The U.S. surpassed 200,000 deaths linked to COVID-19 on Tuesday, according to a database kept by Johns Hopkins University.The deaths — all of which have occurred since February — out-total the number of Americans lost to World War I, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the War in Afghanistan and the Iraq War combined.The 200,000 deaths are the most of any country around the world. That ranks sixth in the world and in the company of countries like Spain (65.27) and Mexico (58.24)The U.S. also leads the world with 6.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19. India (5.5 million), Brazil (4.5 million) and Russia (1.1 million) are the only other countries with at least 1 million confirmed cases of the virus.Johns Hopkins reports that daily confirmed cases of COVID-19 dropped throughout the month of August. However, case rates have ticked up throughout September, and top health experts like Dr. Anthony Fauci are bracing for a difficult winter.Earlier this month, Fauci warned that a wintertime surge could be possible as weather forces Americans indoors and cities begin relaxing COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Health officials have warned that large indoor gatherings can result in COVID-19 superspreader events.The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington — a model often used by the White House — currently projects that an additional 175,000 Americans will die of the virus by Jan. 1. That projection could drop to as little as 65,000 additional deaths with a universal mask mandate and could increase to as many as 225,000 additional deaths with easing restrictions. 1838

The United States has set another record for new coronavirus cases. More than 50,000 new cases were reported Wednesday, a single day record.For comparison, it took over two months to record that number of cases nationwide when the pandemic started.New cases have increased in at least 37 states over the past week. But Dr. Anthony Fauci says it's not too late to turn the surge around."It does not have to be 100,000 cases a day,” said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “I used that number because I wanted to jolt people. If you leave the virus to its own devices, it will take off on you."The stark numbers have prompted state officials to issue warnings about gatherings for the Fourth of July weekend. Doctors say it could be a “perfect storm” for another spike.The mayor of Houston fears hospitals could reach capacity by mid-July if people don't help change the trajectory."Unless the behavior changes and people will engage in social distancing and wearing their masks and proper hygiene, there could reach a point where they are really at their limit," said Mayor Sylvester Turner. 1153

The Transportation Security Administration says they found three times the rate of loaded guns at checkpoints in July than they did at the exact time last year, despite fewer passengers traveling due to the coronavirus pandemic.In a press release, the agency said that 80% of the firearms that come through a checkpoint are loaded. "It’s just an accident waiting to happen," TSA Administrator David Pekoske said in the release.TSA said they found 15.3 guns per million people screened last month, which is up from the rate of 5.1 guns per million people in July 2019.The agency says that's alarming because they screened 75% fewer travelers last month.“TSA is diligently working to ensure our employees and passengers are safe and secure while traveling during a pandemic, and yet we are noticing a significant increase in loaded firearms coming into checkpoints,” said Pekoske in the press release. “Travelers must understand that firearms are prohibited items at airports and in the passenger cabins of aircraft. As hard as we are working to mitigate other risks at this time, no one should be introducing new ones.”Guns are permitted in checked bags, but they must be unloaded, and in a locked case, TSA said.Last year, 4,432 guns were found in carry-on bags at checkpoints nationwide, which is about 12.1 firearms per day, and 87% of them were loaded, the agency said. 1380
