SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Researchers are deploying a specially-trained canine to help search for koalas in Australia affected by the country's wildfires.The San Diego Zoo-backed team is using "Smudge," a dog trained to follow the scent of koalas, to locate the animals who have survived Australia's devastating fires in the Blue Mountains.“We don’t know how much wildlife is left in the wake of these fires,” said Kellie Leigh, a San Diego Zoo Global-supported researcher. “In many places, the fire burned so hot that it even melted metal road signs, we don’t expect to find survivors there. However, we are getting reports of koalas turning up in new locations; they are on the move due to the fires. There are likely to be unburnt patches of native habitat that would provide refuges for koalas and a range of other threatened species."Smudge is just one of the many dogs being used to sniff out koalas in the wake of the country's fires that have decimated the wildlife population. About 2.5 million acres of the region have been affected by the fires.“We need to find out where koalas might have survived,and work out how many we have left—to guide search and rescue efforts, and also to plan for helping koala populations to recover,” Leigh added. “We know that wildlife detection dogs out perform humans when it comes to finding wildlife that can be hard to see, like koalas up in the tree canopy. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police officers arrested a man for attacking a four-year-old girl outside an apartment complex on the 4300 block of 50th Street.According to witnesses, the little girl’s father was dropping the girl off at her grandmother’s home around 11:30. Before the grandmother could walk the four-year-old through the security gates of her complex, a stranger attacked the child from behind.A neighbor, who only asked to use his first name, Robert, says he heard someone calling for the help, so he came outside. He says he saw the grandmother had gotten through the gate, but the father and another neighbor were outside of the entrance trying to hold off the attacker. Robert felt compelled to step in.“He came at me, and it seemed like he was going for someone, and that someone was a child,” he said, “so I had no other recourse, I hit him once he went down. He bit my leg. He got up, and he started coming after me.”But the man didn’t stay down, instead continued to attack.“Very very vicious, he had a very crazy look,” Robert said. “He wasn’t saying anything, he was grunting like a feral animal. He was exceptionally strong. He just wouldn’t quit, even when the police got here, he was very very strong.”Robert says he had no idea why he was trying to hurt the little girl but said the man might have been under the influence of something.Police arrested the suspect.Robert recalled seeing red marks around the little girl’s neck but said she was okay though visibly shaken.She is home with her parents. 1541

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Renters in the city of San Diego will have one final day to apply for emergency financial assistance.The deadline to apply for the city’s one-time program, which provides up to ,000 per household, is Friday, Aug. 7.Families with past due or upcoming rent payments are eligible, and payments for those who are selected are expected to be distributed in the next few weeks.Each household has to provide documentation to prove they are not currently receiving any rental subsidies. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego is giving dockless scooters and bikes preferred parkingThe city is in the process of installing 330 rideshare scooter and bike spaces throughout downtown. The first few of them have been spotted in Cortez Hill. “I think it’s smart,” said Carlos Navarro who work at a restaurant in the Gaslamp “they drive by our store — running into the customers or hit the cars that are parked.” The city says the spaces are being placed at red zones where cars cannot park. “It’s not going to be as crowded or cluttered,” said scooter rider Autumn McFeeley, “the city must really like them.” A class action lawsuit was filed against the city earlier this year claiming San Diego has failed to maintain pathways for people with disabilities. “Allowing there to to be safe storage and parking for those vehicles off the sidewalk is a much better approach, said Colin Parent with Circulate San Diego, “it’ll help minimize those kinds of conflicts” The city of San Diego says more information will be made available about this project in coming days. 1069
