MANDALAY, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC), visited China-funded projects in Myanmar and other industrial and educational facilities amidst his on-going visit.     Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, visited the Myanmar's 3G core network, which was built by China's ZTE Corporation, one of China's leading telecom equipment producers.     After listening to reports from both sides, Li said that information and communication industry played an important role in modern society. "I am glad to see the results you have already achieved and hope you can enhance strategic cooperation in the telecom field."     He also urged ZTE and other Chinese companies in Myanmar to transfer technologies to their partners, train local technical contingent for better serving the clients and the local society.     On Friday afternoon, Li visited Hlaing Thar Yar city of industry and listened to the briefing of local officials. He also visited a plastic pipe plant and a factory of traditional Myanmar medicines.     Early on Saturday, Li flew from Yangon to Mandalay, the country's second largest city, and visited Mandalay industrial training center. The center was set up with a grant of 30 million RMB (4.39million U.S. dollar) from the Chinese government. It was designed to train local technicians for automotive production and maintenance.     Myanmar is the second-leg of Li's four-nation tour which will also take him to the Republic of Korea and Japan. BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan has called on the international community to "act together" at the upcoming London summit to get through the global financial crisis, in an article published by the British newspaper The Times on Friday.     In the article entitled "G20 must look beyond the needs of the top 20," with a subtitle "China believes the developing world should have a stronger say in how the international financial system is run," Wang urged all heads of states to be present at the G20 London summit to "act together to get through the time of hardship."     After the financial crisis broke out, China was quick to put in place a decisive plan to boost domestic demand, advance economic restructuring and improve people's well-being, which have started to produce results, said the vice premier.     However, the Chinese economy still faces severe challenges, including to meet the demanding goal of maintaining economic growth by boosting domestic demand, ensuring employment and readjusting the economic structure. China also has to cope with shrinking external demand caused by the global economic downturn and trade and investment protectionism, Wang said.     "China will continue to take forceful measures to maintain steady and fast economic growth and contribute its share to an early recovery of the world economy," Wang pledged in the article.     Since the G20 summit in Washington last year, said Wang, China has provided a lot of assistance and support through a variety of means to a number of countries and regions, and played a part in the creation of significant Asian and global economic and trade initiatives.     The Chinese leader stressed the significance of the international community to enhance coordination and cooperation to overcome the current difficulties.     "Efforts should be made to expand trade and investment cooperation to bolster economic growth, step up cooperation among small and medium-size businesses to ensure employment stability, and strengthen cooperation in energy conservation and emissions' reduction, environmental protection and development of new energy technologies to nurture growth points for the world economy," Wang suggested.     He firmly rejected trade and investment protectionism of all kind. "The international community should recognize that the trend towards economic globalization is irreversible and should take credible steps to reject all forms of trade and investment protectionism," he said.     Wang also called on the international financial system to be reformed, "with the focus on readjusting the governance structure of international financial institutions and increasing the representation and voice of developing countries." He asked the London summit to set a clear goal, timetable and road-map for such reform.     To prevent similar crisis from happening again, Wang, also a Chinese economic expert, suggested prudent regulation of all financial markets and institutions involved to be tightened and regulatory coordination and cooperation at both the regional and international levels to be increased.     On the hot topic of increasing financial resources for the International Monetary Fund (IMF), he said China supports the increase as far as the fund is safe and reasonable returns can be ensured.     "China is ready to play an active part in exploring ways to raise resources and will contribute to this effort within its ability," Wang said. He asked the IMF to mobilize resources through the "quota-based" system as well as voluntary contributions, striking a balance between the rights and obligations of the contributing countries.     As a return, said the Chinese vice premier, the IMF must enhance capacity-building, reform governance structure and ensure that the resources play a significant role in easing the international financial crisis and countering the global economic downturn. BEIJING, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- China lodged another stern representation to Japan on Friday over Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone's remarks that the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States is applicable to the Diaoyu Islands.     According to the reports by the Taiwan-based Broadcasting Corporation of China (BCC), an official of the U.S. State Department, familiar with East Asian affairs, said at a press conference in Washington on Friday that the Diaoyu Islands were always under Japan's administrative jurisdiction and the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security between Japan and United States was applicable to them.     Japanese Foreign Minister Hirofumi Nakasone echoed the U.S. official's remarks afterwards.     Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Ma Zhaoxu rejected Nakasone's remarks later in a press release, saying the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty should not harm the interests of third parties, including China.     "Any words and deeds that bring the Diaoyu Islands into the scope of the Japan-U.S. Mutual Cooperation and Security Treaty are absolutely unacceptable for the Chinese people," he said.     Ma stressed again that the Diaoyu Islands and adjacent islets had been Chinese territories since ancient times and China held "indisputable" sovereignty over the islands.     "We have lodged stern representations to Japan again and required the United States to clarify reports on the issue," he said.     He also urged the two countries to realize the great sensitivity of the Diaoyu Islands issue and proceed with discretion in word and deed, so as to avoid damage to the general interests of China-Japan and China-U.S. relations and regional stability.

BEIJING, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping has called for offices at all levels responsible for the research of the history of Communist Party of China (CPC) to play a more important role in improving the Party's ruling abilities.     Xi, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remark at a meeting attended by officials in charge of the Party history research offices at the provincial level on Wednesday.     Xi urged the Party committees to provide financial and human resource support for those offices and encouraged Party history researchers to play stronger role in education among the Party members.     The Vice President said Party history research organs should take the opportunity in the year of 2009 when the People's Republic of China celebrates the 60th anniversary of founding.     Xi stressed that the offices should promote the Party's ruling abilities and solidify the CPC's status as the governing party.

HAIKOU, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Traffic had been resumed on Sunday on the highway that had been flooded by collapse of a small reservoir on March 27, in south China's Hainan Province, local authorities said.     The Wanning section of the province's eastern expressway had been resumed in both directions at 8:00 p.m. after nine days of reconstruction work, said an official with the provincial Communication Department.     The Bofeng reservoir, with a designed water storage capacity of1.02 million cubic meters, collapsed at about 10 p.m. in Xinglong Town, Wanning City.     The ensuing floods washed out a slip road to the province's eastern expressway and swept away two cars, injuring three people in the vehicles.     The water also inundated 20 hectares of farmland and caused slight damage to three riverside houses.     The municipal water conservancy administration had claimed that only 100,000 cubic meters of water burst from the reservoir. However, Chen Xingzhang, secretary of the CPC municipal committee of Wanning, doubted its credibility.     Vehicles had to detour around the flooded road over the past days.     The reservoir was being reinforced at the time of the accident. An investigation showed that workers of a company in charge of the project exploded part of the cofferdam before the water dropped to the safety level, which led to the collapse. The scheme had no approval from authorities at the time.     The construction contractor, Hongda Water Conservancy Projects Co, Ltd., based in Henan Province, and the project supervising company, Hainan Institute of Water Conservancy and Power Construction Survey and Design, were banned from carrying out further business in the city.     Police have detained four project workers in connection with alleged safety violations that led to the collapse in the province, the local Communist Party of China (CPC) committee said Monday.     Chen Ruchuan, former head of the water conservancy administration of Wanning City, and two deputy heads, were also sacked from their posts Monday, according to the Wanning municipal committee of the CPC.     The local government has been working on a plan to compensate people affected in the accident.
