SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Saturday marked the first weekend San Diego County restaurants were under indoor dining restrictions and they've gotten creative to stay afloat during the pandemic.Monday the Governor announced San Diego County joined the state's watch list due to the spike in coronavirus cases.The county announced bars, restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, zoos, museums, and cardrooms will need to shutter indoor operations Monday night at midnight.Saturday on Harbor Island, Coasterra debuted a "pop up" dining experience on their 'float' that normally hosts events.Executive Chef and Partner in the Cohn Restaurant Group, Deborah Scott thought their event space on the water (dubbed The Float) was a perfect place for extra seating. Their sister restaurant Island Prime had to close it's doors, due to the new restrictions.So the Island Prime, moved to an island.On the 'float' they can seat up to 68 people, that's 68 plates that Island Prime can now sell at a time. Scott said they were booked Saturday, their first official night, but are not filling it to capacity.She said they want to make sure things run smoothly."My biggest fear is that everyone is going to come out here and have dinner and go, 'Can you just move Island Prime out here?'" She said chuckling. The same sentiment was shared in Escondido where they kicked off the first weekend of street-side dining.One lane in both directions down Grand Avenue is shut down between Maple and Juniper Streets to make way for the extra tables, chairs and umbrellas.A huge opportunity for indoor venues like The Grand Tea Room.Owner of The Grand Tea Room Lousia Magoo said inside she can seat about 50 people, "so bringing more out here, I could probably seat 30 people at a time so it really means everything to us."Magoo also sits on the Downtown Business Association Board and said they've dedicated ,000 in supplies for the restaurants to help with creating their outdoor dining space.Saturday she said they handed out 50 umbrellas and are expecting more tables and chairs Monday, providing San Diegans a dose of normalcy both on the water and curbside. 2134

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego veterans from WWII and the Korean War are getting ready for a special trip. This weekend they'll board an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.10News is getting exclusive access to the trip and was at Honor Flight San Diego's last planning meeting before the special weekend gets off the ground. David Smith, Founder of Honor Flight San Diego, says it's incredibly important to thank our veterans while there's still time. The oldest veteran on this weekend's flight will be 99-years-old. "I've actually had veterans come up to me and say, 'ya know, in all these years no one has ever said thank you to me - this means so much'," said Smith.The group relies on fundraising to make the honor flight a reality - it costs 0,000 for the entire weekend.Our coverage of the Honor Flight continues Friday morning when Reporter Amanda Brandeis boards the plane with the veterans and will continue through Sunday when they all return to San Diego. Honor Flight San Diego welcomes the community to join the Sunday's homecoming at the San Diego International Airport. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s homeless crisis is an ongoing concern but programs, nonprofits, and schools are working to make sure people find shelter. When students arrive at Monarch School, there’s no telling what they might need. The staff is prepared. “We have four showers on campus. We open at 6 a.m., we have breakfast…we have a clothing boutique,” said CEO Erin Spiewak. Everything a child needs to prepare for the day is available because students don’t have a place to call home. “They're either living in a hotel or motel in one of our downtown shelters they're in a car or on the street.” Roughly 23,000 school-age children in San Diego County are homeless, according to Spiewak. Monarch serves about 300 of them. “The one thing that becomes stable for them is Monarch School; coming to the same school everyday, seeing the same friends, seeing the same staff becomes a ritual and a habit where they now have an environment where they feel safe and secure,” said Spiewak. In addition to meeting students’ physical needs, the school also to address students’ emotional well-being by providing therapists on and off site. The ultimate goal is making sure students get a quality education. “We know that the lack of a high school diploma is a big indicator of adult homelessness,” Spiewak said. “We have numbers between 70 to 90 percent of our students are graduating, so we know that with this population our success in getting them to that finish line is imperative to ensure they're not becoming homeless adults.” Homeless adults draw the attention of San Diego City Council member Chris Ward, the chair of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless. Ward says one of the most effective ways of helping people is through programs that intervene before they end up on the streets. “It’s far more cost effective to help people stay housed rather than have them fall in and have their own individual circumstances become more complex,” Ward said. While bridge shelters like the large tents downtown have proven effective in getting a roof over peoples’ heads quickly, Ward says the ultimate solution is simply more affordable housing. “We have to work on the permanent solutions. Housing construction and new development takes a long time. We have to find new resources to fund that and make that happen,” Ward said. Ward wants voters to approve a housing bond to fund more projects. “We’ve done all of our homework; we know what the needs are and if we all agree this is the way to move forward, hopefully we'll have more to work with in the years ahead,” said Ward. When it comes time to build more housing, nonprofits turn to another nonprofit: Home Aid. The group builds or renovates facilities at below-market rate. In Escondido, Home Aid partnered with Interfaith Community Services on a facility for veterans who have been discharged from the hospital and have nowhere to go. Since 2002, Home Aid has completed 26 projects around the county and has dozens more in the works. 2996

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego State University set a new record for its Aztec Rock Hunger annual food drive, collecting 590,503 pounds of food from Sept. 28 through Oct. 21, which the school will now donate to the Jacobs & Cushman Food Bank. The amount exceeds last years total of 588,915 pounds, and includes both non-perishable foods and  donations, which the school collected at the SDSU bookstore, athletic events, SDSU Dining locations and Aztec Proud events. Jim Flores, CEO of the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank, said the partnership with the school, which has raised more than two million pounds of food since its inception in 2008, has been beneficial."We are very grateful to the students, faculty and administration at San Diego State University for supporting the food bank," Flores said. "We are currently feeding more than 37,000 people every month in communities throughout the county, including thousands of students through our College Hunger-relief Program." Aztecs Rock Hunger was started by Associated Students (A.S.) which works alongside multiple campus groups, including SDSU Athletics and the College Area Business District. Christian Onwuka, A.S. vice president of financial affairs, said the partnership is a source of pride. "It has been amazing to see so many different divisions and facets of campus come together and give their all toward this campaign fighting food insecurity," he said. Not all of the donations will go to the food bank, however. 20 percent of the food remaining on campus will go towards helping SDSU's Economic Crisis Response Team (ECRT). The ECRT works to prevent food insecurity for students on campus, as well as provide emergency support for those in a sudden economic crisis.  1894
