To do this, you need to petition your school with a financial aid appeal letter and provide evidence to support your need for more aid. If you wait too long, the aid money could run out.Those who file the FAFSA early are more likely to receive their school-based financial aid awards with their college acceptance letters. While your federal aid will be the same no matter where you attend college, you can send your FAFSA information to several schools to see which will give you the best school-based aid package. Doing so early will allow you to compare offers and appeal if necessary.If you apply for the FAFSA late, you not only risk a smaller award to begin with, but you also have less opportunity to “shop around” and submit a successful appeal letter.A quarter of parents surveyed by Discover Student Loans say they’ll appeal their financial aid decision because of previous award amounts and pandemic-induced changes in family finances. As an excessive heat warning hits Southern California, beachgoers are staying onshore, despite the high temperatures.“My wife was a little freaked out,” said local surfer Craig Neil. “She sent me a text and said she’s getting the kids out of the water.”Out of the water because of what’s lurking inside the section of the Pacific Ocean.“We had a confirmed shark sighting,” said another surfer.A 12-foot great white shark spotted just off the San Clemente Pier, something locals say is happening more often.“It seems fairly normal here,” Neil said. “There’s usually shark sightings every month or two at least.”Now a new study is showing the number of great white sharks is rising off the California coast.“The simple reason for that is we’ve done a better job of protecting them,” said Chris Lowe a professor of marine biology and the director of the Shark Lab at California State University, Long Beach. “We’ve done a better job managing our fisheries and believe it or not, the water has gotten cleaner over the last 40 years."Lowe and his team have spent the past several years tracking these aquatic predators, saying while they are seeing more sharks in the water, they’re not seeing more attacks.“So, that’s all good news but we just have to learn ways to be better guests in somebody else’s home,” he said.A home with a now expanding zip code with more great white sharks moving up the coast.“Now we’re starting to see them in places off Monterey, a place where we hadn’t seen them before and this is largely due to the oceans getting warmer,” Lowe said.Lowe says this change in temperature is being seen around the world, which is something he believes will cause more great white sharks to relocate to colder waters, which could disrupt the ocean’s food chain and also alter the ecosystem.“If they get moved to a location where there’s less food, they’re just not going to do very well,” he said. “In fact, their populations may start to go down or they start to feed on something they never fed on before.”Back on the beach, stranded surfers like Neil stare at closure signs waiting for lifeguards to reopen the water, saying the ocean is the shark’s turf and that we’re just guests swimming in it. 2216

An Arizona Coyotes hockey player was arrested in Scottsdale. Scottsdale police said 27-year-old Richard Panik was arrested for trespassing. The hockey player reportedly refused to leave the entrance of a local restaurant on April 8 at 8:50 p.m. According to police, Panik appeared to be intoxicated during his contact with officers. Panik was booked into Scottsdale City Jail for criminal trespass and later released with a criminal citation. The 27-year-old played 37 games during the 2017-2018 season with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the Arizona Coyotes. He played 35 games with Arizona. The Arizona Coyotes released the following statement to Scripps station KNXV in Phoenix:“We are aware of the incident and are still gathering information as it pertains to the situation.  We will have no further comment at the present time.”   914

An Idaho woman reported to the Nampa Police Department Tuesday night that her 6-year-old son had been given a small bag of marijuana while out trick-or-treating.She reported that she had been going through his candy bag and found the small plastic baggie that appeared to contain marijuana. She brought the baggie to the Nampa Police Department and turned it over to officers.   Nampa Police field tested the substance found in the candy bag and it indeed tested “presumptively positive” for marijuana, said Nampa Police Sgt. Tim Riha.“Officers obtained the route that (the child) took while out trick-or-treating. (The child) had been to several houses in that area, but it is unknown which house provided the marijuana to the trick-or-treater,” Riha explained.  The baggie that contained the marijuana will be sent to the lab for fingerprint testing, he added.The incident is still under investigation.  The Nampa Police Department reminds parents to inspect all candy and items obtained by their kids while out on Halloween.“If any candy looks like it has been tampered with or opened, it is best just to throw the item away. Be wary of allowing children to consume any homemade treats and fully inspect all other items,” Riha advised. 1276
