ISLAMABAD, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Saturday wished China and the Chinese people a lucky traditional new year, hoping the bilateral relations between Pakistan and China will be further strengthened.In an interview with Xinhua, the prime minister said the friendship between the two countries is time-tested and long- standing, and the cooperations are multi-dimensional."Our friendship is now entering into many years and I wish this new year will add more strength to our relation," Gilani said.The prime minister said Pakistan and China have been cooperating in economy, defense, agriculture, culture, education and many other fields, including infrastructure and energy sector as well.He said Pakistan wants to have more exchange of culture, youth, parliamentary delegation, and more people-to-people contact between the two countries."The governments may come and go, but the love and affection between the two countries will remain forever," said the prime minister.Referring to China's role in international summits, Gilani said China plays an extremely important role in the world economy. He said Pakistan supports China on all international forums, on climate change, on inter-parliamentary unions and on Asia-Europe cooperation.In the global economic recession, Gilani said he appreciates what China has done to stabilize the economy and to help other troubled economies. He said Pakistan is grateful for China's timely assistance."China is performing really well and we wish them good luck in the coming new year," said Gilani, adding that he has been impressed by the tremendous development in China and the Chinese students who can speak fluent Urdu, the national language of Pakistan.Talking about the forthcoming Shanghai World Expo, the prime minister said it is a great opportunity for China to showcase its development, culture, tradition, history and local products and a good chance for Pakistan and China to better mutual understanding.As to the recent London summit on Afghanistan, Gilani said Pakistan wants to maintain good relations with the neighboring country and it will focus on the fight against extremism and terrorism to help bring in the stability of Afghanistan.Expressing his passion for architecture and gardening, the prime minister said he would have become an interior designer or an architect if he is not a politician.

YINCHUAN, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao has called for more efforts to promote social, economic development in the underdeveloped western areas of the country.Hu made the call during his three-day visit to northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region from Sunday to Tuesday.This year marks the tenth anniversary of China's campaign to develop the west.Hu said the past decade witnessed a good beginning of and laid a solid foundation for the "West Development" drive and the next decade would be a crucial period for pushing forward the campaign. Chinese President Hu Jintao (R) visits Shizuishan City, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. Hu Jintao called for more efforts to promote social, economic development in the underdeveloped western areas of the country during his three-day visit to northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region from March 21 to 23To develop the west would remain one of the priorities in the 12th five-year plan starting 2011, during which the central government would provide more favorable policies and greater funds to western areas, Hu said.He called for transforming the economic growth pattern, and improving people's livelihood, as he visited local factories, farms, renovated shanty-towns and new villages housing farmers that had migrated to from virtually uninhabitable areas.In his visit to a successful company which manufactures rare metal products, Hu said the central government attached strategic importance to developing the new material industry. He called on companies to innovate technology, produce new products and implement new management practices.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has reiterated his country's support for the Copenhagen Accord and China's commitments to addressing climate change.In separate replies to letters from Danish Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Wen said the Copenhagen Accord resulting from the UN climate change conference in the Danish capital last year laid the foundation for advancing international cooperation on climate change and pointed the direction for future negotiations.The document reflected the political will of all parties to actively tackle climate change, upheld the dual-track negotiating mechanism of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and its Kyoto Protocol, and reaffirmed the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities" for developed and developing countries, Wen wrote in the letters dated Friday.He said China would do its best to honor its commitments on climate change, including a reduction of carbon dioxide emission intensity per unit of GDP by 40 to 45 percent by 2020 against 2005 levels, an increase to 15 percent of non-fossil fuels in the country's total primary energy mix by 2020, and an increase of 40 million hectares of forest and 1.3 billion cubic meters of forest volume by 2020 from 2005 levels.Wen said China will continue to play an active and constructive role and work jointly with the international community for a meaningful conclusion of the Bali Roadmap negotiations at the Mexico climate talks with a comprehensive, effective and binding outcome that will reinforce the implementation of the convention and the protocol.

  

BEIJING, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- The number of railway passengers rebounded sharply in China on Tuesday as more people started their return trips after Spring Festival family reunions, the Ministry of Railways said Wednesday.Passengers wait to take their trains inside a makeshift waiting room at a railway station in Nanchang, capital of east China's Jiangxi Province, Feb. 17, 2010. The railway station of Nanchang met its transport peak on Wednesday as large numbers of returning tourists went by trains here.Statistics from the ministry show China's railways served 4.185 million passengers on Tuesday, up 689,000 or 9.8 percent from the previous day.To cope with the increased demand for seats, the ministry added 238 special trains to ease the traffic, of which 64 were long-distance trains.People wait for their buses at a long-distance bus station in Jinan, capital of east China's Shandong Province, Feb. 17, 2010. Jinan met its medium and short-distance Spring Festival travel peak on Wednesday with most of the travelers going by long-distance buses to visit their relatives.The ministry predicts the travel peak days will probably be Feb. 19 and 20, as more and more passengers start their return trip. The ministry said it is closely watching the passenger flow situation and will adopt appropriate measures to meet passenger demand.Meanwhile, statistics from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) show that on Tuesday the country's roadways carried 28.1 million passengers, increasing 1.8 million or 12.6 percent from the previous day, while from Feb. 13 to 16 the combined figure was 127 million, up 10.8 percent from the same period last year.The MOT said that the country's roadways carried a total number of 32.5 million passengers on Wednesday, up 9.7 percent year on year.Wednesday MOT figures revealed that China's waterways were forecast to carry 780,000 passengers, down 2.5 percent year on year.The country's roadways were already ready for more passengers' long-distance return trip, as the one-week Spring Festival holiday was near its end, said He Jianzhong, a spokesman with the MOT.The Spring Festival, also known as the Chinese Lunar New Year, is China's most important annual festival. It is an occasion for reunions of family members, relatives and friends.
