In the wake of Hurricane Dorian, a lot of animals in the Bahamas are left without owners to care for them and without homes to shelter in. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) sent a crew to the Bahamas, trying to find and save those animals that survived the Category 5 hurricane. Alex Johnson with IFAW spent days in the throes of Dorian’s aftermath.“It was apocalyptic, catastrophic, whatever you want to call it,” he describes. “It was, it was just, it was just devastating.”Johnson is part of a rescue team sent to Abaco to help stranded animals. “We have set up in Nassau a dispatch, a dispatch center, where people it's almost like a crisis hotline where we have someone getting calls from desperate pet owners looking for pets that were left behind,” he says. Johnson describes the visit as “eerie” as he walked through areas devastated by the storm.“You would just walk by these areas and just kind of get a whiff of like some foul stench,” Johnson describes. For the animals the group would find, they would classify them as being an urgent situation or not. Johnson describes a dog he encountered that needed urgent medical attention. However, soon after finding him, the dog passed away. “And that's just like the sad reality of how the situation is going,” he says.Johnson says he and his crew are trying to offer refuge. “People like me and my other teammates are there to kind of give these animals a fighting chance, because they're often forgotten and these type of situations,” Johnson says. The IFAW team says their top priority is getting animals out of the hardest-hit areas and reuniting the ones they can with their owners. IFAW says it will be on the ground as long as they’re needed. 1732
In the record-setting 562 participants of this year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, you will find nine sets of siblings. Sisters Triyatha and Pranathi Jamulla are one set of the siblings, and they think it’s pretty cool they both made it to the national competition. Last year, Triyatha watched Pranathi come in 25thplace in the National Spelling Bee, and it made her want to compete too. This year, the sisters tied in their school’s spelling bee, both earning a trip to nationals. It gave Pranathi a built-in study buddy.“Before, when it would just be me sitting at home and my sister would be out somewhere and doing something else, like it wouldn't be that motivating to study because I know like I'd rather be where she is,” Pranathi says. “And now that we're both in the room studying, it makes it easier to study, I guess.”It also meant Triyatha had an expert to tell her what to expect."Yeah, she definitely helps me to stay calm and composed and gives me a few tips on like winning languages and language patterns,” Triyatha explains.Their mom, Prasanna Jammula, says it’s easier having two spellers in the house.“They quiz each other. That's how they are learning, too," she says. "Now, we are on the same page right. Everybody’s working towards [the] spelling bee, so that makes it easy.”She says what matters most here is the girls’ experience. 1368

It’s almost that time of year again – time to spring our clocks forward for daylight saving time. We’ll lose an hour this weekend when our clocks jump an hour ahead early Sunday morning, going from 1:59 a.m. to 3 a.m. The point of daylight saving time is to make better use of daylight. The 303
In a chaotic incident that lasted more than hour, inmates inside a maximum security section at Lewis Prison repeatedly set fires outside of their cells, eventually forcing the evacuation of the entire unit. It happened on November 8, 2018 in the Rast Max Unit. Surveillance video obtained by KNXV television station shows a team of officers watched much of the destruction unfold with little or no intervention. The reason: Top officials inside the prison directed the staff to let inmates get it out of their system and avoid calling a critical incident, which would have to be thoroughly documented and sent to the Arizona Department of Corrections’ headquarters. As a result of this story, those top officials are no longer employed with the Department of Corrections. “The warden and the deputy warden of this unit, they were watching this cluster going on saying we want to minimize this,” said Carlos Garcia, a retired lieutenant and union grievance coordinator. “They don’t want anybody to see this and send out the message that we can’t control our prison. They are in fear, fear of this director.” The deputy warden was Jeff Rode, and the warden was Berry Larsen. Both retired Wednesday, the day after ABC15 contacted the state about the incident. KNXV spoke with independent sources who said both Rode and Larsen were aware of the chaotic situation. Outside experts who reviewed video of the incident said it is one of most bizarre, shocking, and poorly-handled incidents they’ve ever seen. 1513
