MEXICO CITY (AP) — A powerful earthquake centered near the Mexican resort town of Huatulco has killed at least two people, officials said Tuesday. The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake had a magnitude of 7.4 and was centered along the Pacific coast of Oaxaca state. It hit at 11:29 a.m. ET at a depth of 16 miles and the epicenter was about 7 miles south-southwest of Santa Maria Zapotitlan, USGS says.Mexico’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said one person was killed and another injured in a building collapse in Huatulco. Otherwise he said reports were of minor damage such as broken windows and collapsed walls. Oaxaca state's governor reported a second death. The quake caused buildings in Mexico City to sway and sent thousands of residents into the city’s streets Tuesday. Seismic alarms sounded mid-morning with enough warning for residents to exit buildings.Helicopters flew over downtown Mexico City and police patrols sounded their sirens. 970

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- One former police officer has been charged in the Breonna Taylor case, but that doesn't mean it's the end of investigations.People across the country have been following the case of Taylor's death, and many wanted to see the officers involved face criminal charges. Demonstrations were held Wednesday night in Louisville and other cities after it was announced former Louisville Metro Police Department Detective Brett Hankison's charges of wanton endangerment are not directly related to Taylor's death. Additionally, two officers who fired shots the night Taylor was killed will not face criminal charges. They do still face another investigation, though. The Courier-Journal reports that the Louisville police department is conducting a Professional Standards Unit investigation to determine whether they and four other officers violated police policy or rules during the raid. The results of this internal review could lead to disciplinary action. Also, the FBI is conducting an investigation that could result in civil rights violations.Governor Andy Beshear is calling for the details of the state's investigation to be posted online by Attorney General Daniel Cameron."I trust Kentuckians. They deserve to see the facts for themselves, and I believe that the ability to process those facts helps everybody," said Beshear.Taylor's case is one of many that became a focus in the conversation about police reform. Attorney General Cameron says he'll form a task force to look at Kentucky's search warrants' policies. In Lexington, protesters have called to ban no-knock warrants, just like in Louisville. This story was originally published by Alex Valverde at WLEX. 1694
Many states allow local election clerks to verify mail-in ballots days or even weeks ahead of Election Day. That gives them a head start when tabulating the results on all ballots begins. But in some of the key presidential battleground states, clerks are prohibited from doing that or given very limited time to do so, slowing the count for what is expected to be a crush of mail-in ballots this year. Many worry that any delay in results could give President Donald Trump more room to continue his unfounded attacks on the electoral system. 550
Melania Trump is slamming Joe Biden, Democrats, and the media as she campaigns for her husband in Pennsylvania.WATCH RECAP:In her first solo appearance of the presidential campaign, Mrs. Trump says Democrats focused on a “sham impeachment” instead of the coronavirus pandemic. "The Democrats have decided to put their own agenda ahead of the American people's well-being," Melania said. "Instead, they attempt a divide, a divide on something that should not be non-partisan. A divide that causes confusion and fear instead of hope and security."She denounced what she called Biden’s “socialist agenda” and criticized media coverage of “idle gossip and palace intrigue.”Melania Trump also defended President Donald Trump’s record on COVID-19 even as he continues to downplay the threat of a virus that has killed more than 226,000 Americans."We all know the American spirit is stronger than this virus," the First Lady stated to the crowd in Pennsylvania. "We have proven that we can and will overcome this unexpected challenge."Her husband's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, said over the weekend that the U.S. is not going to be able to contain the virus. The first lady’s event 50 miles (80 kilometers) west of Philadelphia drew a couple of hundred supporters who piled into a converted barn typically used for wedding receptions. The overwhelming majority wore masks, but there was little social distancing.Mrs. Trump was diagnosed with the coronavirus earlier this month along with her husband, and she decided against attending a rally with the president last week because she was still feeling lingering symptoms. 1623
