wednesday's county press conference, Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher each addressed the concerns. Fletcher said the county's goal is to have contact tracers who match not only the demographics of the population, but also the demographics of the positive cases. Fletcher added that they are doing outreach to get more applicants and also more Spanish speakers. Maldonado told 10News she is confident the county will get it done, but says she wants to see more action, instead of hearing about plans for what they are going to do. 1449

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thanksgiving with the Salvation Army will be different in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic."We knew that we were going to do something," says Captain Sean Kelsley, who oversees the Salvation Army East County Operations. "The question was, what would it look like?"For the past 30 years, the Salvation Army held large, family-style gatherings to feed people experiencing homelessness, the disabled, and families in need at Golden Hall for Thanksgiving. They plan for 1,800 people, plus volunteers. But a gathering of 2,000+ people is strictly forbidden under California and San Diego County COVID-19 guidelines. In its place, the Salvation Army will offer "grab-and-go" style meals at four locations around the county."We're just glad to be able to be here," says Captain Kelsey. "However people celebrate the holidays, they'll at least be able to get some turkey and some gravy and all that good stuff."People will also receive an additional bag of fruit and snacks with their meals. In addition to providing food, Captain Kelsey says it's a way to connect with people and help them through whatever hardships they face."It allows us to encourage people and find out about a situation that is so dire, that maybe we can wrap around that individual that family, get them plugged in, and get them connected so they can get back on their feet," he says.Service for the meals will start at 11 am at the following locations:Oceanside Corps: 3935 Lake Blvd, Oceanside, CA 92056Centre City Corps: 825 7th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101Citadel Corps: 4170 Balboa Ave, San Diego, CA 92117El Cajon Red Shield Center: 1025 E. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The COVID-19 pandemic has left a big question mark in regards to NCAA athletics. However, that is not the case with California Junior Colleges, otherwise known as the CCCAA, as they have already come up with a plan for the fall. That means for the next 5 months, athletic fields at Mesa College will be quiet until early 2021."There was a lot of talk," says Mesa College Athletic Director Ryan Schumaker, "and a lot of plans, that included getting sports back on the field quicker. But it just didn't seem feasible, especially when we saw the state start to take steps backwards. It just seemed like the right thing to do, to push it back as far as we could."So in the case of Mesa College, all 21 of their athletic teams will not get started until some point in the spring."The goal is to get our student athletes on campus safely, as well as our staff," says Mesa College Head Football Coach Gary Watkins. "I know we won't start practice until February, but there may be some time in January to get in front of the boys. At that time, will get them acclimated physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, they have to be all in on their academics, and their future development."And with will all sports being pushed back until the spring, the athletic department at Mesa will have to figure out how to share the facilities."The spring is now split into two distinct seasons. We don't have all the answers yet, but we are working diligently to make sure all of our sports are taken care of for practice time and we also leave time for general population classes." 1593
