ALEXANDRIA, Ind. -- More than a dozen small dogs were rescued from one of the worst cases of animal hoarding officials in Madison County, Indiana say they have ever seen. Madison County Sheriff's deputies responded to a complaint about dogs barking at a home on Trenton Street in Alexandria on Saturday just after 2 p.m. Responding deputies said the smell from the home was so strong that it reached the driveway and the homeowner had to walk around feces to exit the home. Inside the home, deputies found 18 Shih-Tzu and Rat Terrier mixed dogs with severely matted and unkempt fur and fecal matter on the floors throughout the home. The dogs appeared to be well fed, according to deputies but were in need of intensive care. “When we’re called to help with a situation like this, and you can smell the urine from the driveway…you know it’s going to be really bad,” said Maleah Stringer, Director of the Animal Protection League, Inc. (APL), the city of Anderson’s animal shelter. “There has to be some point along the way that people have to realize they can’t handle caring for this many dogs, and they need help. Sadly, too many don’t make that call and the dogs end up paying the price.”Several of the dogs in the home were being kept inside a small bedroom that was covered in mold and feces. The smell of ammonia inside the home was so intense that two deputies had to be treated for exposure. The owner voluntarily surrendered all 18 dogs to the Animal Protection League of Madison County. According to the APL, one of the dogs was in such poor shape that it had to be euthanized.  “We are hopeful the remaining 17 dogs are eventually healthy enough to be adopted," said Stringer. "Right now, we’re looking at about 0 per dog just to get the basic veterinary care. Allstate Insurance announced on Wednesday that they are planning to lay off 3,800 employees.In a press release, the company said the layoffs were part of a restructuring plan to lower costs.Allstate will make the cuts in the sales, claims, and support departments."Implementing this plan is difficult as we still deal with the impact of the pandemic but necessary to provide customers the best value," said Tom Wilson, Chair, President, and CEO of Allstate in the press release. ALPINE, Calif., (KGTV) -- Some residents in Alpine are ramping up their yard work after Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a State of Emergency for the Calfornia's most wildfire-prone areas. Alpine residents have a name for yard work. "It's a necessary evil. We have to clear it out," Jonathan Hesse said. 10News met Hesse as he and his son Ben were raking brush and chainsawing a dead tree on their front yard. "The drought, they [the trees] couldn't handle it anymore. So they died," Hesse said, pointing at the row of what used to be lush trees. He said the time had come to chop them down because he was sure they would ignite his entire 2.5-acre property. In the last two decades, the Hesse's have had three close calls. Their last evacuation was the 2018 West Fire. Luckily, they survived, as did their home. But they are not taking chances. "This year, there's a lot of weeds, and that's going to be tough to keep up with," Hesse said. Luckily, he has a helpful son and a sturdy tractor to help with the clean-up process. They will eventually put their large pile of dead logs and branches through a wood chipper to make mulch. Thanks to the work they did today, the flammability of their home is much lower than it was yesterday. "That's one thing we want to do. We want to make sure it doesn't get out of control," Hesse said. (KGTV) — Homicide detectives were investigating after a woman was shot and killed in a quiet Alpine neighborhood on Saturday.Around 2 p.m., a resident heard a scream and called 911.San Diego Sheriff's deputies found a woman's body lying halfway out of the passenger seat of a car in front of a neighbor’s driveway in the 3000 block of North Victoria Drive.Deputies detained a man on foot about a half mile away with two hand guns, said Lt. Rich Williams, San Diego County Sheriff's Homicide Unit."The suspect in this case has been identified as forty-two-year-old Paul Paraschak of Alpine," said Williams.Paraschak has been arrested for one count of murder and booked into the San Diego Central Jail, where he is being held without bail.
