TOKYO, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Japanese Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Banri Kaieda met with visiting Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming in Tokyo Saturday and agreed the two countries will promote bilateral trade to assist Japan's recovery after the March 11 quake and tsunami.Chen, who accompanied Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao to Japan, told Kaieda that China will offer "as much cooperation as possible to help Japan's reconstruction" by providing necessary supplies.Kaieda said Japan will strive to restore production and supply chain disrupted by the disasters as soon as possible.The two sides said they will conduct various investment and trade activities to strengthen cooperation and personnel exchange, and facilitate the smooth flow of bilateral trade so as to promote sustainable development.The two ministers signed a document on expanding bilateral economic and trade cooperation. BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhuanet) -- Google Inc. is working with MasterCard Inc. and Citigroup Inc to develop a technology that could make mobile payments, according to media reports Monday.The new technology named "Nexus S Android" is embedded in Android mobile devices and allows customers to make purchases by waving their smartphones in front of a small reader at the checkout counter.Credit-card reader producer VeriFone Systems Inc, also involved in the new payment service, is developing contact-less devices that could allow people to pay with a wave or tap of credit card or a tap of smartphone.To use the service, holders of Citigroup-issued debit and credit cards must activate a mobile-payment application developed for one current model of Android phones. More models will be coming as the technology advances.Besides mobile payment, consumers would also be able to get targeted ads or discount offers, manage credit-card accounts and track spending through an application on their smartphones.Due to the deliberate design of the technology, customers have no need to worry about the security of their payment information. Nick Holland, a mobile-transactions analyst at Yankee Group, said the new technology is more sophisticated than credit cards with a magnetic stripe.With the coming service, Google is aiming to boost its advertising business by offering retailers more data about their customers and help them target ads and discount offers to mobile-device users near their stores.An insider told that Google was not expected to get a cut of the transaction fees.The service is expected to be released this year. KUNMING, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities said all earthquake victims had found shelter after nearly 9,000 tents were set up in the earthquake-hit Yingjiang County in southwest China.Altogether 53,000 people are being housed in large-sized tents erected in county plazas and village squares, said Jiang Zhaogang, spokesman with the rescue headquarters.Others moved in with friends, relatives, or makeshift houses for temporary accommodation, said Jiang.A 5.8-magnitude quake struck Yingjiang County in southwest China's Yunnan Province Thursday, leaving 25 dead and 314 injured. WASHINGTON, April 25 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) have agreed to expand their joint efforts to overcome international development challenges such as food security, climate change, and energy and environmental management.NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah signed a five-year memorandum of understanding on Monday, at NASA Headquarters. The agreement formalizes ongoing agency collaborations that use Earth science data to address developmental challenges, and to assist in disaster mitigation and humanitarian responses. The agreement also encourages NASA and USAID to apply geospatial technologies to solve development challenges affecting the United States and developing countries."Technologies for NASA missions have long improved life here on Earth. Together with USAID, we'll meet even more sustainable development challenges here on the ground, solving problems for the world community," Bolden said in a statement. "As we explore space, we'll also be exploring solutions to important health, nutritional and safety challenges in developing countries."The agencies will continue collaborations to stimulate innovative science and technology solutions to international development challenges by using Earth science data, research results, computer models, visualization applications and remote- sensing techniques.USAID is the lead federal development agency implementing U.S. development efforts through field-based programs and projects around the world.
