The Environmental Protection Agency confirmed Monday the content of internal EPA emails that appear to contradict EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt's claim he didn't know about or authorize big pay raises for two close aides.However, an EPA spokeswoman said there was no evidence in the emails that Pruitt knew about the pay raises.The Atlantic reported last Monday that Pruitt requested pay raises for "two of his closest aides," in March, a request the White House declined, according to a source with knowledge of the discussion. EPA then used an obscure provision to give the staffers, Sarah Greenwalt and Millan Hupp, the raises.On Wednesday, Pruitt told Fox News, "I did not know that they got the pay raises until (Tuesday)."The EPA spokeswoman confirmed to CNN an email exchange, also first reported by The Atlantic, between Greenwalt and the human resources department at the EPA. She previously worked with Pruitt in the Oklahoma attorney general's office.In one of the emails, EPA's human resources department tells Greenwalt that it processed her title change. When Greenwalt asks what her salary increase was, the department told her there was no increase in her salary. Greenwalt responded that the administrator indicated she should have one, referring to a salary increase."There's no way to prove what she said is true; a lot of people say the administrator said this or that," said the EPA spokeswoman, who reached out to CNN to explain the emails.The spokeswoman confirmed she saw the emails and confirmed the content of the emails. No specific dollar amount for the raise was mentioned in the email exchange, according to the spokeswoman."While she may claim that the administrator knows about her raise, there is no email proof that I've seen, or communications or documents from Scott Pruitt to HR or to (Greenwalt) about that particular raise," the spokeswoman said.On Monday, EPA chief of staff Ryan Jackson said in a statement to The Atlantic that he is taking responsibility for the raises and that Pruitt "had zero knowledge of the amount of the raises, nor the process by which they transpired."The EPA spokeswoman confirmed the existence of a second email from the liaison between the White House and EPA to the agency's human resources department expressing concerns from the White House about such significant raises, but noting that the administrator had indicated to move forward with it.In an effort to explain that email, the spokeswoman said despite the content of the second email, what that person really meant was "the administrator's office," not the administrator himself, decided to go ahead with the raises.Pruitt has come under increasing fire in recent weeks as reports steadily uncover extensive spending on travel and other potentially major ethical lapses, including an agreement to rent a room in Washington for only a night from a lobbyist couple whose firm lobbies the EPA.President Donald Trump said last Thursday he still had confidence in Pruitt.  3015

The director of the Census Bureau says irregularities have been found during the numbers-crunching phase of the 2020 census. Thursday's announcement makes it less likely the statistical agency can meet a year-end deadline for handing in numbers used for divvying up congressional seats. The Census Bureau already was facing a shortened schedule of two and a half months for processing the data collected during the 2020 census — about half the time originally planned. “These types of processing anomalies have occurred in past censuses,” Census Bureau director Steven Dillingham said in a statement. “I am directing the Census Bureau to utilize all resources available to resolve this as expeditiously as possible. As it has been all along, our goal remains an accurate and statistically sound Census.”The Census Bureau wouldn’t say Thursday what the anomalies were or publicly state a new deadline for the apportionment numbers.Missing the Dec. 31 deadline for turning in the apportionment numbers would be a blow to President Donald Trump’s efforts to exclude people in the country illegally from being counted in the numbers used to determine how many congressional seats each state gets and how .5 trillion in federal spending is distributed.Once the president receives the numbers by the Dec. 31 deadline, the president has about a week or so from the start of the next Congress to transmit them to the House. If the Census Bureau delays turning in the apportionment numbers because of the processing problems, that transfer of the numbers could take place after President-elect Joe Biden takes office.Trump’s apportionment order has been found unlawful by three courts — in New York, California and Maryland. The Department of Justice on Monday filed complaints against 11 individuals believed to be members of the?Central American migrant caravan, accusing them of illegally entering the United States.After a month-long journey by bus, train and on foot, about 100 migrants arrived at the San Ysidro port of entry on the US-Mexico border on Sunday evening, preparing to claim asylum. About 20 to 30 migrants spent the night inside an immigration processing center in Tijuana, Mexico.An organizer of the caravan vowed they would remain at the immigration processing center until "every last one" is admitted into the United States.Two Salvadorans, six Hondurans, and three Guatemalans face charges, a federal law enforcement official told CNN.Ten of them face a misdemeanor charge for allegedly entering the US illegally. Another individual is alleged to have entered the country after they were previously deported, and faces a felony charge.The probable cause statement alleges many of those charged were seen in an area known as Goat Canyon, about 4 miles to the west of the San Ysidro port of entry, on the US side of the border, the official said. Others were seen on the US side of the border about 2 miles west of San Ysidro in an area known as "W-8." 1263

The death toll from the ongoing Camp Fire near Paradise, California continues to grow as authorities found another eight bodies, increasing the number of confirmed dead to 58. The Camp Fire is the largest single wildfire in California history, now doubling the death toll of second-deadliest fire in California history. The number of confirmed destroyed structures also has increased to more than 10,000. The death toll could continue to rise as the Butte County Sheriff's Office said that nearly 100 people remain missing. Most of the missing are elderly residents of Paradise.  One bit of good news is that officials are starting to get the fire under containment. The Camp Fire scorched 138,000 acres and is now 35 percent contained. Meanwhile, authorities continue to battle a massive blaze in Southern California. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is cracking down on glasses and contact prescribers who may try to stop you from shopping around.The FTC sent warning letters to almost 30 different eyeglass prescribers. The letters say the prescriber must give a copy of the prescription to the patient without them asking.They can't charge a special fee for doing that and they can’t force you to buy from them just because they did the examination.“However, there were a lot of prescribers that just weren't doing that,” said Linda Sherry, Director of National Priorities at Consumer Action. “If you asked for it, in most cases, you would get it. They also are required to post notices in the offices to say that you have a right to your prescription and a lot of prescribers we're not posting those notices.”Consumer Action is educating people on their eyeglass and contacts prescription rights. Sherry says prescriptions allow you to go online and to other eyeglass and contact sellers to shop for the best deal.Another thing she says to ask for, especially if you're shopping online, is pupil distance. It may not be on the prescription.“I had an experience where I asked for the pupil distance and was told that would be to put the pupil distance on, so I was like, ‘I've been coming here for three years and you've obviously measured my pupil distance, because I bought glasses from you. So, all you have to do is open your records and tell me my pupil distance.’ And they did do it, but there was that moment there when she said for the pupil distance measurement when I thought, ‘oh, something's very, very wrong here.’”Prescribers shouldn't be charging for that info either.If you're having trouble getting prescription information from your provider, you can contact the FTC.
