The nation’s air traffic control system is losing controllers faster than it can hire people, according to the Air Traffic Controllers union.“If we don't have enough controllers to open all the positions and we have to combine up positions we have to reduce the capacity,” said Paul Rinaldi, the union’s president. He says the effects of not enough controllers have affected flights in the past."We have seen some situations last summer where we didn't have enough controllers at the facility where airlines did cancel flights," he said. "Right now we're at a 30-year low of certified controllers in a system."In 2017, 1,848 controllers left the job due to retirements, promotions or other reasons, according to the FAA’s Controller staffing report released this year. The FAA hired 1,880 people to be new controllers last year. That’s a gain of 32 controllers. But of the number hired, the FAA lost 735 people who did not pass the required training academy.Only 1,145 passed, far fewer than the number of controllers who left the job last year."We'll keep trying to keep up with attrition and we haven't been able to do that," Rinaldi said.He says if the problem isn’t addressed differently than it currently is, we can expect to be inconvenienced in the future when we fly."You will have some delays on the ground maybe even holding in the air depending on what the staffing looks at looks like at that facility," Rinaldi said. 1435

The Padres 0 million signing of All-Star infielder Manny Machado is bringing new hope for both longtime fans and businesses trying to survive near Petco Park. 'We got a big name star," said lifelong Padres fan Luke Peet. "We got a household name that's on our ballpark."News of Machado's signing broke Tuesday morning. Fans like Ernesto Ramirez came to Petco Park to buy tickets for opening day shortly after the box office opened. "Friends are excited," he said. "It's all over social media so I think it's going to be a big deal for the Padres this season."If the excitement over the Padres translates into more fans coming into the Petco Park gates, it could also help businesses in the East Village stay afloat. That's been a challenge these last few years in the high-rent area. There are vacant restaurants just steps from the ballpark's entrance. The Padres finishing in last place two of the last three seasons has also led to a dropoff in foot traffic. The team averaged nearly 27,000 fans per game in 2018, good for 18th in Major League Baseball, according to ESPN. "As the year goes on and they struggle, you definitely see a slowdown in the crowd and energy," said Erik Tesmer, a co-owner and manager of Basic Pizza, which has been in the East Village for 14 years. The Machado signing was already paying off for Basic. Tesmer said the Padres ordered 17 pies for delivery Tuesday because there was no time to go out for lunch. "The energy of a big name person - we've had them in the past over the years and you can definitely tell the difference," Tesmer said. Whether the difference lasts beyonds April and May will all depend on how the Padres perform on the field. 1692

The number of people sick from an outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness, called cyclosporiasis, linked to McDonald's salads is now 507, federal health officials said Thursday. All of the illnesses have been confirmed with lab tests. Twenty-four of those individuals have been hospitalized. The illnesses began between May 20 and July 21, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Illnesses have been reported in 16 states. The states are Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, Wisconsin and New York. The patients in Connecticut, New York, Tennessee and Virginia all purchased their salads while they were visiting Illinois and the Florida patient purchased the suspect salad while in Kentucky, according to the CDC."Epidemiologic evidence indicates that salads purchased from McDonald's restaurants are one likely source of these infections. The investigation is ongoing, and FDA is working to determine the sources of the ingredients that were in common to the salads served at McDonald's," the CDC said. The cyclospora parasite causes intestinal illness in people who consume contaminated food or water. Symptoms can begin a week or more after consuming the parasite. They include diarrhea and frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements, according to the CDC. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue. Vomiting, headache, fever, body aches and flu-like symptoms can also occur. The illness can last from a few days to a few months, and patients might feel better but then get worse again. Patients can be treated with antibiotics. In July, McDonald's pulled the suspected salad mix from approximately 3,000 locations and switched its supplier.Subsequently, the outbreak investigation found the parasite in a sample of Fresh Express salad mix of romaine lettuce and carrots that had been distributed by the restaurant chain. On July 27, Fresh Express issued a recall for some lettuce that had been supplied to wholesale and institutional customers. 2167

The New England Journal of Medicine is one of the most popular medical journals in the world, where researchers go to share trials and information on data and science. But on Wednesday, the journal entered the world of politics. In an unusual and highly unprecedented fashion, the New England Journal of Medicine wrote a scathing rebuke of US leaders’ response to the coronavirus pandemic. While not formally offering any sort of endorsement, the journal referenced the upcoming election in its editorial. The piece did not name President Donald Trump or opponent Joe Biden by name.“Anyone else who recklessly squandered lives and money in this way would be suffering legal consequences,” the journal wrote. “Our leaders have largely claimed immunity for their actions. But this election gives us the power to render judgment. Reasonable people will certainly disagree about the many political positions taken by candidates. But truth is neither liberal nor conservative. When it comes to the response to the largest public health crisis of our time, our current political leaders have demonstrated that they are dangerously incompetent."The editorial, titled “Dying in a Leadership Vacuum,” comes just 27 days before the US election. While much of the world has been able to keep coronavirus deaths to a minimum in recent months, the US still has one of the highest death rates in the world from the virus related to the coronavirus. The United States continues to average 800 deaths per day from the coronavirus, according to Johns Hopkins University data. Only India has been averaging more deaths per day than the US in recent weeks, and India’s population is nearly quadruple America’s population. While many European nations saw a reprieve from the despair of the coronavirus over the summer, counties such as France and the United Kingdom are seeing cases jump in recent weeks, although their death counts still pale in comparison to the United States. The New England Journal of Medicine said that the US had every advantage going into the pandemic to combat the disease.“The United States came into this crisis with enormous advantages,” the journal’s editors wrote. “Along with tremendous manufacturing capacity, we have a biomedical research system that is the envy of the world. We have enormous expertise in public health, health policy, and basic biology and have consistently been able to turn that expertise into new therapies and preventive measures. And much of that national expertise resides in government institutions. Yet our leaders have largely chosen to ignore and even denigrate experts.”To read the full editorial, click here. 2657

The long-running tv series “COPS” is filming again, however viewers in the US may not get to see the episodes.Last week, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said two “COPS” film crews were riding with their deputies in September and will be with them through the first week of November.“We have a longstanding relationship with COPS and Langley productions, and we are pleased they have decided to return, highlighting the outstanding work our Deputies provide to all of you,” the statement from the sheriff’s office said.“They show the hard work and professionalism of law enforcement, despite what some anti-law enforcement activists and those in the media want you to believe,” Sheriff’s Ozzie D. Knezovich is quoted as saying in the release about “COPS”.The show was canceled on Paramount Network in early June, as demonstrations focused on police tactics and violence against Black people grew in several cities following the deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd, among others.“Cops’ is not on the Paramount Network and we don’t have any current or future plans for it to return,” a Paramount Network spokesperson said in a statement to Variety in June. The new episodes being filmed in Spokane are likely destined for foreign markets. A spokesperson from Langley Productions told The Hollywood Reporter that the episodes being filmed now are to fulfill commitments in international territories where “COPS” still airs. There is no update on the “COPS” website or social media channels.“COPS” began its run on the fledgling FOX network in 1989, being a huge boon for the young network. The program was unique for embedding cameras within police departments, showing the work of officers throughout the US.But FOX dropped the program amid declining ratings, and was later picked up by Spike, which was later renamed Paramount Network. 1864
