WILMINGTON, Del. – Joe Biden is calling for a nationwide mask mandate.“Every governor should mandate mandatory mask wearing,” said the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, citing estimates from experts who say a mandate could save 40,000 lives over the next three months.Biden’s remarks came after meeting with public health experts with newly announced running mate Kamala Harris on Thursday. He said they spoke about schools reopening, the distribution of possible vaccines, the existence of racial disparities, and the lack of testing capacity. But he zeroed in on mask wearing.“It doesn’t have anything to do with Democrats, Republicans or Independents, it has to do with a simple proposition,” said Biden. “Every single American should be wearing a mask when they are outside for the next three months at a minimum.”Harris then spoke after Biden finished and reiterated the need for wearing a mask. She mentioned the more than 166,000 people who have died from COVID-19 so far in the U.S.“We know those individuals represent families, loved ones, grandparents, parents, sisters and brothers, aunts and uncles, of people that are mourning their loss every day,” she said. “So what real leadership looks like is Joe Biden, to speak up, sometimes telling us stuff that we don’t necessarily want to hear, but we need to know.”Watch their remarks below:The event came a day after the pair’s first appearance as running mates during an event at a high school in Wilmington, Delaware.During her speech, Harris took aim at President Donald Trump’s response to the pandemic.“At the president's mismanagement of the pandemic has plunged us into the worst economic crisis since the great depression, and we are experiencing a moral reckoning with racism and systemic injustice that has brought a new coalition of conscience to the streets of our country demanding change,” Harris said. “America is crying out for leadership, yet we have a president who cares more about himself than the people who elected him, a president who is making every challenge we face even more difficult to solve, but here is the good news. We do not have to accept the failed government of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.”Trump responded Wednesday evening, saying "I was surprised he picked her because of the horrible way she spoke about him, and frankly because she dropped like a rock."Biden and Harris will likely be holding these types of events often as the 2020 election season ramps up. The Democratic party will kick off its campaign next week with its virtual convention, which will feature several prominent party leaders, including the nominees. In the 24 hours following Biden’s VP announcement, his campaign says he raised million, which more than doubled the campaign’s previous record. 2788

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders slammed Hillary Clinton's new memoir Tuesday, accusing the former secretary of state with running "one of the most negative campaigns in history," adding that the book is a "sad way" for her to continue attacking President Donald Trump."I think it is sad that after Hillary Clinton ran one of the most negative campaigns in history and lost, and the last chapter of her public life is going to be now defined by propping up book sales with false and reckless attacks," she said during her daily briefing. "And I think that is sad way for her to continue this."Sanders, who seemed prepared for the question, said she was unaware whether Trump is going to read the book, entitled "What Happened.""I would think he is pretty well versed on what happened, and I think it is pretty clear to all of America," she said.Clinton's post-2016 campaign memoir was officially released Tuesday. It's a nearly 500-page reflection on the 2016 campaign that heads plenty of blame on outside factors but finds Clinton facing up to many off the mistakes she made before her stunning loss to Trump.Clinton signed books at a New York City Barnes & Noble on Tuesday afternoon, where supporters camped out overnight to be the first in line to meet the former Democratic nominee. In the memoir, Clinton slams Trump as an ill-prepared president and suggests that his election was illegitimate, saying she lost primarily because of Russian intervention in the 2016 election on behalf of Trump and fired FBI Director James Comey's announcement days before the election that the bureau was re-opening (and then closing) their investigation into Clinton's emails. But Clinton also takes her fair share of blame, coping to her inability to match Trump's anger and her failure to understand what the American electorate wanted. She also calls her decision to use a private email server campaign defining, but blames the media for blowing the story out of proportion."I think it's fair to say that I didn't realize how quickly the ground was shifting under all our feet," she writes. "I was running a traditional presidential campaign with carefully thought-out policies and painstakingly built coalitions, while Trump was running a reality TV show that expertly and relentlessly stoked Americans' anger and resentment." 2345

WILBRAHAM, Mass. (AP) — Friendly’s Restaurants, an East Coast dining chain known for its Fribble milkshake and ice cream sundaes, is filing for bankruptcy protection. All 130 of its locations will remain open while it restructures under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.Substantially all of its assets are being sold to the restaurant company, Amici Partners Group.“Over the last two years, Friendly’s has made important strides toward reinvigorating our beloved brand in the face of shifting demographics, increased competition, and rising costs,” said George Michel, the company's CEO. “We achieved this by delivering menu innovation, re-energizing marketing, focusing on take-out, catering and third-party delivery, establishing a better overall experience for customers, and working closely with our franchisees and restaurant teams. Unfortunately, like many restaurant businesses, our progress was suddenly interrupted by the catastrophic impact of COVID-19, which caused a decline in revenue as dine-in operations ceased for months and re-opened with limited capacity."The pandemic has hit the restaurant sector hard, particularly those that rely on people in their dining rooms. At least 10 chains have filed for bankruptcy protection since the pandemic began this year. But Friendly’s Restaurant, like most other chains that have stumbled this year, had been struggling. The Wilbraham, Massachusetts, company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2011 as well. 1470

With many charities in need amid the coronavirus pandemic, Congress approved a program that allows Americans to write off up to 0 in charitable donations without filing an itemized return. The program, which was part of the CARES Act approved by Congress in the spring, is intended for those who take a standardized deduction. According to the IRS, 87% of tax filers take a standardized deduction. The IRS encourages tax payers to go to the “Tax Exempt Organization Search” in order to ensure the donation is eligible for a tax deduction. The IRS also reminds Americans to keep records of donations, such as obtaining a receipt of the contribution.“Our nation’s charities are struggling to help those suffering from COVID-19, and many deserving organizations can use all the help they can get,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig. “The IRS reminds people there’s a new provision that allows for up to 0 in cash donations to qualifying organizations to be deducted from income. We encourage people to explore this option to help deserving tax-exempt organizations – and the people and causes they serve.”More info can be found here. 1143

While hundreds of families wait in agony to learn the fate of missing loved ones, officials gave a gut-wrenching forecast on the fate of California's Camp Fire:It's not even halfway done burning yet.Since the Camp Fire erupted 10 days ago in Butte County, it has killed 77 people, destroyed more than 9,700 homes and torched an area the size of Chicago. But the blaze probably won't be fully contained until November 30, according to Cal Fire, the state's forestry and fire protection agency."It is overwhelming, I don't have any word to describe it," Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said. "This is unprecedented. No one has had to deal with this magnitude that caused so much destruction and regrettably so much death."Meanwhile, displaced residents are in limbo. Many are in Chico, Butte County's most populous city, about 15 miles from ground zero of the disaster, the town of Paradise. Some evacuees are staying with friends and family. Others are in a tent city in a Walmart parking lot. On Sunday, those seeking a place to grieve trickled into the First Christian Church of Chico for a candlelight vigil.A sign in the church set an intention for the hourslong open memorial: "We will rise from the ashes."The Camp Fire is already the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California history. And with 993 people still unaccounted for, officials fear the death toll could keep rising.Crews are combing the remnants of houses where all evidence of life has been wiped out by flames. Many of the searchers have lost their own homes and are looking for the remains of their neighbors. While the search for the dead and missing continues, thousands of firefighters are trying to control the blaze. As of late Sunday, the Camp Fire had seared 150,000 acres and was 65% contained. 1826
