PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, tens of millions of school kids across the country suddenly found themselves going to school at home. Among them was 17-year-old Andya Sharps.“It was kind of rough, my high school year,” she said, “but I'm just excited that it's all over.”It was rough, in part, because in addition to being a high school senior during the pandemic, Andya also has a young son.“We had to learn how to do work at home, instead of being around our teachers for help. So, it was just a little hard,” she said. “Then, [my son’s] out of school on top of that. So, I had to deal with his schoolwork and my schoolwork at home.”Despite the challenges, she’s now graduating from her Philadelphia high school having been student of the month several times and with perfect attendance.“She came to us with her infant and she came with her determination and she just had a drive to finish,” said Lita Byrd, principal of Ombudsman Northwest Accelerated High School.Andya’s accomplishments left her grandmother, Adrienne Pearson, nearly speechless.“As talkative as I am, I’m kind of without words to express it,” Pearson said. “This is just magnificent that she's doing this she's doing this for herself, as well as for her son, and I am so very, very proud of her.”However, Andya had help along the way, too, thanks in part to an immersive curriculum and program for 12,000 at-risk students in U.S. public schools through ChanceLight Ombudsman Educational Services.“You've got to create that environment where, one, that the slate is wiped clean, it's a brand-new day and we're going to find out what you're really strong in,” said ChanceLight CEO Mark Claypool.For them, technology has always been a part of that, which is why they say the pandemic didn’t affect their students’ ability to learn remotely, as much as it did others.As for Andya, she’s heading to college and plans to study pediatric physical therapy.“You can do anything that you put your mind to,” she said, “no matter what.” 2030

Perry Hopsin was just 22 years old when he got into a car accident that would eventually end his life."My brother, he has been to multiple healthcare facilities, fighting for his life for 10 months," said Parris Hopsin.Last month, Perry died and just as his family was starting to cope with the fact that they would never see him again, the same car he was killed in, popped up in front of Perry High School in Stark County, Ohio.The family says it was there to promote their prom promise campaign-which tries to deter teens from drinking and driving."Our family was under the impression that the car was still being held as evidence in this ongoing investigation," said Parris.The only problem is the Hopsins family never consented to it and their loved one was not drinking and driving."It was definitely not the way Perry would want to be represented and/or our family would want him to be represented and remembered," she said.The school has now removed the car and it's back in the towing company's lot."I really appreciate that they would remove it," said Parris. PHOENIX, Arizona — Google's self-driving car is likely going to be on the road before 2018 ends.The Waymo driverless taxi service will first be on the streets of Phoenix, Arizona, and it will launch without much government oversight — it isn't required like it is for new airplanes and medical devices, for example. Bloomberg reports it will have a new name when it launches in December. People in the suburbs around Phoenix will likely be the first people to use it, which will cover about 100 square miles, Bloomberg reports.There has been a test group of 400 volunteer families riding in Waymo vehicles for more than a year. PEORIA, AZ - An Amber Alert for a 2-year-old girl abducted from Peoria Monday morning has been canceled after the girl was found safe several hours later. According to Peoria police, Khaleesi Morales was taken by her non-custodial father, 32-year-old Luis Jesus Morales, around 6 a.m. from a residence near Lake Pleasant and Beardsley roads.Luis is the defendant on an Order or Protection not to have contact with the girl or her mother. According to officials, Luis was arrested and booked into jail by Peoria police Sunday night after violating that Order of Protection, but was released at 5:14 a.m. on Monday.Police said Luis went to the child's Peoria home Monday morning, opened a window, broke the screen out, stepped on his young son's hand and assaulted the mother before taking Khaleesi. He reportedly stole the mother's vehicle and headed southbound on Lake Pleasant Road. Police say there were several box knives in the stolen vehicle. An Amber Alert was issued around 8 a.m. Monday for Khaleesi.Around 1 p.m., police said the Peoria SWAT team was able to locate the girl and Luis at a business near 99th Avenue and Beardsley Road, just a short distance from where the toddler was abducted. Khaleesi was "safe and unharmed" and was asking for her mother. Luis was taken into custody without incident.Khaleesi was reunited with her mother at the Peoria Police Department Monday afternoon. Luis is being charged with kidnapping, burglary, aggravated assault, violation of a court order and auto theft.
