SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Rideshare drivers all over California are on strike protesting recent pay cuts by both Uber and Lyft. A small but vocal group of the drivers gathered at the San Diego airport Monday morning, opting to take part in a statewide protest against the companies they say are taking money out of their pockets. Recently, Uber announced it would be cutting drivers wage from 80 cents per mile to 60 cents. Workers say that’s on top of other cuts they’ve dealt with over the years. Drivers who spoke with 10News say other states like New York require companies to pay a minimum rate of more than per hour. Uber and Lyft both issued statements after the protest.Uber said in part, “…we're introducing a new Quest promotion feature, while also changing the per minute, per mile and minimum fare rates. These changes will make rates comparable to where they were in September."Lyft told 10News: "We are always open to conversations around how we can make Lyft better for drivers, but what we hear from the majority is that this is a flexible option that works for them." 1090

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County health officials announced Wednesday that three more people died from complications from the flu bringing the county's death toll this season to 49.The deceased were described as an 84-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman from San Diego, and a 50-year-old woman from East County, according to County of San Diego Communications Office spokesperson Jose A. Alvarez.All three had underlying medical conditions.“Influenza activity in the region is still elevated. People should continue taking precautions to avoid getting sick,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The flu vaccine is safe and effective.”This season's death toll is far lower than last season. 307 San Diegans died from complications from the flu through this time last year.The number of people with influenza-like symptoms who showed up at local emergency departments went up one percentage point last week, reaching 6 percent again.The flu claimed the county's first young victim Feb. 20. A 14-year-old girl became the first child to die from influenza this season in San Diego. The girl had an underlying health condition, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency. She had contracted influenza A, also known as H1N1, the county says, and had not received this season's flu vaccine.The majority of cases have been of the H1N1 virus, the county says, which typically affects younger and middle-aged adults because they have not been exposed as much as older adults.County health officials and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention strongly advise the annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older, especially demographics with a heightened risk of serious complications, such as pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with chronic conditions."Due to continued elevated influenza activity in the county, Wooten is extending—until April 30—the order for unvaccinated health care personnel to wear a mask while they’re in patient care areas. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Rallies were held in six different states in what organizers are calling "The March for Reparations to African people."Crowds gathered at the waterfront in downtown San Diego Saturday afternoon wearing masks with signs in hand.Among them was Wendy Craig, who is part of the UHURU Solidarity Movement, the group that organized the rally. Craig says they’re calling on people to do more acting and less talking. RELATED: California moves to consider reparations for slaveryShe says they are doing, "a call out to white people to say it’s not enough to say that you support Black power. You have to take a material stand of solidarity and turn over the stolen resources."Craig says many people that registered to participate in this event also raised money towards a collective reparations goal. She says there’s been an increase in involvement this year, which she believes is attributed to current events. "Four years ago when we organized a march for reparations we did not have a lot of success. But that was shifted through the George Floyd protests, and Breonna Taylor. That shift has brought a lot of unity to what we’re doing," Craig said.Collectively, this organization had set a goal of raising ,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego police officials have announced the arrest of two suspects in the murder of a security guard who was gunned down outside of an East Village homeless shelter last month.In a release sent Tuesday night, San Diego Police Department Acting Capt. Martha Sainz said homicide investigators were led to two suspects in the case through witness accounts and collected video footage from the area including from Smart Streetlights.The high-quality images obtained from the Smart Streetlights allowed investigators to identify 47-year-old Floyd Garrett and 40-year-old Johnny Hill as the suspects, according to Sainz."On January 4, 2020, investigators tracked Garrett to Phoenix, Arizona where he was arrested with the assistance of the Phoenix Police Department. Garrett will remain in custody in Phoenix, pending extradition hearings," said Sainz.Hill was located in San Diego and arrested by San Diego Police officers Tuesday without incident. He was booked into county jail for the murder.Both men are from San Diego, according to Sainz.Ernest Lee Buchanan, 44, was killed on Dec. 28 outside the Alpha Project shelter on Imperial Avenue. Buchanan was returning from taking a meal break when someone approached him and opened fire. Buchanan was taken to the hospital but died from his injuries a short time later. 1344
