(KGTV) - The Vista Unified School District's school board on Tuesday passed new rules for its middle and high schools seeing cases of COVID-19In a special meeting, the school board discussed a staffing issue that’s occurred since reopening for in-person learning last week.There have been at least four confirmed COVID-19 cases within the district. As a result, teachers are being quarantined and school officials say they’re having difficulty finding substitute teachers to fill in.The board unanimously approved a plan that would allow in-person learning to continue as the district addresses the staffing issue. The plan is to use a threshold system to close down some of its middle schools and high schools with positive COVID-19 cases.The details have yet to be hashed out, but in principle, the district's board agreed the new rules would be:-- If one school has two positive cases in a specific time, the whole school would have to switch to virtual learning for 14 days-- If three secondary schools see one case each within a certain period, all three would have to go virtual for two weeksMission Vista High School already has two positive COVID-19 cases, so the district plans to close the school on Thursday and transition students and staff to virtual learning. VISTA (CNS and KGTV) - A man accused of killing his 7-year-old daughter at the family's Oceanside home pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder, assault and child cruelty charges.Pedro Araujo, 27, is charged in last Wednesday's slaying of Mariah Araujo. Police have not commented on the cause of her death, but the criminal complaint indicates that a knife was used.Mariah was stabbed at least 10 times in the neck and upper body, prosecutors said. Detectives questioned Araujo and took him into custody on suspicion of murdering his daughter, Bussey said.Araujo's arraignment was initially scheduled for last Friday, but was postponed twice because he was being held in ``enhanced observation housing,'' according to court staff.Members of the girl's family gathered at the Vista courthouse last Friday and told reporters that Araujo was unstable and should not have been anywhere near his daughters.Karina Avina, Mariah's aunt, said Araujo did not have custody of the children as numerous Child Protective Services cases were open and ongoing against him, though the circumstances of those cases was unclear.``We want him to pay the max. (KGTV) -- Deputies arrested a man they say kidnapped his girlfriend’s 8-year-old son early Wednesday morning.According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, the alleged kidnapping happened on the 300 block of Hillside Terrace at 2:15 a.m.Authorities say Guillermo Cruz, 32, was intoxicated when he drove to his girlfriend’s house, jumped a balcony fence, and abducted the woman’s sleeping 8-year-old son. Deputies say Cruz is not the child’s father.After calling 911, deputies spotted the vehicle Cruz was driving and pulled him over before making the arrest. The young boy was unharmed.Deputies say they noticed Cruz had an empty vodka bottle in the car with him.
