That’s what many San Diego County restaurant owners felt after hearing the county has suspended enforcement activities on restaurants, for now.A judge’s ruling Wednesday allowed two strip clubs to stay open, and in a surprising twist, extended to the restaurant industry, allowing for in-person dining.While the county sorts out what it will do next, some restaurants are taking the opportunity to reopen for in-person dining, even if it’s short-lived.“I was thrilled to hear the judge’s ruling,” said Julian Hakim, co-owner of The Taco Stand. “I wish there was, even now, a little more clarity. We know the county is not going to enforce, but we’re not sure if ABC who holds our alcohol licenses or others choose to keep enforcing.”Hakim is cautiously optimistic and will now offer minimal outdoor dining options at his locations in downtown San Diego, La Jolla, Encinitas, and North Park.“I’m still prepared for anything,” he said. “There really isn’t any evidence that sitting outside is contributing to the COVID cases; I think there’s evidence of people being inside, so I would agree with that, and I wouldn’t open inside just yet.”Mikko Sushi’s Escondido, Carlsbad, and Vista locations reopened for outdoor dining and indoor dining at 25% capacity Thursday.“We decided to open with all the safety guidelines that are mandated by the county and state we will follow that,” said Mikko Sushi co-owner Mia Davis. “We debated actually, should we really open or not, but after thinking through overnight, many of our employees need jobs, this is right before Christmas, and they need to put the food on the table, they need to pay their rent.”Davis said she had to furlough 70% of her employees after the latest restrictions on restaurants went into place, and they could only offer takeout.Both Davis Hakim said they have many safety precautions in place, and they’re following what happens next closely.“We take this COVID-19 seriously, and we know the cases are increasing, and we just want to follow the rules.” 2069

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Faith and community leaders and former gang members from across San Diego are calling on gangs to agree to “A Season of Peace.”They're asking for no gunfire from Thanksgiving (Nov. 26) through January 1, 2021.With the coronavirus disrupting traditional violence intervention efforts, there has been a rise in gang and gun violence. According to SANDAG's 2019 report on homicides in the San Diego region, a firearm was used in 55% of homicides. Also, firearms were used 100% of the time in gang-involved homicides. Compared to mid-year 2019, there were a greater number of homicides -- 37% increase -- reported to law enforcement in the San Diego region from January to June of 2020. Since SANDAG reported on homicides for that time period, gun violence and homicides continue to rise.During the Season of Peace campaign, community leaders will lead community walks of peace, organize street-side memorial services, ceasefire agreements with gang leaders, and host a tree planting in honor of those who've died because of community violence.Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Community Assistant Support Team (CAST) will follow the advice of health officials, collaborate with law enforcement and politicians to ensure everyone's safety.For the past eight years, CAST has brought quality community service to families impacted by gun violence with de-escalation support, conflict resolution, retaliation prevention, and in hospital spiritual care. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Drone footage recently captured a rare sighting of a blue whale off San Diego's coastline, as it swims right up to a small boat.Domenic Biagini, owner of Gone Whale Watching, says he's already starting to see blue whale sightings off San Diego's coastline this season. In one video he captured, a whale swims up to his boat to investigate before disappearing below the water's surface."This year is looking like much more of a normal year," Biagini said. "I think this is really going to shape up to be a really good blue whale season."He adds that an abundance of krill and pristine conditions are leading to the sightings. Blue whales generally follow where krill are swimming in coastal waters. If there's a high level of krill, the whales will typically spend the entire summer nearby.Blue whale sightings come in spurts, Biagini says, while grey whales are more reliable, making this season even more of a treat for whale watchers.And whale watching could be a safe alternative to sight-seeing this summer, according to Biagini. He says he's currently running private charters, so groups are limited to single household unit sizes and there's enough room for people to space out."These are the largest animals that have ever lived on our planet," Biagini said. "People that get to see them, there's not many."Not a lot of information is known about the mating and breeding habits of blue whales, giving researchers even more opportunities to learn about the animals. 1498
