LOUISVILLE, Colo. — It's been five months since Jonas Asner's last trip home to Colorado. This visit has an important purpose."I had to fly home to vote," Asner said.Asner's parents, Chris and Lisa Hall, sent his ballot to North Carolina on Oct. 14, where Jonas goes to school. His father, Chris Hall, purchased priority mail through USPS. The ballot was supposed to arrive in two to three days. However, the deadline kept creeping closer and closer with no sign of the envelope.Fearing it wouldn't show up on time, the family was determined to get his vote in."It just became very clear that there was only one way our child was going to be able to vote and that is if you came here to vote," said Asner's mother, Lisa Hall.Asner flew from North Carolina to Colorado Sunday night, voted Monday, and flew fly back Tuesday morning."It was definitely cool to vote in my first presidential elections as a milestone in my life," Asner said.Asner says his parents emphasized the importance of voting."To be able to have a voice in my country is really important to me," Asner said.Editor's note: This story was produced with the help of tips reported through ProPublica's Electionland project. If you experience or witness a problem voting, please let us know. This story was first reported by Gary Brode at KMGH in Denver, Colorado. 1335

Midterms, look what you made Taylor Swift do.In a rare move, singer Taylor Swift has weighed in on politics in a major way, endorsing Tennessee Democrats Phil Bredesen and Jim Cooper, who are running for Senate and House of Representatives, respectively.By her own admission, Swift has been "reluctant" to voice her political opinions in the past, but, she said in an Instagram post, "due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.""I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country," she wrote. "I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent."Swift went after Bredesen's senate race rival, Republican Rep. Marsha Blackburn, in her post, saying the politician's voting record "appalls and terrifies me."Bredesen served as governor of Tennessee from 2003 to 2011.In a tweet, Bredesen thanked Swift for her "kind words.""I'm honored to have your support and that of so many Tennesseans who are ready to put aside the partisan shouting and get things done," he wrote. "We're ready for it.""The choice continues to be clear: voters can either have more of the same old partisan shouting that's coming out of D.C, or they can hire someone who has a track record of getting things done for Tennessee," Bredesen's campaign added in a statement to CNN.Swift included a plea to her young adult fans in her post, urging them to register before the deadline."So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count," she wrote. 1907

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A divided Wisconsin Supreme Court has refused to hear President Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn his election loss to Democrat Joe Biden in the battleground state. The court on Thursday said the case must first wind its way through lower courts. Trump had argued that there would not be enough time to wage the legal battle that way before presidential electors cast their ballots on Dec. 14. An attorney for Trump says he'll file the lawsuit in circuit court. Biden defeated Trump by nearly 20,700 votes in Wisconsin. Trump is seeking to toss out more than 221,000 ballots in the state’s two biggest Democratic counties. 652

MANDEVILLE, Louisiana — If you've been putting off tidying up the house, let this serve as an incentive.Harold and Tina Ehrenberg, a couple from Mandeville, Louisiana, were cleaning up for Thanksgiving guests when they found a lottery ticket they'd purchased months earlier. It turned out to be worth .8 million."We have family coming into town for Thanksgiving, so I was cleaning up the house and found a few Lottery tickets on my nightstand that we hadn't checked," Tina Ehrenberg said in a statement released by the Louisiana Lottery. It's a good thing the couple found the ticket when they did. The drawing was June 6. Theirs was the only winning ticket.Had they waited two more weeks, they'd have gotten zip; the window to claim the prize — 180 days — would have closed. The pair said they couldn't believe their good fortune."I called the winning numbers hotline over and over," Tina Ehrenberg said.Added Harold Ehrenberg: "We kept checking the numbers again and again!"After taxes, the couple took home .2 million, which they plan to put toward retirement."We don't have any plans to buy anything crazy or go on any big trips," Tina Ehrenberg said."The most fun," her husband added, "is going to be depositing that check." 1239

LYON, France (AP) — The United States women's soccer team was as good as American players promised — maybe even better.Especially Megan Rapinoe, the pink-haired captain who emerged with the Golden Ball as top player, the Golden Boot as top scorer and a world-wide stature as a champion for gender equity. The U.S. won its record fourth Women's World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 Sunday night when Rapinoe converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the second half and Rose Lavelle added a goal.Rapinoe scored in the 61st minute after a video review determined Stefanie van der Gragt had fouled Alex Morgan with a kick to the shoulder in the penalty area. Two days past her 34th birthday, Rapinoe slotted the ball past goalkeeper Sari van Veenendaal for her sixth goal of the tournament. The oldest player to score in a Women's World Cup final, she struck a familiar victorious pose with arms outstretched."It's surreal. I don't know how to feel like now. It's ridiculous," Rapinoe said. "We're crazy and that's what makes us so special. We just have no quit in us. We're so tight, and we'll do anything to win."Lavelle, at 24 the team's up-and-coming star, added her third goal of the tournament on an 18-yard left-footed shot in the 69th after a solo run from the center circle."She's superstar, not even in the making, she's straight up superstar at this point," Rapinoe said.Fans, many dressed in red, white and blue, chanted "Equal Pay!" at the final whistle , a reminder players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March claiming gender discrimination.Rapinoe drew the ire of U.S. President Donald Trump during the tournament by saying she and teammates would refuse to visit the White House, part of the team's wider push for gender equity. New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio needed just a few seconds after the final whistle to invite the team to a ticker-tape parade up the Canyon on Heroes in Manhattan on Wednesday. The Americans never trailed in the tournament and set records with 26 goals and a 12-game World Cup winning streak dating to 2015. U.S. coach Jill Ellis became the first coach to lead a team to two Women's World Cup titles, and the U.S. joined Germany in 2003 and 2007 as the only repeat champions."It's just chemistry. They put their hearts and soul into this journey," Ellis said. "They made history."FIFA president Gianni Infantino handed over the trophy, a stark contrast to four years ago in Canada, when then-president Sepp Blatter was a no-show as U.S. prosecutors investigated corruption in soccer's governing body. While the U.S. added fourth star to its jersey, Germany is the only nation that has even two. With confidence and brashness that some called even arrogant — triggering a backlash that the angry response was sexist — this American team established a standard of excellence that exceeded the U.S. champions of 1991, 1999 and 2015, becoming a goal for all others to match. Former American players joined the current generation on the field for the postgame celebration.Alyssa Naeher, the 31-year-old who succeeded Hope Solo in goal, faced repeated questions entering the tournament but allowed just three goals in the tournament and finished with her fourth shutout. The U.S. had scored within the first 12 minutes of its previous six matches in the tournament but the European champions sat back to keep their defensive shape and kept the score 0-0 through the first half.Video review, adopted by FIFA for the men's World Cup last year, showed its impact when Stephanie Frappart, the first woman to referee a men's Ligue 1 match, went to the screen at the side of the field and then signaled toward the spot.Rapinoe, who missed Tuesday's semifinal win over England with a hamstring injury, became the first woman to score on a penalty kick during a Women's World Cup final, her 50th goal in 158 international appearances. She matched Morgan and England's Ellen White for most goals in the tournament and won the Golden Ball based on fewer minutes.Rapinoe was given a standing ovation by the crowd when she subbed out in the 79th minute. The crowd of 57,900 at Stade de Lyon for Le Grand Finale included French President Emmanuel Macron. The Americans opened the tournament with a record 13-0 rout of lowly Thailand, triggering debate over whether the celebrations after each goal were excessive. Carli Lloyd responded the next match by following a goal with a polite golf clap. The Morgan stirred it up again when she scored against England with a tea sip, pinkie outstretched.__More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/apf-Soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports 4634
