SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego County leaders Monday announced proposals that would crack down on vaping amid vaping-related illness and death throughout the U.S. At the Monday news conference, County Supervisors Dianne Jacob and Nathan Fletcher proposed a ban on the sale and distribution of flavored tobacco products and e-cigarettes. The recommendations will come to go to the board on October 15 and, if the board follows up with approval, the rules would take effect in the county’s unincorporated area. “Vaping-related illnesses are a grave concern and we must take local action to address this fast-growing public health crisis,” said Jacob, chairwoman of the Board of Supervisors.“Teenagers and young adults have been the hardest hit, and we must stand up to vaping manufacturers that are preying on them for profit.”So far across the U.S., there have been more than 800 confirmed illnesses tied to vaping and 13 deaths. The news conference comes after health officials around the country advise people to refrain from vaping as investigations into the cause of the illnesses and deaths continue. “E-cigarettes, and in particular the flavored products, are erasing years of progress in reducing teens’ use of tobacco and nicotine,” said Supervisor Fletcher.In San Diego County, there have been 22 confirmed probable vaping-related illness cases. Teenagers and young adults make up about half of those hospitalized as a result of e-cigarette use, according to the state Department of Public Health. 1513

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Restaurants are feeling backed into a corner after the pandemic forced them to add outdoor seating and Saturday brought cold rain and high winds.As the clouds rolled in, businesses across San Diego braced for impact."We were planning on covering everything up but we were kind of waiting and seeing just how big the storm was going to be," Whiskey Girl Manager Jake Southworth said.In the Gaslamp, he says they've been lucky this weekend, "We were ready to go with more of the tarps, to put out but waited till midnight when we were closed anyway, so definitely dodged a bullet there and today again it looks like it's going to hold off until later so I feel like we're still going to be doing good."Whiskey Girl is on a section of Fifth Avenue that shuts down to vehicle traffic Thursday through Saturday, allowing restaurants to spill into the street and seat more customers.The extra chairs help them stay afloat, but outside the rain and future winter weather are putting a damper on their options.Some businesses put up pop-up shades and umbrellas to provide some shelter against the weather."I mean it does open a lot more seating having outside but we'll see what the weather sends us," Southworth said.Every restaurant is also holding its breath, waiting to see if the county drops into the purple most restrictive tier next week, which would mean no indoor dining at all."How can I ask someone to spend, you know - on a drink if they're sitting outside shivering and the rain's coming through?" SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Fire-Rescue unveiled two new tools Wednesday that will help their dive team be faster and more efficient. "They move about 5 times faster than a diver can swim," Sergeant Rob Brown, with the SDFD Dive Team, said. The first hour during a search is crucial, he added. It could mean the difference between life or death. According to the website, DiveX, the scooters can go up to 600 feet underwater and can drive about 3 miles-per-hour. "It reduces our air consumption, allows us to stay under longer, as well as reduce diver fatigue, so we can get more reps in while we're conducting searches," Brown said.The team's had scooters since the 1990's but the new Piranhas are three generations ahead of what the team's been using, according to Brown.The need became apparent in August of 2018, when a 12-year-old girl fell off a boat in the San Vicente Reservoir. Her body was found days later.The team's request was answered by the San Diego Fire-Rescue Foundation. They donated two scooters to the team, costing about ,000 each."We cannot say enough how grateful we are for the support of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Foundation in getting this equipment to us," Brown said. The foundation is accepting donations to afford four more scooters here.Brown said the scooters are lightweight and they can buy the batteries at Home Depot, saying they're the same as those power tools use. 1415
