RAMONA (KGTV) - Seven acres burned in a brush fire near downtown Ramona Saturday, according to CalFire. At 6 p.m. Cal Fire PIO Issac Sanchez said the fire was 20% contained. The fire burned near Montecito Road and North Ramona Street.Hundreds of neighbors were evacuated from the Ramona Mountain Valley Apartments, where the fire burned right up to their fence. Juliette Farey, a mother and resident at the complex said she was coming back from her son's birthday party and when she saw the smoke, she knew her home was at risk."We were scared for our lives," she said.Farey said the unruly gold bushes on the other side of the fence were out of control, and wished they would be better maintained to keep a fire from happening in the future.Sanchez said the fire started with a pile of debris in the riverbed then spread to nearby grass. Sixty-five fire fighters responded, working to protect neighbors, two planes and a helicopter also jumped into action to help. Farey believes homeless who live in the riverbed started the fire, saying the high rent is to blame. "They probably lit a fire in the river bottom to stay warm," she said.Other residents were terrified, saying they've never experienced a scare like this."There was just this wall of smoke. I grabbed our animals and my daughters," Angelina Rios said police banged on their door urging them to get out and that's when they saw the wall of smoke steps away. Her daughter Destiny Minjares described the fear gripping her and her neighbors, that turned to excitement as a helicopter soared just over their heads dropping water.Destiny said they got splashed and everyone cheered after the successful maneuver, a feeling that quickly faded as they saw the fire was still raging nearby.Firefighters got a handle on the fire around 6 p.m. The evacuations have been lifted. All road closures have been lifted as well. Firefighters are expected to be at the scene for several hours. This is a developing story. 10News will update as details become available.  2101

President Donald Trump's support for Scott Pruitt may be wavering as White House aides renew a push to convince the President?he should fire his embattled EPA chief, several sources told CNN.White House officials saw a fresh opening to sway Trump against Pruitt late last week after the Atlantic published a report accusing a Pruitt aide of trying to spread negative stories about a fellow Cabinet member, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke. The report struck a chord with the President, who was bothered by the development and has grown more open to his aides' arguments that Pruitt must go, a White House aide and source close to the White House said.Despite nearly a dozen investigations into Pruitt's conduct, Trump has resisted calls to fire Pruitt, worried about disruptions to his deregulatory agenda and concerned that it would be difficult to confirm a successor. White House aides have assured the President the agency's work can continue unabated if the EPA's recently-confirmed deputy administrator, Andrew Wheeler, takes over."The ground has absolutely shifted," said a source close to the White House, who said the President is becoming convinced that Pruitt is doing more harm than good in his position. But it was the allegation that Pruitt's team was taking aim at Zinke in an effort to distract from the EPA administrator's ethical troubles that has especially troubled the President and his aides, who were angry after catching wind of the reported plot, one White House source said. 1514

Prince Andrew's legal team has told CNN that they will not comment on the arrest of Ghislaine Maxwell, a day after an acting U.S. Attorney urged him to come forward with information about the case.On Thursday, Maxwell was charged with four counts relating to her alleged involvement in recruiting and trafficking underage girls for Epstein and two counts of perjury. Epstein himself was arrested and charged with trafficking in 2019, but weeks later was found dead in his jail cell.In announcing the charges against Maxwell on Thursday, Audrey Strauss — the acting U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York — urged anyone with information about the case to come forward, particularly Prince Andrew."We would welcome Prince Andrew coming in to talk with us. We would like to have the benefit of his statement," Strauss said in response to a question about Prince Andrew's involvement in the case.Prince Andrew was a known associate of Epstein and even stayed at his New York apartment in 2010 — two years after Epstein pleaded guilty to sex crimes. Prince Andrew also appears in a photograph with Maxwell and a girl who has since claimed Prince Andrew and Epstein abused her.The Duke of York has strongly denied any wrongdoing in his connection to the case.Sources also told CNN that Prince Andrew's legal team says it's "bewildered" and claimed the team has communicated with the Justice Department twice in the last month. Prince Andrew's representatives claim they never received a response from the Justice Department.British Prime Minister Boris Johnson also refused to comment on the matter Friday, saying he cannot be expected to comment on matters relating to the Royal Family."It's just not the tradition; it's not what we do," Johnson said. 1767

President Donald Trump thanked multiple members of Congress involved in passing the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act at a signing ceremony at Fort Drum, New York, Monday, with one major exception: the senator for whom the bill is named."We would not be here for today's signing ceremony without the dedicated efforts without the dedicated members of Congress who worked so hard to pass the National Defense Authorization Act," Trump said, namechecking Republican members of Congress including Rep. Elise Stefanik, who spoke briefly and represents the district containing Fort Drum, as well as Don Baker, Dan Donovan, Joe Wilson and Martha McSally.Trump, who did not serve in the military himself, has previously attacked?McCain's record of service, saying the Vietnam veteran and former prisoner of war is "not a war hero" because he was captured."He is not a war hero," Trump told pollster Frank Luntz, who was hosting a July 2015 question-and-answer session at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa."He is a war hero," Luntz interjected."He is a war hero because he was captured?" Trump said, cutting him off. "I like people that weren't captured, OK? I hate to tell you. He is a war hero because he was captured. OK, you can have -- I believe perhaps he is a war hero."Trump has since acknowledged that McCain is a hero, but?refused to apologize in subsequent interviews.McCain has been one of the administration's most outspoken Republican critics. The President hasn't backed down on his attacks on McCain, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma, a rare brain cancer, over a year ago. Trump has referenced McCain several times on the campaign trail over the past months without directly naming him, hitting the Arizona senator for his health care vote.Just hours after the signing ceremony, Trump continued the criticism at a campaign event for Rep. Claudia Tenney in Utica, New York."One of our wonderful senators said 'thumbs down' at two o'clock in the morning," he said.Although Trump claimed the Senate was one vote away, in reality, the vote was only to go to conference with the House on the Senate's "skinny repeal."McCain's daughter, conservative commentator Meghan McCain, called Trump's comments "gross and pathetic."John McCain, who is the Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, spearheaded efforts to pass the defense spending bill in the Senate."I am particularly humbled that my colleagues chose to designate legislation of such importance in my name. Serving on the Senate Armed Services Committee has been an incredibly meaningful experience since my first days on Capitol Hill," McCain said in a press release when the bill was passed earlier this month. The bill's formal name is the "John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019," and it is listed on the White House daily guidance as such, but Trump simply called it the "National Defense Authorization Act" at Fort Drum.In mostly scripted remarks Monday, Trump called the measure "the most significant investment in our military in our war fighters in modern history," saying he was "very proud to be a big, big part of it."He also touted the 6 billion in forthcoming 2019 fiscal year military funding, his administration's economic success, and the United States' "leadership in space." 3346
