SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With the rainy season ahead, the City of San Diego is offering ways for residents to save money on their water bills by removing lawns and installing rain barrels. The City is offering .25 per square foot for lawns that are converted to turf that can capture rainfall for reuse. Homeowners that convert their lawn into drought resistant landscape can apply for financial rebates.Customers may receive  per gallon of barrel storage capacity for residential rainwater collecting up to 400 gallons or 0 per property. Rain barrels are a great way to conserve water and reuse for irrigation purposes as well as preventing pollution, according to city officials. Applications are available for Rainwater Harvest, to apply click here. For more information on the types of rebates and water conservation tips visit the City's website. 949

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Hospitalizations related to COVID-19 continue to increase across San Diego County.The county’s latest numbers show 458 patients hospitalized, while 178 are in the Intensive Care Unit.“It is not quite what we’re seeing in Florida and Houston, but we are seeing an increase for sure,” said Dr. Julie Phillips, the medical director of Sharp Grossmont’s Emergency Department.“Almost every ER in the county has their tents set up, and they never took them down despite us not needing to utilize it for a number of weeks, if not even about six weeks, then starting last week it is back in use,” said Phillips.Currently, Sharp Grossmont has 27 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, while Sharp Chula Vista has 44, and Sharp Memorial has 29.Phillips said most local hospitals are well equipped to handle the surge.“All of us have staffed up beds by 150 percent awaiting for this,” she explained. “We know a lot more; we feel better about knowing how it’s transmitted, we feel better about our PPE, especially our N95 masks. Flattening the curve gave us time to get what we needed ready to go, so now we’re ready.”On Friday, Scripps Health reached a single-day all-time high number of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.At its five locations, a total of 126 people were hospitalized. Earlier that week, the number was still in the 90s.Both Scripps Mercy in San Diego and Chula Vista had 38 patients hospitalized at each facility.The numbers were the highest for a single day since the pandemic began.Infectious disease specialist for UCSD Health, Dr. David Pride, tells 10News UCSD’s hospital system is also seeing an increase.“Going back to early June, we admit between 1 and 6 new patients per day. The rolling average is a bit higher the last couple of weeks,” said Pride via email. “We are operating near our capacity, but largely because we accept outside hospital transfers readily who need a higher level of care than their hospitals can provide. We still maintain surge capabilities, so we could admit many more patients should the situation get more dire.”A spokesperson for Palomar Health said they had seen an increase in patients in the last couple of weeks, but still have plenty of capacity.Kaiser Permanente has also seen a recent rise in COVID-19 related hospitalizations.The following statement was sent to 10News.“Consistent with other San Diego County hospitals, Kaiser Permanente has seen a recent rise in COVID-19-related hospitalizations. Most notably, we are seeing an increase in a younger, less acute population. (KGTV) - An East County woman was devastated to find out the money she spent to buy a new cat likely went to con artists.“I just felt like I lost my sense of love for humanity,” Suzi Moon told Team 10. Moon’s Maine Coon cat, Teka, recently passed away. She was 15-years-old and a longtime member of her family.“He was the best cat ever,” Moon said. When he died, she was heartbroken.“I was in an emotional mode,” Moon said. “I wanted to get another one because I just was so used to that cat.”Moon searched online and found a website that advertised pure Maine Coone cats. She emailed the website and got a response. “They emailed me back and this cat that I saw on the website was a gray cat. Beautiful,” she said.She also spoke to someone on the phone, who sounded legitimate. The man asked her questions, such as whether or not she was having the cat indoors and if she was declawing the cat. Moon eventually scraped up 0 and sent the money through Zelle, something she now regrets.The day the supposed seller was supposed to ship the cat to her, he asked for more money for a special crate. “We need to have you cash app, send ,000 more,” Moon said. After back and forth with the seller and refusing to pay more, Moon said they eventually blocked her number. The 0 she paid was gone. The website, puremainecoons.com, is no longer active. Team 10 found the website on petscams.com, a site that bills itself as a pet watchdog website. The Better Business Bureau said pets are the top scam when it comes to online purchases. The average loss is 0. Moon wanted to share her mistake with others in hopes nobody else falls victim to this scam.“I just felt violated. There [are] people out there taking advantage like that. It’s disgusting,” Moon said.Team 10 called the person Moon said she spoke with about the cat. That man hung up before answering any questions. The BBB suggests do not buy a pet without seeing it in person. The organization also recommends conducting an internet search of the photo. If you see the same picture on different websites, it could be fraud. 2112

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)-- Many Californians have not stepped out of their homes since Thursday after Governor Gavin Newsom issued the State-wide Stay-at-home order. But some are beginning to head outdoors, just with many precautions. Just a few days into the Governor's Stay-at-home order, many San Diegans are already getting cabin fever."With our gyms closed, we got to get exercise somehow," Joann Carcioppolo said. With no access to their weights and machines, Carcioppolo and her friend Janice Meyers decided to take a stroll around Pacific Beach. Of course, keeping in mind, Rule #1. "Doing our social distancing!" Meyers laughed. Families also took to the outdoors, hiking and hitting the parks. Instead of having their children clued to their devices, the Marcussen's spent the day at Calavera Hills Community Park in Carlsbad. Mother, Candice, said today, her children's playtime had a little bit of a modification. "We're not letting them play on the playground," Marcussen said. "They brought their own toys down to make sure that we stay healthy and clean."Now that kids do not have school, and parents are working from home, things can get mundane. But many said they are trying to stay positive during this global pandemic. "Were are just trying to be kind grateful for this extra time together that we wouldn't normally have had.
