GUANGZHOU, May 24 (Xinhua) -- Heavy rains continued to hit south China's Guangdong Province on Sunday, triggering flood alert as rivers were swelling.     The downpours continued to sweep the Pearl River Delta area from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Sixteen observation sites reported precipitation of more than 100 millimeters, the Guangdong Provincial Hydrological Bureau said.     Two people were killed in a rain-triggered landslide Friday midnight, in Xingning city in Guangdong's northeast.     The Changsha hydrological station in the lower reaches of the Tanjiang River saw a 2.5-meter-high water level at 11:35 a.m. Sunday, 40 centimeters higher than the warning level.     Another one, the Moyang river in western Guangdong is also swelling and expected to have a 5.8-meter flood peak at midday Monday.     From 8 a.m. Friday to 8 a.m. Sunday, the whole province had an average rainfall of 58 mm, with 170 mm in the Pearl River Delta area.     The provincial flood control and drought relief authorities have ordered local governments to closely monitor weather changes and brace for possible flooding.

MOSCOW, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said here Monday that he was satisfied and pleased with the smooth development of strategic partnership of cooperation with China.     Medvedev said during his meeting with visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi that he was looking forward to the upcoming state visit of his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao, whom he has held a "successful" meeting with on the sidelines of the G20 London Summit. BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao Thursday morning presided over a top-level meeting discussing how to deal with any possible H1N1 influenza epidemic, Health Minister Chen Zhu said at a news briefing.     Hu, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, called together other members of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the specific issue, which was triggered by the spread of a new strain of H1N1 virus in North America and other regions.     Hu and other top leaders heard briefings of the country's prevention and preparation for possible epidemic in China, Chen said, adding that the top meeting delayed the scheduled press conference to the afternoon.Chinese Health Minister Chen Zhu attends a press conference held by the State Council Information Office of China in Beijing on April 30, 2009. BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Many countries around the world said the July 5 riot in northwest China is an internal affair of the country, and the Chinese government is handling the incident properly.     A spokesman for the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Popov, said Xinjiang is an inalienable part of China, and the unrest is a purely internal matter of China.     The riot in Urumqi, the capital of China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, left 197 people dead and more than 1,680 injured.     Popov also expressed hope that China could soon restore stability in the region by adopting effective measures in accordance with the law.     He said Belarus expresses its deep sympathy to the people who suffered personal injuries or loss of property during the violence.     A spokesman for Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, Abdul Basit, said his country deplores any attempt to hinder China's progress.     "We deplore any such attempt" which tries to impede the progress which has been achieved by China in the context of social harmony, he said in a recent interview with Xinhua.     "We are committed not to allow any element in Pakistan to work against the interests of China because China's interests are Pakistan's interests. We cannot allow any activity that will damage China's interests," Basit said.     Pakistan's Foreign Ministry, in a statement issued shortly after the Urumqi riot, applauded the efforts of the Chinese leadership to promote the concept of harmony both at home, in Asia and the rest of the world.     Turkish Parliament Speaker Koksal Toptan said his country supports the principle of resolving the issue within the framework of the territorial integrity of China.     The Turkish Foreign Ministry said the country highly values its relations with China and does not intend to interfere in China's internal affairs.     Thailand's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday the July 5 riot is a domestic issue of China and it believs China is capable of stabilizing the situation and restoring peace and harmony in Xinjiang.     Combodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said: "The Chinese government is taking appropriate measures to handle the issue."     The Foreign Ministry of Laos also issued a statement on the July 5 riot. It said Laos believes the measures the Chinese government has adopted to safeguard social stability are necessary and legitimate, and expressed hope the government could bring peace back to the region at an early date.
