CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A former employee of the Sweetwater Union High School District who siphoned more than ,000 from the district was sentenced Wednesday to a year of house arrest, three years of probation, and was ordered to repay the school district.Danya Margarita Williams of Chula Vista, 42, pleaded guilty in May to an embezzlement charge for taking money paid by prospective employees through job application fees.In addition to house arrest and probation, Williams was ordered to pay back ,988 to the school district. Another embezzlement count and a grand theft count were dismissed as part of the plea deal.As part of her job, Williams was responsible for processing money orders received for fingerprint background investigations at the district, which are required during employment screenings, according to Chula Vista Police Capt. Phil Collum.Each background investigation costs between to per applicant, and the applicants pay the fee using money orders, he said.``Instead of processing the money in accordance with district requirements, Williams deposited the money into her personal bank account,'' Collum said.District officials discovered the embezzlement -- which occurred between June 2016 and December 2017 -- and reported it to police, he said. CINCINNATI -- In a “bold move,” Kroger will phase out plastic bags and transition to reusable bags by 2025, according to CEO Rodney McMullen.The Cincinnati-based grocery chain announced the switch Thursday, saying the move “will better protect our planet for future generations."Kroger-owned QFC in Seattle will be the first to make the transition; plastic bags are expected to be eliminated there by 2019.Kroger Executive Vice President Mike Donnelly said the decision aligns with the company’s commitment to making a positive social impact.  "We listen very closely to our customers and our communities, and we agree with their growing concerns," Donnelly said in a news release. McMullen said the move to nix plastic correlates with the company’s “Zero Hunger | Zero Waste commitment” -- a goal to divert waste from landfills and donate food to hungry families.The grocery chain has also been redesigned milk jugs in an effort to use less plastic, CNN reported. (KGTV) - A Chula Vista mom says she was left holding the bag when her son's school wouldn't let her drop of her his lunch, which was needed for medical reasons.Adriana Escodbedo says the fruit, veggies, and turkey sandwich she packed for her 13-year-old son Danny on Thursday served a purpose. Early that morning, he was at the hospital getting an injection for a medical condition. Though he had some food afterward, his lunch period at Eastlake Middle School wasn't for another six hours."It's recommended they have something in their stomachs if they're getting injected with this medication," said Escobedo.RELATED: Parents concerned with short lunch times at San Diego Unified schoolsAfter Escobedo dropped him off at school, she discovered that Danny - for the first time ever - left his lunch in the car. Hours later, she went back to the school to drop it off and went to the main office."I let the two women in the office know that he took medication that day," said Escobedo.Escobedo say she wasn't allowed to drop off the lunch, but could set up an account in the cafeteria. Escobedo declined, as Danny has food sensitivities."As a mom, I just felt so frustrated. Are you kidding me? She checked her son out of the school, walked off campus, handed him the lunch, and then checked him back into the school.10News reached out to the Sweetwater Union High School District. A spokesperson says the policy is spelled out in the school handbook. The years-old policy came about because too many lunch drop-offs ended up sapping school resources and creating concerns about food spoilage. The district says there are exceptions - including medical reasons - but in this case, Escobedo didn't bring up the health issues, which she says is not true. She says staff should be trained to know the policy and any exceptions."As a mom you just want to do what's best for your child," said Escobedo.The district spokesperson tells 10News:"the front office staff will make an exception based on the situation and only on a limited basis ... the staff members who spoke with the parent said that they offered to call the student out of class so that they could give the student their lunch. The parent did not seem pleased with the responses she was being given and left. Had the parent asked for more clarification, or asked to speak with a school administrator, we could have very easily resolved this matter. Our staff also said that the parent made no mention of health/dietary issues, because again, this would have enabled staff to make an exception in this case.Nutrition is vital to student success which is why we offer a variety of options and all of them healthy and meet state nutritional guidelines. Even if a student does not have an active account, our school never deny a student a meal and the meals we provide would be the same as for a student with an active account ... If parents do have a medical/dietary concern, we ask that they let us know. A meeting with either the school nurse or one of our assistant principals establishes this and we can go forward in a positive way." 3297

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Things got heated Thursday at a protest in Chula Vista over a library's Drag Queen Story Time. Drag Queen Story Time, set to begin at the Otay Ranch Library September 10, inspired strong feelings on both sides of the aisle. Roughly two dozen residents against the event said they were concerned it would sexually influence children. "How dare anybody. We want to protect children. We want to protect our culture. That's not hate. that's love," said Arthur Schapper, a protester against the story time. "Adult entertainers as role models? What's next? Why not porn stars," he continued. As tensions mounted at Thursday’s protest, officers with the Chula Vista Police Department were forced twice to intervene. A speaker in opposition of the story time spoke at a podium as a crowd gathered, shouting “no justice, no peace.” As voices grew louder, a group of officers made their way through the crowd, separating the groups. "But they have not even stopped to talk to these performance, these people, these human beings who just happen to also be drag queens," said Kelly Hutton. Dennis Hodges, a pastor in Lemon Grove, came to the event to oppose Drag Queen Story Time, but said he regretted how tensions escalated. "I don't scream and holler at people. CHULA VISTA (CNS) - At least one man was injured in a traffic collision today on southbound Interstate 805 near East Palomar Street in Chula Vista, the California Highway Patrol said.At 11:10 a.m., a pickup truck flipped onto its side in a crash with a larger truck hauling boxes, according to a CHP incident log. The man was out of his pickup truck bleeding from a head wound.The larger truck continued southbound on I-805 after the crash, the CHP reported. The crash blocked two right lanes and traffic in the area was backed up, CHP officers on the scene said.No further information was immediately available. 620
