SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Babies were sick, hospitals crowded, consumers puzzled, senior officials sacked, farmers could not sell their milk, dairy firm employees had fears for future -- milk scandal affected the life of many Chinese but they were struggling through it.     Ten-month-old Wang Tianhao left hospital after six days of treatment. His mother relieved from scary and worry.     "I was so scared that I couldn't help crying on the first day he was taken into hospital," said the mother Jiang Aihua. The boy had drunk powdered milk containing banned chemical melamine made by Sanlu Group since he was born. Doctors found a stone of about 5mm in diameter in his kidney.     "He is getting better," said Lou Yan, a doctor in charge. "It will take some time to wash the stone out of his body. But he does not need to take any more drugs, just needs to drink a lot of water." She asked Jiang to take her son back home and have an examination next month.     In northern Hebei Province, center of the scandal, about 480 infant patients recovered and left for home by Monday noon while around 1,200 were still in hospital for observation. 　　REBUILDING TRUST     Another mother named Wang Lifang was at a loss on what to feed her baby daughter.     Besides Sanlu, 22 other dairy firms were also found to produced tainted milk power later, including several domestic dairy giants.     Some mothers turned to foreign brands for they lost trust on domestic firms. But Wang could not afford it with an annual family income of around 6,000 yuan (882 U.S. dollars). The price of foreign-made baby formula is three to four times of that for domestic products.     Parents tried many substitutes such as fresh milk, soy milk or even rice soup for their babies. Some even stopped feeding any food with milk for their children.     "I don't know what to do. I hope the government can give us a list of safe milk," she said.     To set up trust among customers, many dairy firms involved in the scandal jointly signed a statement promising to produce safe milk and never let this happen again. Police arrested four suspects and had other 22 in custody while Tian Wenhua, former board chairwoman and general manager of Sanlu, was arrested as well.     Several senior officials were dismissed from their posts including Wu Xianguo, the Communist Party chief of Shijiazhuang City, where Sanlu was based. On Monday, China's chief quality supervisor Li Changjiang resigned over milk scandal.     SEARCHING BUYERS FOR SPLIT MILK     On the wall of a milk station at Nantongye village, a slogan read, "Want to become rich? Raise fewer kids but more cows."     But villager Li Jufeng was planning to sell all the 13 cows his father raised.     "My dad was hit in a traffic accident two days ago. We need money to pay for his medical cost," said the 32-year-old. "If we keep the cattle, we can sell the milk to nobody and we have to feed them."     Dairy farmers at Nantongye village have long been suppliers of Sanlu, the biggest dairy producer in Hebei and nationwide. The company built five stations in the village to collect fresh milk. Since last Sunday it has stopped buying any milk from farmers as its plants were suspended from production.     Villager Li Zhidong's 18 cows produce about 160 kg of milk a day. In the past week, she had a loss of 330 yuan (48.5 U.S. dollars) per day.     It is now a good news for her that four dairy firms in Hebei have signed agreements with the provincial government to buy 2,500to 3,000 tonnes of milk formerly supplied of Sanlu, a government source told Xinhua.     The local government is also negotiating with Beijing-based Sanyuan Group and Shanghai-based Bright Dairy for milk purchase.     STAND TOGETHER THROUGH CRISIS     Sanlu elected its new board chairman and general manager Zhang Zhenling on Sept. 18. He has apologized to the public on behalf of the company and promised to deal with the incident properly and lead the group through the crisis.     Employees at the lowest level like Tian, a lady in her mid-thirties, were worried about their uncertain futures.     "I have no idea what will happen," she said. She had worked for Sanlu for 12 years and it was her first job. "What if the company shuts down and I lose this job? I am not young and it will be hard to find a new one. I have aged parents to support and a son in primary school," she said.     But most employees have stood with the company. Tian worked at the company from morning till night including weekends, helping set up booths, hand out notices and answer questions from customers.     "What I can do now is to do my best," she said. "I hope Sanlu could pull through it. "

GENEVA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Related parties should enhance diplomatic efforts and show flexibility in order to find a negotiated solution to the Iranian nuclear issue, a senior Chinese diplomat said here on Saturday.     "Currently there is a rare opportunity for promoting the resumption of negotiations on the Iranian nuclear issue," said Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Liu Jieyi, who represented China at a meeting here with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili.     "Enhanced diplomatic efforts and flexibility are needed for an early resumption of negotiations so that a long-term, comprehensive and appropriate solution could be found for the nuclear issue," he said.     Saturday's meeting was led by EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana and attended by senior diplomats from the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.     The United States was represented by Undersecretary of State William Burns at the meeting. His participation was seen as a shift of long-standing U.S. policy toward Iran, as Washington had always insisted that it would not talk with Tehran unless it halts its uranium enrichment activities.     "It's highly significant that for the first time the political directors of all six countries with Solana were talking with our Iranian colleagues," Liu told reporters.     "It was the shared hope of all parties participating in the meeting that we find a negotiated solution to the nuclear issue," he said.     Both Solana and Jalili said Saturday's meeting was positive and constructive and promoted understanding of each other's positions.     They also agreed to talk again by phone or in person in about two weeks.     At the meeting, Iran failed to give a clear answer to a package of incentives presented by the six countries last month over the resumption of nuclear negotiations.     "We hope very much we get the answer and we hope it will be done in a couple of weeks," Solana told a press conference following the meeting.     The package of incentives suggests that Iran get a temporary reprieve from economic and financial sanctions in exchange for freezing its enrichment activities. Preliminary negotiations over a permanent halt could then begin.     "The package is supported by all six powers ... we think if negotiations could be resumed on this basis and finally a negotiated solution could be found, it will be a very good way out," Liu said.

I feel deeply sorry for those dead brothers," said Pu Taihua, a rescuer in Beichuan, tears mixing with sweat on his face.     Although rescuers are being challenged by the rugged terrain and aftershocks in Sichuan, more than 100,000 soldiers and rescuers are still battling to search for buried survivors.     The quake victims, who are clinging to hope that their relatives have somehow survived, also took time to join the mourning.     In Beichuan County, one of the worst-hit areas in Sichuan, surviving students, wearing white T-shirts, stood with their heads deeply bowed. Some of them had been orphaned by the earthquake.     In Anxian County, also hit hard, more than 1,800 homeless residents gathered on open ground for the remembrance. Peng Hao, a boy who lost his father, wrapped himself in his dad's blanket and wailed plaintively with his mother.     In the Tianpeng Middle School in Pengzhou City, Sichuan, thousands of people gathered on the playground. An eerie silence was broken by cries from the crowd after a baby, Dong Chengyuan, began to wail in the arms of his grandmother.     The baby, whose grandfather died in the quake, wore a black armband that read "mourning" in Chinese.     Baby Dong's mother, Chen Jiao, said the family had cried all their tears. "When I found my dad, he was crushed by two beams, one on his neck and another on his feet. His body was almost disfigured," said Chen.     After the memorial, residents wandered around the playground, reluctant to leave.     WOUNDS WILL HEAL     From herdsmen and hearing-impaired children to elderly survivors of the deadly 1976 Tangshan earthquake, from bus drivers in Beijing to barter traders along the China-Russia border in Manzhouli, grieving Chinese are rallying against the disaster.     "My best friend died in the earthquake, but wounds will heal, homes will be rebuilt and everything will be all right," said Zhang Xiaomei, a student in the Yinghua Middle School in Deyang City.     On Monday, a downtown square in Chengdu was crammed with thousands of people who shouted "Go, Sichuan!" "Go China!" amid tears.     "The people in Sichuan are not alone. The whole China of is supporting them," said Ma Guoxi, a student in Ningxia University.     Mark Hancock, an Australian teacher in Qinghai, joined hundreds of Chinese mourners in a downtown square in Xining, capital of Qinghai Province.     "It's been a terrible catastrophe for China, for the Chinese people," he said, struggling to hold back tears. "It's a time for China to demonstrate its enormous strength to overcome the tragedy, and people all over the world are with them and supporting them," he added.     "The earthquake took away people's lives, but it will not frighten the brave Chinese people into retreat. We will get over the hardships and a stronger China will have a better future," said He Bin, a police officer of the Anhui Provincial Public Security Department. President Hu Jintao, standing atop the rubble amid aftershocks on Sunday, said through loudspeakers to the soldiers in the quake-hit Shifang City: "I truly believe that the heroic Chinese people will not yield to any difficulty!"
