LEMON GROVE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died after being shot by deputies inside a Lemon Grove Del Taco Saturday night, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. The shooting happened just after 8:30 p.m. on the 7000 block of Broadway. Deputies were called to the restaurant after a man reported that a suspect pointed a gun at his family while they were inside the restaurant. When deputies arrived, the suspect pulled out a handgun before being shot by deputies. The man was taken to the hospital where he later died. According to the department, all three deputies fired their weapons. None of the deputies were injured. Far from the smooth, fast-paced rides of the Oscar darling Chezelle's previous work, including "Whiplash," "First Man" is a meticulous, visually stunning 360-degree look at the space race, honing in on Armstrong's personal perspective, as well as that of his dutiful yet understandably resentful wife, Janet Shearon (Claire Foy).  The upshot: To accomplish great things, great sacrifices must be made. This is no hagiography. Gosling's portrait of Armstrong is that of an often callous, unfeeling workaholic who often shunted off the affections of his family in favor of other needs -- sometimes work, other times petulant solitude. The same indifference distanced him from colleagues and superiors. Gosling's smoldering intensity is an unnervingly convincing a replication of Armstrong's demeanor.The movie soars when it lifts off the ground, allowing the talented visual effects team to flex their muscles and show off bar-raising shots of test pilots screaming at Mach 3, rocket launches piercing the stratosphere and especially in the climactic payoff, as man takes his small step and mankind his great leap.Chezelle sometimes loses grip on his narrative momentum as his story meanders among the numerous test missions, bureaucratic disputes and training missions Armstrong and his colleagues had to endure in order to reach toward the heights their collective obsession drove them toward.A ruthless edit could have trimmed away some of the ancillary material and reshaped "First Man" into a leaner, more economical story flow that would have been truer to the spirit of the journey rather than wallowing in documentarian style detail. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Many beach parking lots remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego say someone is making it even harder to find public street parking by illegally painting curbs red.Surfers who frequent La Jolla Shores noticed something was a little off."Me and my friend came here the other day… and we're like, 'What? What the heck?'" surfer, Maddie Sadlier laughed.They say the public parking on Camino Del Collado, a small street that runs parallel to La Jolla Shores Drive suddenly vanished."It's been like this for a really long time, up until recently, it just turned red," surfer Zach Rudy said.It turns out, the red curb on Camino Del Collado is fake and illegal."It's really a problem that somebody took it upon themselves to take away public parking right next to the beach," Kristin Brinner, a volunteer with the Surfrider Foundation San Diego, said.Some parts of the curb are only painted red on top, and there are several splotches of red on the road - clear signs that it was not a professionally painted curb. Brinner says this is the second summer in a row that this small street curb has been illegally painted."I do hope that people realize that this is more than just a simple bucket of paint," Brinner said. "It's vandalism, and it's preventing people from accessing the beach that belong to all of us. For someone to do this and say that 'No you can't access the beach near me,' is a really pretty hateful act, in my opinion."According to San Diego Police, painting a curb red is a misdemeanor crime of vandalism. If caught, a person can be cited or arrested.The Surfrider Foundation does not know who keeps doing this. But they say every summer, as the beach crowds increase, so does the problem."It does seem like it was somebody in this neighborhood that just was maybe sick of outsiders coming in, wanted to claim it as their own street," Rudy said.San Diego Parking Enforcement is aware of the vandalism on Camino Del Collado and is already in the process of getting it repainted. But Brinner says the best way to fix the problem quickly is to be aware."They should document their parking spots they often use, and then they will have proof so they can say 'Hey, this used to be here, and now it's not!' (KGTV) -- The Citizen Public Safety Oversight Task Force of La Mesa met Wednesday virtually, following two high-profile incidents involving the city's police department.The recently formed group is tasked with looking at whether La Mesa needs a police oversight committee and then decide what it will look like.The group's chair, Jamal McRae, realizes they are a temporary task force, but hopes it rolls over to become the permanent commission."We're still trying to educate ourselves as to what our committee will do, as far as, will be able to have subpoena power? Do we want subpoena power? We're still in the research phase." McRae said. "We're trying to determine whether we want to put this on a ballot to have individuals on the city vote on it, or if we wish the city council will just have the final say.McRae points out the idea for the task force came before the controversial incidents involving La Mesa police officers, and before the national calls for police reform following the death of George Floyd."We're a group of individual citizens that got together and wanted to make a change in the community after the Helix High School incident," McRae said. "So we have been running through some ideas for a few years, just among community members."McRae says the group understands the importance of their work and the urgency to complete their tasks. That's why they have scheduled three meetings next month. (KGTV) -- Authorities say a firefighter has been killed battling the largest record blaze in California history.State fire officials say the firefighter died Monday at the site of the Mendocino Complex fire north of San Francisco. More details have not yet been released.Six firefighters have now died in connection with a wave of massive wildfires that struck Northern California in the past weeks.The deadliest wildfire, the Carr Fire, has left a total of eight people dead, including three firefighters.Two firefighters have died fighting a fire near Yosemite National Park.The Mendocino Complex — actually twin fires being fought together — has burned for more than two weeks. The fire has burned nearly 150 homes and about 547 square miles of brush and forest. That's an area larger than the city of Los Angeles. 842
