SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University is defending its coronavirus-related disciplinary protocols after angry parents criticized them. The family of a student tells ABC 10News that she may be suspended for an entire semester for not reporting her COVID-19 test result fast enough.Marc Peterson says that his daughter is a sophomore. He asked that ABC 10News not show her face or use her name out of fear of retribution. He says that she lives in a single room in the dorms. When she fell ill, he says that she visited the County’s testing site on-campus, which is where she reportedly tested positive. Peterson says that she waited four days to notify the housing authority, instead of doing it immediately.“She thought [that] she didn't have to because the test was done on-campus. She thought it was being reported to the school,” he told ABC 10News on Monday and added, “The documentation that she had signed for housing said that she should report results or contact with other students ‘immediately' and ‘immediately' is not defined in any of the paperwork.”He says that she self-quarantined but still got in trouble. Peterson shared a letter that he says the school sent her which outlined options of taking an academic suspension for the spring semester or taking an academic suspension for this current semester. “It means that all the work that you've done all this semester will be wiped out. You're giving up this entire semester,” he explained.He says that he’s part of a Facebook group where dozens of other SDSU parents are posting about similar disciplinary actions for, what he calls, minor offenses during a rapidly changing pandemic. “It seems like the school is very overhandedly punishing students in this environment,” he added.Peterson says that his daughter plans to fight the possibility of suspension with the school.SDSU sent the following information to ABC 10News."We cannot provide specific information relating to specific cases or students’ academic records due to Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo Global is stepping up efforts to protect the koala population as hundreds of massive wildfires scorch Australia.The organization said Wednesday it's committing resources to ensure the koala population is recovered. San Diego Zoo Global-backed researchers are preparing to journey to the Blue Mountains region of Australia to look for koalas and provide recovery assistance.Koala's in the Blue Mountain region of the country are the most genetically diverse koalas in the world, according to San Diego Zoo Global.RELATED: UCSD Health, San Diego Zoo Safari Park team up to save gorilla's eyesight"We have been working in this area for many years now, tracking koalas to learn about them and to assess their population numbers," said Kellie Leigh, researcher with San Diego Zoo Global. "The population of koalas in the Blue Mountains have high levels of genetic diversity. This makes this particular population very important for the survival of the species."Researchers utilize a special radio-tagging technique to track koalas in the tall trees and rugged terrain of the region. Thanks to that tracking, they were able to locate 12 koalas threatened by the wildfires and relocate them to Australia's Taronga Zoo.As researchers prepare to head back into the region, they say the devastation will require them to plan for immediate relief and long-term sustainability for the threatened population.RELATED: Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfires"These fires are completely changing how wildlife management will be carried out in future in Australia," Leigh said. It's events like this that may well hasten the extinction process for a range of other species. So, it's a very sad time," Chris Dickman, a professor at the University of Sydney, says. "What we're seeing are the effects of climate change. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some local Uber customers got a major case of sticker shock when they see just how much they were being charged for their rides.On Wednesday afternoon, Kelley Rowe and two others were trying to get from the airport to the convention center to get her Comic-Con badges. Rowe, who flew in from Wisconsin, clicked and approved an Uber ride for .08. Not long after, she got an alarming message. "I got a text from my credit card company asking if it was fraud. Uber tried to charge ,308 to my credit car," said Rowe.The pending charge on her credit card was 100 times the actual cost. "It was huge sticker shock. I'm sure I swore immediately," said Rowe.Her bank put a hold on the charge and the ride never happened. Her credit card was now suspended during a week she needed to use it. "I'm very lucky I had credit card attached and not a debit card," said Rowe. Others may not have been so lucky. Some customers tweeted the ride drained their accounts. According to the Washington Post, an unknown amount of riders in San Diego and Washington D.C. experienced what Uber calls a glitch from a 'known' issue.Uber called it a system error in a message sent to Rowe. The company saying the overcharges will be reversed, but Rowe says needs to be more forthcoming and apologize. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Seven people were hospitalized Tuesday after two multi-vehicle crashes on Interstate 5 in the Torrey Pines area.The crashes were reported on southbound I-5 near State route 56 just before 1 p.m. Two car crashes — one four-car crash and one three-car crash — occurred in the area, forcing a complete shut down of I-5 for about an hour, according to California Highway Patrol officer Jim Bettencourt.At one point, the CHP's incident log listed as many as a dozen vehicles possibly involved in the crash. The two crashes caused a traffic backup extending to Loma Santa Fe Dr. in Solana Beach.Seven people were taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital with moderate injuries, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Mónica Mu?oz.The cause of the crashes was not immediately known. 805

These practices help students deal with their emotions and understand their behaviors.Kids take a few minutes a day to express how they feel and address different topics like who they trust and why.
