BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- China's housing authorities on Monday urged local governments to put more efforts into the building of low-income housing.The national goal for 2010 is to build 3 million apartments for low-income families, renovate 2.8 million in urban shantytown areas, and expand renovation of dilapidated houses in rural areas, an unidentified official with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development (MOHURD) told a teleconference.The ministry urged governments at all levels to strictly implement preferential policies in land provision, funding, tax reduction and credit support for low-income housing projects, to ensure the realization of the annual construction goals.MOHURD also called for efforts to curb the precipitous rise of housing prices in some cities by increasing the supply of small and medium-sized houses and to rein in the speculation on rising house prices.

"We have offered condolences to the victims on many occasions."What China has in mind in approaching the incident, in which 46 South Korean sailors died after their warship sank in March, is maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula, he said.China attaches importance to the joint investigation conducted by South Korea and other countries and the reactions of various parties, and will take its position on the basis of truth and facts, he added.China appealed for calm on the part of the concerned parties so as to avoid a further escalation of tension and even conflict, he said.The Chinese premier said China understands the current difficult situation President Lee Myung-bak and the South Korean government are facing.China will seek information from various sources and seriously study it before making clear its stand in "a fair and objective manner," he said."We will adopt an impartial position," he said. BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- Industrial enterprises in China's 24 regions reported combined profits of 690.8 billion yuan (101.2 billion U.S. dollars) in the first quarter, more than double the figure of the same period last year, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in a statement Wednesday.The NBS did not provide reasons for the 102.6-percent profit surge. The figure was down 21.1 percentage points for the first two months of the year, the statement said.Analysts attributed the growth to a low comparison base during the first quarter of 2009 when the country's economic growth was dragged down by the global economic downturn. The economic recovery, backed by government stimulus measures, also helped lift profits.The People's Bank of China, the central bank, said in a statement last week that industrial production in the first quarter had accelerated and profits of enterprises continued to expand on growing domestic demand.Altogether 38 of the 39 major industrial sectors saw year-on-year growth in profits, with profits of the steel industry up 3,380 percent and those of the power sector up 1,540 percent, the statement said.

BEIJING, April 28 (Xinhua) -- The severe drought in southwest China has broken after six falls of rain in the past month, Chen Zhenlin, spokesman with the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), said here Wednesday.The rain occurred from March 22 to April 26 and ranged from 50 to 100 millimeters.The drought had parched the southern areas of Yunnan Province, the northeast regions of Guizhou Province, and the eastern and southern parts of Guangxi Province, Chen said at a briefing.The drought was among the most severe in decades, having a serious impact on people's lives and economic development.More than 20 million people and 10 million farm animals were affected by water shortages at the drought's peak.The CMA dispatched 28 teams and expert groups to drought-hit areas to enhance drought-relief work and seed clouds after the drought began last autumn.
